Haha. Rule number 1 of Power metal: Be more epic.

Steerpike 04-28-2009 08:59 AM

Remember that playing fast is epic. No sound should be alone, everything should be harmonized. More solos is more epic. Write about international relations between magical kingdoms, by which I mean war. Entire albums may be recorded in the same key.

Dragonforce are very good at this.

Danger Zone 04-28-2009 09:06 AM

The best one was, Sing in English, even though your fan-base will be comprised entirely of Brazilians, Germans, Japanese, Swedes, and Finns and It's not a tour, it's a crusade!

Steerpike 04-28-2009 10:47 AM

My favorite was, "Singers are not allowed to have balls. Unless they are Hansi, because he is God."

Shattered_Future 05-03-2009 12:24 PM

Saw Nightwish last night.

They played a bunch of stuff that I love but nobody else seems to enjoy (Higher Than Hope, Romanticide), and they also played Dead To The World, which was awesome, but they cut almost all of the awesome tunes out. They had this guest player who played that thing on Last Of The Wilds (really don't like that tune) and some other stuff, but at the same time there was no Everdream, no Slaying The Dreamer, nothing from Wishmaster...I was kinda disappointed.

I'm glad I went, but it just seems like the band has lost its appeal on me.

Wolf is good.

ArcLite 05-03-2009 07:20 PM

Yeah, I just discovered Wolf not too long ago. I enjoy. Gonna have to check out a few of those other ones.

So Autumnal is good? I loved Tarot. If they keep that up I'm sold :)

I really like Last Of The Wilds. And I really want to see them play live some time.
If the setlist in any way at all resembles the one in The End Of An Era, I'm satisfied. ^^

BludgeonySteve 05-13-2009 09:27 AM

Last Of The Wilds live is sick. I've done the mature thing and got over the fact that they're not going to be playing Wishmaster era stuff anymore. It's a new band and I like the new band. Whether or not I like them more than the old Nightwish is still unclear.

They are also very good at making stunning live performances - they never play their songs like they are in the albums, it's a whole new experience.
It's really ironic reading the first couple pages of this thread from five years ago and seeing how much everyone loves Children of Bodom and Dragonforce. I'd like to see someone try to do that now.
I still like (the old) Bodom and I've always hated Dragonforce from the start.

rasputin 05-21-2009 06:01 AM

pate 05-21-2009 06:03 AM

How about leaving COB and DragonFarce out of this thread. kthx

ArcLite 05-22-2009 05:01 PM

Clearly, Lee, you must be a democrat. You use your position of power and administration to invoke law based on your personal opinion and emotion alone.

Those who govern using fact, rational, and basis of public desire would find that both COB and Dragonforce are perfectly reasonable topics of discussion in this thread, as both are indeed power metal.

(pst...this post is only half serious. Just giving you some shit.)

BludgeonySteve 05-22-2009 08:23 PM

Dragonforce were all right for a little while, now their music has become trite to me and many others. Their popularity amongst guitar hero playing 15 year olds is also a source for hostility. They're best not discussed when we could discuss something like the upcoming Blind Guardian album.

Blind Guardian just keeps getting more and more interesting. Throughout their career I think that they have become more powerful, impressive, enticing, and EPIC with every album. When A Night At The Opera was released it seemed like BG had reached the pinnacle of epicness. The band seemed to think so too because their next album, A Twist in The Myth was not as over-the-top epic and blatantly face-melting as their previous two, but instead deeper, more artistic, unique and creative. Now I'm anxious to see how they're going to balance the two worlds this time, because although still very much the Blind ****ing Guardian we know and love, they're a band that is always changing and evolving. No longer moving upward, but upward, sideways, and probably to other planes and dimensions with magical artifacts and spells. That's my take on it :)

botb 05-22-2009 08:27 PM

they can't play their **** live at allll. like its really bad.

Shattered_Future 05-22-2009 08:40 PM

Nah, they sounded fine when I saw them.

But I do remember being really mad after the show because the levels were so ****ing bad and the crowd was unbelievably rowdy and loud.

Also, I'd like to see them release some new material. It's been what, three, four years since A Twist In The Myth? Get with the ****in' program dudes.

Stormrider 05-22-2009 08:49 PM

Actually, you should. You out of all people should be well aware that BG release an album every like 4 years :p hahah

RNR: Have you heard that new song they did for the video game? The name escapes me at the moment, but I liked it. I'm really looking foward to a new album, too.

BludgeonySteve 05-22-2009 08:53 PM

Yeah it rips! Now give me 10 more like it and I'm appeased for another 4 years.

edit for all who haven't heard it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fakNlghOJY

I haven't listened to Blind Guardian in a year or so. Maybe a new album will spark my interest again.

Same here. Not a fan of BG, but I might actually go out and purchase their upcoming album - I'm hopeful that they might release some good stuff.

Stormrider 05-22-2009 11:18 PM

So you don't really like any of their past releases?
I haven't listened to Blind Guardian in a year or so. Maybe a new album will spark my interest again.
I go months without listening to Blind Guardian sometimes, and then when I do, I could listen to nothing but them for like 3 weeks.

VTK 05-22-2009 11:22 PM
So you don't really like any of their past releases?
Not necessarily, but I'd reckon I just haven't heard them enough to judge myself as a fan, a hater or indifferent - I don't own any of their albums and I've only heard a few of their songs sporadically.

Stormrider 05-22-2009 11:36 PM

Ah. You really need to get some of their albums then!

Morumbar 05-23-2009 03:08 AM

If I could recommend any individual song ---> And Then There Was Silence.

If there's any song that would convince you to check out more of their music, it's gotta be that one.

BludgeonySteve 05-23-2009 01:04 PM

There are probably 20, but yeah, that's the longest and possibly the most epic in my opinion. But you really can't go wrong with any song from their last 4 albums.

Stormrider 06-24-2009 08:20 AM

So, I'm lisening to Virgin Steele's Marriage of Heaven and Hell part one and this is pretty ****ing good, actually.

I'm liking it a lot.

Bleekill 06-24-2009 12:28 PM

I'm not sure if Grand Magus has been mentioned, they remind of BG a bit but they have a little stoner rock influence too.

Not even close to power metal.

Bleekill 06-24-2009 01:22 PM

I never claimed them to be pure power metal. They are definitely more stoner rock/metal, but the have similarities to BG, which was being discussed.

BludgeonySteve 07-21-2009 02:17 PM

The new Dark Moor is really good. I knew judging by Tarot that they were onto something new and exciting and it just needed a little more refining. It sounds like the unholy-centurychild of Rhapsody and Nightwish.

God that play on song names was mighty. *patself*

Tyler 08-17-2009 11:32 AM
