Live At The Budokan

or

Live In Tokyo / 5 Years In A LIVETime?

Which DVD shall I buy?

Apocalyptic Raids 03-25-2006 07:45 AM

Depends how much you like Train Of Thought.

Budokan definetely. The quality is great, sound is awesome, and the camera work is amazing. The material ain't bad either. And the second disc has a very cool DT documentary.

I own the CD for Budokan and the Live IN Tokyo/5 Years in a LiveTime DVD, so I can't give you first hand comparisons for camera work or quality. But I have scene several parts of Budokan online, and I can safely say its a superbly produced DVD. On the other hand, Tokyo/5 Years has tons of rare stuff you wouldn't hear them play any more.

The first disk is a bit poorly put together, with clips of the band on tour intercutting the actual concert footage (although some of these clips are actually quite funny.) The performance itself is amazing, even if LaBrie screws up a bit. There's superb performances of Surrounded, Wait For Sleep, To Live Forever, A Fortune in Lies, and Take the Time. And most amazing of all, Myung crosses over to stage left.

The second disk also has some really great stuff, with great performances from their "unplugged" fanclub show in '98, their Awake World Tour in '94, their "uncovered" fan club show in '95 (where the covers on A Change of Seasons came from - the singer from Napalm Death, Steve Hogarth and Steve Rothary of Marillion, and Steve Howe guest on it) and the show were Once in a LiveTime was recorded (the version of Peruvian Skies is awsome.)

Sorry about the long winded post...

Lord Abortion 03-25-2006 12:03 PM

I prefer Budokan, TBH, The first disk of 5YIAL is excellent. I <3 surrounded, but the second...the material isn't brilliant, to be honest, and for FII tracks, the best ones are on LATB anyway (sadly excluding take away my pain)

ghettoeddo 03-25-2006 01:03 PM

budokan is much better produced. by far. if that's any indicator of how this latest one is gonna be... :]

did anyone else notice the ORCHESTRA PIT at the radio city music hall in NY? and seeing as how they used an orchestra for sacrificed sons and 8vm...eh? eh?

any thoughts on DT using an orchestra? reminds me of metallica's S&M, which actually wasn't too bad

edit: oh snap, jk. looks like the seating plan doesn't have an actual pit?
damn.

National chaos sam 03-25-2006 01:23 PM

I dunno, i liked five years in a livetime, the audio commentary was very in depth, and some of the events are pretty memorable, like the show with Steve Howe and Marillion. allthough its a bit mismatched...

Yeah, I listened to some of the commentary and it was really interesting. The version of Easter on their sounds amazing.

At the moment my Cd drive's a bit screwed and it doesn't really rip anything. But if no one else does, I'll give it a try.

Lord Abortion 03-26-2006 12:08 PM

I need to get a new copy of FII...I have the box...

GenuineImitation 03-26-2006 12:14 PM

I dont want to appear like an annoying asswipe, but can some one please help me (see a few posts above). FII and When Dream and Day Unite are the only 2 DT cds that I barely listened to. I want to be more familiar with the songs on these cds for the April 1st show. This way I can inform you what songs are going to be on the DVD if they play anything from those 2 albums. Its a win-win situation.

Lord Abortion 03-26-2006 01:26 PM

Possibly Hollow years or take away my pain?

/Prays.

check the tour history on the site, they have every setlist from the octavarium tour on there

Download these tracks:

"A Fortune In Lies"
"Another Won"
"Raise the Knife"
"Peruvian Skies"

I think those are the only WD&DU and FII songs they've been playing on this tour.

ghettoeddo 03-26-2006 11:46 PM

they'll probably play songs that haven't appeared much on DVD's so far.

i doubt hollow years will be on there, as it was on budokan. the only other one i can tihink of mihgt be peruvian skies (on 5YIALT) and just let me breathe. also on 5YIALT i believe. so we'll see...

genuine, i'll send a few songs when i get time. i need to sleep tonight, i was at relay 4 life all night...

Erotomania 03-27-2006 12:18 AM

National chaos sam 03-27-2006 04:26 AM

They opened for Iron Maiden last year and some guy at a T shirt stool noticed my DT images and Words T shirt, and said: "oh, that awful band who opened for maiden" I was outraged.

kurrpt 03-27-2006 09:09 AM

Cool, thats where I'm going. I can't wait...

Man, DT and Maiden together would be amazing. In the late nineties they did a tour with Deep Purple and ELP which also sounds pretty mind blowing.
