I wish I had a band...

Huber 05-03-2005 01:58 PM
i wanted to play some TOoL covers, prolly like 2. I learned about 10 songs a while ago, asked them to get tab to learn it. It took the bassist 2 months before he got SOME of it down, and the drummer is a lazy bitch that comes up with excuses to not learn any tab.....so im sure thats a bit worse
I give people my number all the time, and then they call back and schedule something, and then no one comes. It's super lame. Like lame, but really super.

The JoZ 05-03-2005 02:00 PM
Yea, we practice ALOT when we get together. We are actually scheduling some 12 to 16 hour practices to work on material. If it were up to us we would lock ourselves away for 6 months and not surface until the CD was complete.
Dang, and I thought my own 3+ hour practices were long. Haha.

dude fuk that attitude. I LITERALLY started my own....which isnt too hard.......i just wish i would have tried harder to not be stuck in the position. I keep submitting new ads cause im tryin to bail on these ******s, but i want another project lined up first

SonorKen 05-03-2005 02:03 PM

Well, I love playing Tool covers at shows. It seperates bands. When other bands see you cover a complicated Tool song to the T you really turn thier heads. We have always been a band that plays for other musicians, its really cool to be surrounded by so many talented and gifted people.

kurrpt 05-03-2005 02:03 PM

i actually got a call from some old guy who said hes been playing drums for like 15 years or more. I would totally be kewl with him, but then i would need a practice space, since we practice in the current drummers barn.
I personally would jam 24 hours a day if I had the choice. However, working on putting an album together is a lot more grueling than jamming.
YEah, I hate writing new stuff with the band... But its well worth it when you're done, because then you get to play shows and everything :thumb:

I know I HATE that. People are like "Oh yeah man, I'm a pretty good singer, I can be there around 3, sure"
/4:30
Wtf? Why isnt the guy here yet?
/calls him
"Oh... uhhh... I had some stuff to do, I don't think its gonna work out"

I live in Kansas. I live in a town of about 3,000 people (mostly old people). Needless to say, there aren't many musicians around here that are seriously interested in starting a band. So yeah, it is hard.

Thankfully, I'll be going off to college in the fall. Hopefully I can get some people then.

Huber 05-03-2005 02:15 PM

My biggest drawback is a place to play. My garage is filled with pretty much a house. A pipe leaked a few years ago and flooded are house and everything ruined was put into the garage. You can't see the floor, it's bad. I need to find like a shed or something to play in.

Adam Jones is GOD 05-03-2005 02:54 PM

I have my dad working at our local school, with its 3rd in the country for greatest music centers. Which i've been told can be booked at anytime for knock down prices for having such a contact at the school.

Trouble is, needing a band to play with there. They have professional recording equipment and everything.

dam, well we have a barn thats pretty nice. Theres a sheep in the bottom that my drummer likes to fuk, but we got the entire second story for jamming. Problem is when i get rid of the drummer, obviously im gonna need a new space to practice. It would be worth it to have someone who can stay on the same page as everyone else

SonorKen 05-03-2005 03:05 PM

I have thought about building an area close to my home, 2 seperate sound proofed studios, with drum sets, guitar half stack, bass half stack. All the guys would need to bring would be thier cymbals, guitar and bass heads and some blank cassette tapes if they want to record. I would charge 20 bucks an hour and let people practice there. They could schedule whatever they want.

I also thought about setting up monthly plans, you could get so much time, scheduled in advance at a reduced rate. This would help alot of bands that don't have alot of cash have the ability to practice and still be relatively easy and cheap.

I discussed such a venture one day like that KEn, there was a disused room above a local shop for sale, and it was a serious idea for a while that we riske da venture on transforming a room to allow for bands to use as a practice space. Our town lacks anywhere at the moment for reliable, cost effective practice space, and its really affecting local musicians.

Unfortunately, we never had the guts or the buisness heads to attempt such an idea.

Heh, that sounds familiar. Back in the old days (well...last year, that is) a couple of my bandmates worked at a bar, and I also worked for a catering company in the same building, so we were able to get access to the bar after it closed. So, we'd haul all of our equipment in there on a weekly basis, usually on a friday, and we'd play from 11:00 at night until 7 or 8 the next morning.

We don't have the bar available anymore though, so our old style all-night practices are a rarity now. Usually we'll get together at my house now at around 11 in the morning and go straight through until about five or six in the evening. Still not a bad length for a practice (my cousin who has his own band always tells me we're nuts), but we all miss the all-nighter days.

With school and everything, we practice form 3-5:30 :(
But they usually are very productive.

deathmetal 05-03-2005 08:14 PM

I think that when it comes to TOOL, it doesn't matter what we think the lyrics are supposed to mean. They are the one band where their lyrics can go numerous different ways. You just gotta go by the way you feel I guess. I dunno. They're artisitic, and we all can tie many different things in with their lyrics

deathmetal 05-03-2005 08:16 PM

Hey, aint this a TOOL thread, not talking about fricken band practices and what not.

Darkness 05-03-2005 08:17 PM

The bands that are being discussed are an online tribute band, and another band that is highly influenced by Tool.

Magicaltroll 05-03-2005 08:17 PM
Hey, aint this a TOOL thread, not talking about fricken band practices and what not.
Its not so much a Tool only thread, its for Tool fans to come together and talk about music/whatever :)

Dr. Jake Destructo 05-03-2005 11:00 PM

Clearvision- Sorry about 2 pages back. :p I meant "ouch" as "good take, but it's still a mic recording." Sorry for the misconseption. It didn't deserve an ouch. (a)

Ken- I wish someone could do something like that in my town. It would be an awesome way to meet people looking for a band. I actually know a very good drummer, but he is working on his solo project(he also plays guitar, bass, vox, and his current project is somewhat of a progressive thrash type of deal, so I'm pumped up for it) and he is also in another band, so he's kind of too busy to play with me. I know a bassist, but she changed schools and became a pothead. :(

Meh, I geuss I'll stick to recording mic'd Tool covers. :p

SonorKen 05-03-2005 11:02 PM
Its not so much a Tool only thread, its for Tool fans to come together and talk about music/whatever :)
Exactly, this is a place where all us Tool fans have created a community. The last thing we need is someone coming in telling us what to do. Fit in or take a hike.

Huber 05-03-2005 11:04 PM

Tool doesn't release enough info to talk about for there to be constant Tool talk anyways. I like the Tool Community thread idea better anyways.

Dr. Jake Destructo 05-03-2005 11:11 PM

Especially since the whole Tribute thing has started, this thread has become more of a community oriented thread rather that Tool talk. I've seen more sharing of ideas and expierences than just talking about Tool. I really like it this way. :D

Huber 05-03-2005 11:16 PM

Another group of guys asked me to be there drummer today, and they offered to help clean up my garage. These could be the guys who don't flake! Hoorah!

SonorKen 05-03-2005 11:24 PM

Gratz Slip! Keep us informed man. I agree Jake, who ever would have thought they would see me and Joz actually getting along!! I wouldnt have bet that in a thousand years, he is turning out to be one of my favorite mxers!

Huber 05-03-2005 11:27 PM

That's just how cool this thread is

Dr. Jake Destructo 05-03-2005 11:28 PM

Heh. Why didn't you guys get along before?

SonorKen 05-03-2005 11:30 PM

We just clashed over some goofy stuff. Both of us are strong minded and wouldnt budge. Its all in the past as far as Im concerned. And he is right, I can be a prick at times.

Werny 05-04-2005 02:32 AM

I've had to stay out of here for a while... too much equipment talk! I was thinking about learning drums once but it's waaaay too much farking money.

Ken, I remember reading "we think people will identify with our music" or something along those lines. Just remember what Danny says (something like this, it's on his website):

"If you're playing just to get signed, do us all a favor and stop right now." "You don't want to sacrifice your art to get famous".

I'm not saying you're playing just to get signed, but it sounds like you think the combination of your virtuosic skills and experiences of your members will be good for your success. There's a pretty high chance that you won't be sellin' out records any time soon, so just don't get worked up.
