The Great Decay 04-12-2006 06:34 PM

I've recently been digging:

Off Minor - Problematic Courtship
I Hate Myself - 10 Songs
Mineral - The Power of Failing

pixiesfanyo 04-12-2006 06:41 PM

There was no owning in this thread.

But I did see a bunch of people act like fags.

The Promise Ring and The Album Leaf.

The Great Decay 04-12-2006 06:54 PM

I've been meaning to check out The Promise Ring, can you compare them to any other bands?

Wow 04-12-2006 07:01 PM

None come to mind off the bat due to the vocals. They're just really catchy and upbeat. I can send you some songs if you want.

StandingStill 04-12-2006 07:12 PM

Screamo is a genre, its just been badly defined by some of the people round here.

you suck up to some of these guys so hard its ridiculous.

how is that owning? simply because music is a new form of an existing genre does not preclude it from having a genre of its own. by your argument we don't need emo either. its all just hardcore then. its the degree of innovation that would determine whether a subgenre has been created, and obviously there are no clear demarcations. you don't think the term screamo is necessary. thats fine, thats your opinion, but you didn't prove anything.

bottlerocket 04-12-2006 07:20 PM

I've been digging Rockets and Blue Lights, Native Nod, Boys Life, Brainworms, and old New Found Glory (Nothing Gold can Stay is a sweet album).

Dude, I don't suck up to anyone, screw you. Chris and I are friends just like Neeshee so why would I suck up to Neeshee?

-Gav

Wow 04-12-2006 07:35 PM

1. Gav doesn't suck up to anyone.
2. You're wrong.
3. Gav is awesome.
4. Neeshee this song is hard to tab.

thats just sad. you contributed nothing to the conversation. all you did was verbally fellate them. you seem like a chill guy, people will still like you without all that.

cbmartinez 04-12-2006 07:41 PM

Looks like the people seem to agree with me, Neeshee. I had no intention of starting any bitterness. I was just pointing out that you seem to blow some minor clarifications out of proportion when most of the people in this thread (myself included) are guilty of unbecoming behavior just as "bad" as using the term screamo. There's no need to get bitter over it. You didn't own me at all and nor did I own anyone or even try to. I just think you should conserve a little bit of energy by not getting your panties in a bunch every time someone uses screamo. Most importantly Neeshee, we are like best friends forever so we shouldn't be arguing about this in the first place.

Gav, I agree that you can come off as sucking up now and then. Chill.

deadohiosky9 04-12-2006 07:42 PM
you suck up to some of these guys so hard its ridiculous.

I applaud you for making a good case of your opinion. I understand what you are saying, but you have to try to see what i'm saying. You say "simply because music is a new form of an existing genre...", my point is that screamo is NOT a NEW form of anything. Its just a few bands who took a chaotic approach, my point being that they don't justify a new genre. Emo is innovative as hell, so just a few bands who try something different and take hints from each other, doesn't necessarily constitute a new genre. The name emo comes about as a new genre because A LOT of bands took on a new approach to the hardcore scene. It was a bit revolutionary. You might notice a sort of split between the hardcore bands and the so called emo bands. You have stuff like Blacklisted, Modern Life Is War, Comeback Kid, etc. and then you have bands like Sinaloa, Ampere, Gospel, Hot Cross...they are like two different styles/approaches that stem from ONE scene/genre, known as hardcore. So because Emo is a new approach/style it justifies being a new genre. Screamo on the other hand is not a revolutionary approach to emo. Its just a few bands who sped things up and decided to be more chaotic. What if there were 5 more bands who had guitar riffs like Hot Cross and similar vocal styles to Billy? Would that constitute a new subgenre of emo? Certainly not. The same is the case with screamo. I don't have a problem with people calling those few bands "screamo" for classification purposes, thats fine and dandy even though its a little pet peeve of mine, its just that the word "screamo" is often perverted to mean all bands post-saetia, or any new band in the scene, and also suggests that the aforementioned Emo genre is dead. This is also certainly NOT the case. Its ok to refer to a few of those Orchid-esque bands as screamo, but you can't suggest that its a whole new wave of music and that every recent band in the emo scene is a "screamo" band. Somehow "screamo" has become the new "emo" and that is where I have a problem and feel the need to clarify this. But yeah, it is all hardcore essentially, and hardcore is punk rock essentially. I don't care to define bands as "emo" or "modern hardcore" or anything, ultimately its just punk rock to me, and should be to you too.

EDIT TO CHRIS: I wasn't bitter dude, it's all good. I was just kidding around about "owning". And like I said up there, I don't mind it being used in reference to those bands, its just when its used the wrong way with a wrong understanding that gets on my brown nerves. Also Gav isn't sucking up to anyone, he's just kidding around, so chill out dudes.

So I can't screw around with them? Awesome...point of community threads = moot.

By the way, it's not verbally, it's text...just thought I'd point that out.

I don't mean to come off like I'm a suck up. I'm just screwing around and having a good time. Whatever, I'll chill, I guess...

<3s for everyone

So discuss me seeing Poison The Well tomorrow and how much it's going to rule.

The Great Decay 04-12-2006 07:51 PM

Depends on what they play. I didn't like You Come Before You at all.

cbmartinez 04-12-2006 07:52 PM

Psh, that's their best work nigga.

deadohiosky9 04-12-2006 07:53 PM

You Come Before You is sweet.

The Great Decay 04-12-2006 07:54 PM

Ew. Although, I haven't listened to it in a very long while and I only listened to it once. But I recall thinking it was horrible. My favourite release of theirs is The Opposite of December.

your statements about the misuse of the term i fully undestand, and i'm sure its something we all can pretty much agree to. but you not considering there to be enough bands doing a sufficient amount of innovation to warrant the term screamo is an opinion thats more polemical. i see your point, i'm just not convinced on that part of your argument.

deadohiosky9 04-12-2006 07:56 PM

I was into PTW a looong time ago, I had only heard You Come Before You and it f'ucking ruled.

srt-4 wouldn't have even thought about using that word if you hadn't said it before. you obviously set the standard of "cool" and "acceptable" in the world. everyone is conforming!
