Sup all. I've been immersing myself in blues and jazz music lately, attempting to unravel the concepts behind effective improvisation and comping in those forms. Soloing over metal is friggin' easy by comparison, since in that genre dissonances are expected and obvious, whereas jazz makes all the wrong notes sound right in the most mystifying ways. I'm literally unlearning so many of the conventions I've gotten into, soloing and theory-wise.

In addition, here are some post-Christmas albums I've purchased:

Evergrey: The Dark Discovery
Symphony X: The Odyssey
Therion: Secret of the Runes
The Hours Soundtrack composed by Philip Glass
William Coulter: Celtic Crossing
Within Temptation: Mother Earth

I'm also thinking about getting Amon Amarth's "Versus The World."

Of those, I'd say I'm enjoying the Evergrey and Therion the best. Within Temptation is an interesting dilemma. All of the elements of the group are put together in such a way that I should theoretically enjoy it all a lot, but for some reason the use of orchestral textures seems overdone, and the female singer's voice is obviously good but annoys me for some reason. I haven't been able to get into them really, which is disappointing. :(

How has everyone's post-holiday been?

EDIT: Almost up to 7,000, finally. :D

I dunno why everyone is so against school, I really enjoy learning.

It's the only place I consistently meet up with all my friends too.
OMG holy shit I went to IB. God Junior and Senior year is a bitch. Whatever they tell you about it being a good prep for college is superfluous bullshit. College right now (first year) is easier than my Junior year in IB. That hw is waaay to damn much
I have been hearing the same thing about the program. Junior year wasn't too bad, but this year is a real killer. College is going to be like a walk in the park for me then.

What your AIM?

IAJP: Its not that I am against school, Im against doing countless essays (each over 1500 words) on a nightly basis.

Cain 01-02-2006 04:18 PM

College is infinitely more fun than high school, but only because it's designed to make you understand what you want to do and what you need to do and then melding the two together. What you get out of college is entirely dependant on what you put into it. College isn't a walk in the park by any stretch, but hopefully the difficulty of success there only influences you to work harder, provided that you are working towards success in the field where you want to end up.

Why do you ask? Where are you thinking of going?

+1000. i was talking to jim about chads source codes and how he does alot of strange messy ways of hacking.
I think that may be it.
Isn't it still disabled?
yeah, but admins can edit rep anyway.
Well you have four stars, or was it already at four stars before the +1000?

yes. the amount of rep doesn't affect your stars once your past 1000 rep.
less than 3000 posts=3 stars more than 3000=4

I'd recommend looking into some Enslaved or Ensiferum instead. They do the Viking metal act better in my not-in-the-least-bit-humble opinion.

Anyway, my post holiday has been kind of slow. Though my editing software will at last arrive this week. I'm registering my domain name this week also and should have site up as soon as there's some content for it.

Perhaps I will, thanks for the suggestion. :) Although I did like the samples I heard very much. The drums in particular.

But who knows? I may end up purchasing both.

Link me to that site once it's up.

EDIT: Thanks, Axe. I'll be hopping on AIM one of these days, so be prepared.

Enslaved = overrated

Ensiferum = just power metal with viking/folk lyrics.

Amon Amarth > both of those bands

Versus the World is a great start to listen to a simple yet still very epic melodic death metal act, not to mention their lyrics are very viking war/battle/myth based as well. I don't know about other people, but listening to Amon Amarth even though their music is not based around folk insturmentals, I get more of a viking feel to them due to their lyrics.

They seem to convey the brutal side of the vikings and lust of war and battle much better then other bands in the genre. Which to me is what most people think of Vikings when talked about, is the brutal war and battle side to them.

And I am pretty sure their lead singer Johan is a Viking just put in the wrong time period as well...

In conclusion, Amon Amarth do the whole Viking based lyric genre the best. Plus they slay live, one of the best 6 song sets I have ever seen.
