I'm not saying YOU'RE dumb, Nick, just changing it was dumb. It makes no difference. ;)
<3s 4 Nick -Gav |
It's changed for the better.
|
Putting both is kind of redundant anyway, regardless of your opinion on whether screamo is a genre.
It'd be like calling the Community Thread in punk the Punk/Hardcore Community Thread before this forum was created. |
You say "simply because music is a new form of an existing genre...", my point is that screamo is NOT a NEW form of anything. Its just a few bands who took a chaotic approach, my point being that they don't justify a new genre. So because Emo is a new approach/style it justifies being a new genre. Screamo on the other hand is not a revolutionary approach to emo.
So.. then why did Hardcore get a new name? Isn't Hardcore to Punk as Screamo is to Emo? |
No it's not. Modern hardcore bands haven't done anything incredibly different from bands previously in the scene. They haven't taken any sort of drastically new approach to it musically or ethically. Its more of just a continuation, just as Emo today is a continuation of emo then. No new approach has been taken, its the same stuff it just sounds different, cause its an innovative genre, there's room for change musically. Just as hardcore wasn't renamed, emo shouldn't be renamed either. Punk and Hardcore were a bit synonymous back then too. I believe it was Ian Mackeye who said "we are hardcore punks"... or something like that semi-seriously. I hope that answers your question a little better.

I'd say screamo is to emo as jazz fusion is to jazz. It's the same thing, only slightly different but jazz is a very open genre. It's all jazz but you can call something jazz fusion to be a bit more specific.
That's my opinion, anyway. Like I said, it's all emo to me. -Gav |
Yeah that's a good comparison. I would only use screamo to desribe those more chaotic grind/powerviolence driven bands who are also emotionally focused and in the same scene.
|
Ok.
Cool. Thats all. Bands such as In/Humanity? What other bands would you recommend that are like them? Combatwoundedveteran? |
I'd call stuff like Off Minor and pg. 99 screamo myself...
-Gav |
I would disagree with Gav on Off Minor, they are just a sweet emo band with jazz riffs.
But In/Humanity and Combatwoundedveteran could be considered "screamo" if you enjoy using that to classify them. Some might call them grind or powerviolence though. In/Humanity kind of border the line between "screamo" and powerviolence/grind, but yeah. Orchid is probably the most notable band. You've got the right idea. |
Off Minor? Gav, c'mon. You know better.
|
Ok.
Cool. Thats all. Bands such as In/Humanity? What other bands would you recommend that are like them? Combatwoundedveteran?
I guess. |
yeah I don't know too much about grind/powerviolence, so you could clarify that stuff with Retired.
|
Bleh...I'd consider them screamo but whatever.
I'd go with emo with jazz riffs. :thumb: Speaking of violence, what the hell is "emo violence?" Is that even a real genre? Same with emocore...I mean...what the fuck? -Gav |
It's mocking power violence. Started by In/Humanity. Basically, "screamo" with a funny name.
|
Emo violence is a joke term coined by In/Humanity and basically refers to the same bands "screamo" refers to. It's not a real genre, its a joke term, but some idiots take it seriously. Emocore is just redundant idiocy. "Emotional emotional hardcore". It's just another made up term.

Awesome...thanks guys. :thumb:
I'm off. I leave for Florida until Wednesday tomorrow morning...so...see all you guys later. -Gav |
Later Gav. Have fun dude.
|
I'm going to Florida in 2-3 weeks. Sup sup? Let me know if I should check anything out, Gav.
|
I like Emo Violence more than screamo. I can't see the emotionality in Combatwoundvetern, they just sound like a straight pv/grind to me. But I'm not very good with that genre, not a huge fan of it. Like some bands, hate a lot of the bands.
|
While we are on the subject of grind, what do people class An Albatross as?
|

I agree. That, and they're lame. |
While we are on the subject of grind, what do people class An Albatross as?
Not grind, they're s'hit. |
Speaking of grind: Me, the kid that used to be on guitar and is now on bass that has little knowledge about music, and my drummer basically accidentally started a grind band without my singer whos a wimp and doesnt want to scream or even sing. Its awesome. We already made 2 songs, and the one begins and sounds like a western movie or something. Pretty much, no writing takes place out of practice, because at practice we just play crazy stuff and say 'oh that sounds cool and/or br00tal, lets put it in a song'. Its awesome.
|
Not grind, they're s'hit.
Well '1) Sex 2) Bird 3) Cake' is a grind album. Its the later stuff thats harder to define. |
That's what me and my friend do all the time in my basement. We've come up with some pretty cool stuff.
EDIT: To Cobert. |
That's what me and my friend do all the time in my basement. We've come up with some pretty cool stuff.
EDIT: To Cobert.
Yeah, its awesome. But if i write anything outside of a practice, its goes to my main band, which we might actually get rid of our singer and just make me sing anyways. So basically, same band, 2 different sounds. I'd prefer to keep them seperated because one is all improvised stuff either live or just at practice, and the other is a lot more intricate and melodic. |
What's the other band?
|
While we are on the subject of grind, what do people class An Albatross as?
I would say Noise. Anyways, I love em'. |
I would say Noise. Anyways, I love em'.
Why? |
Why do I love em' or why do I think they're Noise?
|
I'm guessing both.
|
What's the other band?
Post-hardcore, pretty much. As i started to move more towards emo, my singer started to say everything sucked, even though i really dont see why he has any say in anything like that, since he doesnt do anything. I've been writing more things that are really weird and almost mellow (which i have trouble with now since the bassist kid isnt very good. Give him points for trying.) Then, in a lot of stuff for this band, it gets spazzy and screamy or has a huge buildup. |
