Actually I only love maple syrup from that list, which is easily better then all American products, eh?

Best thing to come out of canada = Into Eternity!

Godhead's lament = overated.
This so called "wonderful" chorus is actually quite uninspiring. Bleak's chorus rips it to shreds. I'm sure everyone would agree in some manner, some of Opeth's songs do meander. If you don't connect with a song straight away it will grow on you. And so it is for me with Godhead's lament. It sort of sits on the fence like Harlequin Forest, it can't decide whether it's heavy or soft or both. Meh.

I'm sure Opeth seemed oddly out of place at SOTU, they're a good band.

A question for anyone who's seen them on this tour, do you guys remember how long the show lasted? I can't get the car tomorrow, and I've gotta figure out stuff like train times coming back home.

Bleak is one of my favorite Opeth songs ever. Great structure, but one thing is concerning me about this post. Please never ever ever ever ever compare Godheads Lament to Reverie/Harlequin Forest on this thread again. That's like comparing a turd to a sunset.

It's his opinion, dude. I personally don't think Godheads Lament is that much better then Harlequin either, to be honest.

Congrats, you've just earned a nice neg-rep. Quit being such a troll when it comes to the subject of stuff on "Ghost Reveries." It's REALLY old by this point, and you have no right to be bossing other people around about what they can or can't do "in this thread." I'm sick of seeing this childish behavior from you: nearly every comment on the subject of GR from you is totally unneccesary and often downright inflammatory and mean-spirited, and you have long since ceased backing it up reasonably and amicably. Your problems and opinions on the matter have been duly noted. Now shut the hell up. You should know better.
Its a decent song (though widly overrated, IMO), but I'm mainly bugging Deth. :D
You're starting to bug me, too. :upset: Some of us happen to like that track very much, and your constant badgering of it is getting almost as old as Ghost Reveries bashing or Roadrunner whining.

It's all good, though. ;)

Dude, maybe I'm out of place here but:
1.) Still Life owns all; my favorite Opeth album as a whole
2.) Godhead's Lament is pretty much my favorite Opeth song
3.) Closure is the best song on Damnation
4.) Harlequin Forest is Opeth's worst song (though it's still decent, as it's Opeth)
5.) Bleak is okay, but it's not as good as: The Lepper Affinity, The Drapery Falls, Dirge for November, The Funeral Portrait (which is INCREDIBLY underrated)
6.) Dirge for November is one of my favorite tracks on BWP; currently my favorite to listen to. I don't see why people don't like this one; it's pure emotion.
7. By the Pain I See in Others is my second favorite track on Deliverance, second only to the song Deliverance. And, I'm sorry guys, but By the Pain I See in Others ends on a held chord. All the backwards singing and weird crap at the end is NOT part of that song!!!

This is, of course, all my own personal oppinion. I'll end my rant now. But does ANYONE else here agree with me?

elbassio 10-28-2005 05:59 AM

Anyone on here going to see Opeth and Burst in a month or so? Ive seen Opeth once this year already, but now I get to see Burst aswell.AND Opeth. AGAIN!!!
I want more songs of Still Life and Black Water Park this time though. And if wishes were wings, pigs would fly.

Iron Man 10-28-2005 07:47 AM

Just saw Opeth+Nevermore last night. I had never heard Nevermore before last night, and although they put on a good show (might check out their studio stuff now) Opeth was of course my favorite part of the night.

Setlist

Baying of the Hounds
When
Bleak
In My Time of Need
The Grand Conjuration
Face of Melinda
Deliverance
Blackwater Park
Demon of the Fall

I was satisfied. Woke up today with a very sore neck and almost no voice, but it was worth it.

Awesome, I'm going to see them in....11 hours!!!! :D :D :D
/does a happy dance

hehe...sore neck + no voice = me tomorrow!

By the way, what time did your show end Iron Man?

/NP When - It's been a while since I listened to MAYH, and I forgot When. I've gotten used to Opeth's abrupt switching from softer to heavier passages, but the way this goes from the mellow intro to a total ****ing assault completely caught me off guard.

Oooooh can't wait until/if they come to Australia. The Baying of the Hounds sounds like it'd go off live, and that psycho fast part (that only goes for like 10 seconds, grrr) in The Grand Conjuration.

What would be awesome, is Reverie played like halfway through, or after a particularly heavy song.

I actually found it quite humorous.

A turd to a sunset!

I've listened to Godhead's lament right through again, it does have some nice moments...... the riffing at 5.50 - 6.50

I also like the solo from 2.55 - 3.24 where the guitar actually sounds like it's singing 'searching my way to perplexion'

The Brad 10-28-2005 03:36 PM

Hey I was just curious if any of you are familiar with Toni Morrison's Beloved it was released in 1987, she got a Nobel Prize for it in '93 and Oprah made it into a horrible movie in '98?
Anyway around the time Ghost Reveries was released we had started reading it in my creative writing class, I can see a lot of parallels between the lyrical content and the novel. Some of it may be a stretch, but I think it could make for some interesting discussion. If we discussed the similarities in the plots.
Dude, maybe I'm out of place here but:
1.) Still Life owns all; my favorite Opeth album as a whole
Agreed; mine too.
2.) Godhead's Lament is pretty much my favorite Opeth song
Mine as well.
3.) Closure is the best song on Damnation
Agreed.
4.) Harlequin Forest is Opeth's worst song (though it's still decent, as it's Opeth)
I disagree...I happen to like the song, and it's certainly better than "Into The Frost Of Winter." :p
5.) Bleak is okay, but it's not as good as: The Lepper Affinity,
I like both alot, but I'd probably lean more towards Bleak.
The Drapery Falls,
I'd say that they're about equal, and Drapery Falls gets a hell of alot more attention than Bleak does.
Dirge for November,
The intro is one of Opeth's best moments, but the rest of the song doesn't do too much for me.
The Funeral Portrait (which is INCREDIBLY underrated)
Agreed! That and Harvest were my two favorites off of BWP when I first got it. What I like about Funeral Portrait is that it is so atypical of what Opeth normally does...there's no extended acoustic guitar interludes, and only a small bit of clean singing at the end (I suppose you could say the same about Leper Affinity). The intro produces very vivid imagery for me, though...I often will see colors when I listen to music, but that song in particular is very clear: oranges, reds, blacks, and whites, like a raging fire in the dead of winter. Any song that can evoke that powerful of an image in me is ok in my book. ;)
6.) Dirge for November is one of my favorite tracks on BWP; currently my favorite to listen to. I don't see why people don't like this one; it's pure emotion.
Well, like I said, it's not my favorite, but I do like it.
7. By the Pain I See in Others is my second favorite track on Deliverance, second only to the song Deliverance. And, I'm sorry guys, but By the Pain I See in Others ends on a held chord. All the backwards singing and weird crap at the end is NOT part of that song!!!
To be honest, it's been a really long time since I've listened to Deliverance, so I can't really comment. :upset:

Talking about The Funeral Portrait, I love the "And you are just like them all, stained by the names of fathers" verse. One of my favorite clean verses by Opeth.
