I love all of Awake, even the tracks that most people don't. I love Lifting Shadows off a Dream and 6:00 (besides the annoying "6:00 on a Christmas morning" sample) but most people don't seem to like those. Space Dye Vest, Scarred, Erotomania, and Voices are my absolute favs, though.

JamJar 03-20-2006 02:33 PM

I'm finding it hard to get into Awake as well, but The Silent Man, Voices, Erotomania and Space Dye Vest asre amazing.

Erotomania 03-20-2006 11:26 PM

what is 6:00 about... it has like a spider man quote in the begining:confused:

Captain Quentin 03-20-2006 11:38 PM

ok thanks i'll give them all a listen

Urgh... the sample refers to a Mary Jane, but i thinking you're drawing at straws.

ghettoeddo 03-21-2006 12:45 AM

mary jane ... marijuana?

i love innocence faded, erotomania, VOICES, the silent man, the mirror, lie, lifting shadows, scarred, SDV...ok so the whole album pretty much.

scarred has a great solo adn the opening reminds me of final fantasy 7 (the turks) for some reason...LSOAD has some great vocals methinks esp. in the final chorus with the harmonized suspensions.

oh happy, the audio will be fine. ghettoeddo@gmail.com :]

I'd say so...

I've heard from a mate, that James LaBrie is a crack head (I don't know how he knew, he just said he knew.. I don't know if that's very reliable though...)

It really wouldn't surprise me to find out Portnoy is an avid weed smoker.

Edit: My dreams of discovering Portnoy's secret life have been crushed. Thanks heaps Arpanet :(
mary jane ... marijuana?
Mmmmm... no. The samples in "6:00" are from a film version of "The Dead," a short story by James Joyce. Mary Jane is the name of one of the characters. The song is written by Kevin Moore, and it's about many things - but marijuana definitely isn't one of them. The sample goes like this:

"Six o'clock on a Christmas morning..."

"And for what?"
"Well, isn't it for the honor of God, Aunt Kate?"
"I know all about the honor of God, Mary Jane."

And if you can't get into Awake, I dunno what to tell you... it definitely grew on me over time though. "Caught in a Web" was the first track that I really liked. But at this point, I think "Voices" is the best song ever. Literally.

horseypie 03-21-2006 03:22 AM

The Mirror. No doubt. Labrie's voice at the end wher he plays with it is the best I have ever heard him sing. Seriously, he needs to put that sort of emotion into his singing all the time.

Lord Abortion 03-21-2006 07:46 AM

What?

James must be the most emotional vocalist I have ever heard.
I mean look at the spirit carries on, for example...beautiful...goodnight kiss comes into that catagory, too.

Possibly the closest I've heard to him is Matt Barlow of Iced Earth, but his voice is different, natrually.

Labrie has plenty of emotion.
I agree with Ollie ^

I love 'The Silent Man'
Also Caught In A Web and Innocence Faded

Lord Abortion 03-21-2006 10:19 AM

I believe James' voice is officially known as "teh secks"

Good man. I love the vocals on 'Awake'. I got some videos off dt-x . com of them in the studio for SFAM. Ruddess plays some awsome little tunes. "I'm having a wonderful time playing music for my friends"...

Tails 03-21-2006 02:59 PM

Awake was definately the hardest album to get into for me. I bought it for somewhere around $10CDN right when I was getting into DT(I only had ToT and SFAM at this time). When I came home I put it on listened all the way through and said to myself "No wonder this was only $10". I then put it on the shelf for a couple months, and later picked it up, put it in and listened.

It clicked. Now it's my favourite DT album.

Jev 03-21-2006 04:24 PM

Took me a few weeks to get into it too.

GenuineImitation 03-21-2006 07:09 PM

Hey guys. Only 2 weeks until the show. I can't fucking wait anymore.

Happy: How is the DT medley coming along?

IbanezSamurai 03-21-2006 10:46 PM

"We regret to announce that we've been forced to cancel tomorrows show in Detroit.

James is not feeling well and we fear that by doing a 4th show in a row, he'll push himself over the edge and endanger the remaining shows on the tour (and most importantly, the DVD shoot in NYC in 2 weeks)

We are truly sorry to disappoint all of our great fans in Detroit and to have gotten their hopes up (as we only confirmed this show a few weeks ago).
We had hoped to pull off 4 in a row (which we normally never do on an "Evening With" tour), but it doesn't seem meant to be this time....

The local promoter will announce details on refunds soon...

DT"

:( poor James.

Darkness 03-21-2006 10:48 PM

Why don't they just play without him? I think I'd enjoy some of the songs a little more that way...

It's going OK, it's just trying to get it all together that sucks.

ValeOfShadows 03-22-2006 02:12 AM

Im listening to The Glass Prison and is there scratching on a turntable about 6:30 to 7:00 minutes in?

Chu 03-22-2006 02:18 AM

There is, I guess it's like the "KEY" that the song is about to change direction.. But meh, there could be so many different interpretations.

Jev 03-22-2006 04:26 AM
Im listening to The Glass Prison and is there scratching on a turntable about 6:30 to 7:00 minutes in?
Yeah.
That put me off the first time I ever listened to DT.

ValeOfShadows 03-22-2006 04:52 AM

Another thing. Does anyone think that James' voice is too high and annoying live? I think that it has this annoying tone to it that i dont like. In the studio his voice sounds great but i dont know if its due to editing.

National chaos sam 03-22-2006 06:51 AM

hmmmmm. i dont know, hes still an amazing singer, with an amazing range of notes, but your right, after while it does get annoying, and he does make mistakes. anyone ehar his voice seriously jump during "the mirror" in the behind the scenes in Live Scenes In a Memory? ouch.

No dont get me wrong. I think hes an amazing singer with great range but live he just doesnt do it for me.

Kirk's Puppet 03-22-2006 07:47 AM

He's great live now, though.

Jev 03-22-2006 10:07 AM

I think he's amazing live.

Lord Abortion 03-22-2006 10:31 AM

Yeah, me too...he's fantastic...on all the live albums.
