Thanks man, I appreciatte it. I really think this band has the potential to go somewhere. I think we are writing about topics that intrest alot of people. Our biggest problem, believe it or not, is were all too heavily influenced by Tool. EVERYTHING we create sounds like Tool. Were bringing in some other musicians to jam with us that have other influences so we can get away from this.
I liked your last sentence. That's awesome that you guys sound a lot like Tool, but to be a real success you'll need to create your own sound. I don't know how famous you guys are now, but from what I heard, you guys could hit it big time.

Huber 05-01-2005 02:12 PM

Ken definetly inspired me to call a few people. I need more people to jam with that aren't flakes. I'd love to be able to play Tool tunes with other people and stuff
Are there any other CD's from other bands that sound like Opiate? Also what Genre would you classify it as.
refl at my attempt to record

About 15 minutes ago, I tried recording the guitar part for Part of Me. Man...it turned out baaad. My playing was spot on for the most part, but my sound quality really bites. I recorded it too loud, so there was tons of feed back on the recording.(Not from my amp) Overall, it sucked.

I'd upload it for a good laugh, but I'd rather save my pride.

Anyways, I wanted to ask for some help on getting better quality. I use Goldwave to record, and there are plenty of editing effects, but should I be looking for a better program? If so, then what program should I get? If it's not Goldwave, then how can I make my mic work better? It usually doesn't suck, but previously I've only recorded with my acoustic or clean tones, no gain.

Help!

Darkness 05-01-2005 09:57 PM

Uh... Don't play so loud? I use Audacity but I sometimes get static if I play to loudly so I just turn down the volume of the mic.

Dr. Jake Destructo 05-01-2005 10:23 PM

 Sorry, I didn't clarify. The volume wasn't the only problem. It was the main problem. I played with my amp on a quieter setting, but it was still a very low quality when I played back what I had recorded.

Should I place my mic in a different spot? Right now, I have it directly on the speaker.

Kage 05-01-2005 11:01 PM

I would move the mic aroudn and experiment with that...but basically a PC Mic + Goldwave =\= good quality. Trust me, I used that for years.

Dr. Jake Destructo 05-01-2005 11:04 PM

I know. :-/ So then what?

I am willing to change the Goldwave part, but I'm gonna be keeping my PC mic for a while. I don't have money to purchase a higher quality mic at the moment. :-/

Magicaltroll 05-01-2005 11:11 PM
I removed the link because I wasnt very happy with the recording quality. The music is dead on, the recording is horrible. Im moving all of my mics and stuff to my home studio to work on the drum tracks for the MX cover band. Crutch will be meeting again this week and well record the stuff with actual mics and mix it down with effects.

Stagefright is my cover band, we play everything from Santana to Tool to BB King, NickleBack, 3 Door Down, The Eagles, to Garth Brooks and Mo-town R&B. I love playing with these guys as they are phenominal musicians and expose me to alot of different varietys of music.

Crutch was born out of my musical evolution. I came to a point in my life where I had so much music that I have been working on and ideas and thoughts that I need to get out. This is the first time in my career that I felt like I have a valid point to create this and decided to go for it. I auditioned a ton of people and found the best of the best. We are really spread out because of this, one of the guys travels 2 hours one way for practice. Were all in this for the same reason, the music. Were not doing this for the money at all. Crutch is a refreshing band for me, I can take my aggressions or put my emotions into my playing and the guys are so in tune with each other than they can pick up on whatever I am doing and put thier own influence on it. I do the same for them.
Crutch had ALOT of tragedy happen when we first came together, which is how we derived at the name. We formed up, solidified the line up, and began to kinda feel each other out, spend time together, jam, and discuss the writing process. We built the studio together and began to come together as friends and became parts of each others families. Soon after this happened my lead singers brother, 22 years old, was killed in a car wreck. Crutch was put on hold and everyone came together in support for Seth. We were with him pretty much day and night as he went through the mess. He used us as his crutch to get through it.

About 2 weeks after Seths brother was killed we were in the process of writing and actually putting our first song together. Seth was still a mess and we were all taking care of him when I get the most horrible phone call EVER. Maynard, my guitar player, called to tell me that his dad had just shot himself in the head and was being transported to a hospital close to my house. Again, we all pulled together for him, Seth included, and supported him in any way we could. 3 long grueling days later Maynards father died. In the weeks that followed Maynard fell back on us to try to make sense of the situation. We spent countless hours conversing and debating all of the happenings. Once again, this un-named project, became a crutch for another member. He threw himself into the music and expressed his feelings.

The time came for a name and it was a pretty easy decision, Crutch. We feel that everyone at some time in thier life needs a crutch and the music we are writing will hopefully provoke thought or fill a hole that someone needs.

Just thought I would give ya some back ground on it, sorry to ramble on!
Man, that sucks.
But you guys sound like you would be really good. It'd be awesome if you posted some songs :D I know you probably won't though...

SonorKen 05-01-2005 11:12 PM

Sup Tool heads. Thought Id update people on the drum tracks. I am working on some electronic drum sounds for the middle part of the song, I think the first major break. Im basically having to create them. Im still trying to isolate the actual electronic drum tones but the music is layered so much I can't really get it.

HOPEFULLY, I'll have the tracks ready wednesday.

Umm... if you're willing to fork over slightly over $100, you could get Cakewalk Home Studio, which is supposed to be a good program.

Then again, you could always spend $500 for a Mac Mini, use your current keyboard + mouse (that is, if they are USB), and you could keep your Windows computer and just have the Mac for recording purposes. Because Garageband pwns. It's so easy to use, and the quality is fantastic. You can get near professional quality if you know how to tweak the sounds and are willing to spend time on it. But even if you don't, you get great quality by just plugging and playing. It's really easy.

Then there's a Pod XT, but I don't really know anything about that.

SonorKen 05-01-2005 11:15 PM

Well, I plan to post some of Crutch's actual originals up. Were in the process of starting over. All the work we have done to date is being erased because we don't like the direction we were going in. So, were back at step 1 in the infancy stage!

Dr. Jake Destructo 05-01-2005 11:17 PM

My friend has a POD, and I don't really like the idea of em. If I had 100 bucks, I'd buy a better mic. If I had 500 bucks I'd buy a new guitar and a better mic.

However, is Garageband not compatible with windows, or why do you need the mac mini?

Garageband is for Macs only. Trust me, Garageband is so good, it's unreal. It's so freaking easy to use and you can get great quality recordings with it really easily. Like I said, even if you don't experiment at all, you can plug in, use their pre-set effects, pop drums and MIDI bass on, and it will still sound great.

Dr. Jake Destructo 05-01-2005 11:21 PM

Why the hell would anyone make a Mac only program? wtf?

How does it work though? Go on, please. :)

Well, it's pretty basic, I suppose. You can get a ton of tracks on there. You create a track, use a line-in for your guitar. You can create your own effects/distortions or use theirs (which sound pretty good) and record. They have a ton of drum loops you can use, or you can record your own with MIDI or maybe even real drums, but that requires an expensive mic setup to not sound like crap. Bass can be done line-in or MIDI.

You know, you could probably get Cakewalk illegally if you really tried. I got ProTools illegally, but that's only Mac.

*Disclaimer* I don't use a Mac, my friend uses Macs it and that's where I record, although sometimes he brings his computer over to my house and we record here.

Dr. Jake Destructo 05-01-2005 11:30 PM

Jom didn't mind when I asked for Fruity Loops in the YSI request thread. I bet it's a hugearse file though..:-/

What do any of you guys know about Cool Edit Pro? I hear it's fairly ok..

clearvision 05-02-2005 05:47 AM

Cool edit does the job fine, I have an example of something i recorded yesterday, to give you an example of the quality. I use line in straight from my FX pedal, this emans no background noise, I get what i would get out of headphones if i was plugged into the FX pedal...

Computer mic's are pretty sh!te, you can kinda get a good sound off them if you turn the amp down low and have the mic about 10cm away from the amp. Only problem with micing is you hear all you'r pick scrapes int he background.... So line in >>>>>>>>>mic

My version of fruityloops was only like 40 meg

Spiritofmosa 05-02-2005 06:10 AM

are apc songs written by mynard?

Adam Jones is GOD 05-02-2005 06:12 AM

Lyrics yes, music no.

Even some of the lyrics are Billys though.

Meh me just jamming aenima to show you the quality i get out of recording, my tone is too scratchy :(

Adam Jones is GOD 05-02-2005 06:16 AM

Well thats what you get for being a line in whore :p

Ill put it with JoZ's bass for you, if I can.

EDIT: On second thoughts ill leave it as a demonstration. And straight away i notice that you play it different from me, but still closer to the original. Good job.

clearvision 05-02-2005 06:21 AM

Heh cheers, I actually have no clue how the bit is played from the intro to the chorus, So i just bodge it, I didn't put it with Joz's track 'cause i was only jamming it quickly, my proper version will be tighter, and i have to sort my d@mn tone out...

Adam Jones is GOD 05-02-2005 06:22 AM

Ill go searching for some of my earlier recordings (probably a year old now) from when I had a crappy mic. Then you'll get an example of crappy tone.

clearvision 05-02-2005 06:30 AM

Bad recording eh? + bad playing...

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/6/clearvisionmusic.htm

i'd advise you against the MoP solo, that is just pain, the cover of in bloom is amusing though.

Looking back at that makes me feel like i can actually play now lol. That was done about a year ago, the original is ok at the bottom, mebbe just a little too cliché, and the mixing isn't too good.

Heh i have forgotten the password to that account.

kurrpt 05-02-2005 06:35 AM

so did anyone do the guitar part for part of me yet, besides destructo

SonorKen 05-02-2005 07:17 AM

GROAN, worked my 24 hour shift at work yesterday and am wore out, planned on sleepin alot and didnt get to. I think Im gonna sleep THEN work on Stinkfist. Problem is I hear those Sonors in my studio screaming at me, sayin stuff like "Get up puss! Get your *** down here, we have crap to do!". WHAT TO DO!!

Adam Jones is GOD 05-02-2005 07:21 AM
so did anyone do the guitar part for part of me yet, besides destructo
You want a bad quality and sloppy playing of Part of Me?

Travesty To Tool

I miss notes, I hit wrng chords, and when I recorded it, i saved it at a stupidly high level. So I tried editing to decrease its size, and its still 13Mb.

My crap > clearvisions recording (for poor quality that is).

ANd Ken, 'listen to the drums....the drums are goood.....the drums know all....'

(would be scary if they started doing rolls and polyrythms to get your attention)

kurrpt 05-02-2005 07:24 AM

sorry, i totally forgot that i needed to record the guitar of me playing that hahaa. I recently got introduced to liquid tension experiment and im hung up on paradigm shift and minds something or other.

I was playing along with The patient and YTSE jam and practice licks outta "speed mechanics for lead guitar", a new book i just snatched up. I have to print some sheet music at work for some dude that wants to learn guitar, so that should give me an excuse to go home and play. Im not sure where im gonna upload them since my home connection is 56k at best. Maybe ill put it on my IPOD and upload here at work

clearvision 05-02-2005 07:49 AM

Yours is better than mine  meh it's all in the past now :)
