the moment I stopped taking it so seriously as an artform is where it started to reveal itself as actually being worth something tbh

GottaPost 06-12-2011 05:39 PM

i cant say ive listened to enough metal to have formed an opinion on it but what i have listened to was what i would describe as sterile

i love mastodon's blood mountain but thats all i can name off the top of my head

most of the music i really love has a strong variance in dynamics and i find a lot of metal to lack this but like haz just mentioned i know that there has got to be a reason people love metal, i simply havent been compelled to find it yet

P13 06-12-2011 05:40 PM

I don't think I'll ever be able to do that because I used to like metal and then realized that I can't take it seriously as art and that's why I don't like it

@nate
yeah I agree
that's why I like motw and kayo dot, they aren't really even metal but they ahve some elements of it in it

Deth 06-12-2011 05:41 PM

I view most metal the way I would an action or horror movie

there to entertain me and not to serve some higher aesthetic purpose, though there is a good amount which can do both

saying you fail to see the appeal in metal is acting as if Terminator 2 is an inferior movie because it's primary concern was being an awesome action movie

Haz 06-12-2011 05:42 PM

the stuff I find most boring is the bands that don't have a shred of humour or irony in what they do

but in turn they can take themselves far too seriously to the point it's funny

in any case metal rules

P13 06-12-2011 05:42 PM

I don't hold music and film to be comparable though, there was a story in T2 and other action movies and there are artistic elements that you can appreciate/add to the enjoyment.

can I get some recs for any kind of metal that you guys think I'd like or stuff that I should like?

2muchket! 06-12-2011 05:43 PM

I'm not massively into metal really as much as I once was.

Deftones are still one of the bands that I love though, them protest the hero, mastodon and the damned things.

that is laughably pretentious and explains most of your faults

I'm not saying that it isn't totally based on preference
I mean it is totally based on preference

I can't change how I see metal now, I do like the more extreme ends of metal and when people do some weird fucking shit with it but not just like the base metal, i can't get into it

@haz
lol fuck off

Haz 06-12-2011 05:50 PM

St. Anger is hilarious. seriously though

go with the norwegian black metal bands and their more popular albums

Angmar 06-12-2011 05:50 PM

don't know why I haven't honestly

2muchket! 06-12-2011 06:00 PM

Diamond Eyes and Saturday Night Wrist are becoming two of my favourite albums ever.

Haz 06-12-2011 06:01 PM

deftones might have been good when I was 17

can't enjoy their stuff though idk why. i've heard White Pony and Saturday Night Wrist, it's like metal for slightly less popular kids who are still popular

P13 06-12-2011 07:17 PM

downloading Preacher, Swamp Thing and Sandman

Deth 06-12-2011 07:18 PM

can't read comics on my computer at all

first trade of swamp thing was amazing but never got any other, sandman is obviously legendary

Haz 06-12-2011 07:20 PM

reading comics on my PSP is surprisingly enjoyable

P13 06-12-2011 07:20 PM

I think I'm gonna dump them on my mom's ipad and read them on there

Deth 06-12-2011 07:23 PM

that would probably be better with the touchscreen and all

still not a medium I ever want to divulge in digitally though really

P13 06-12-2011 07:24 PM

well considering all of these together would probably cost upwards of 300 bucks I'd rather suffer

Deth 06-12-2011 07:25 PM

paying for art is for philistines

Bitchfork 06-12-2011 07:34 PM
