The JoZ 04-30-2005 12:15 PM

Are you going to play along with these songs Ken? Or record from memory? Or what?

SonorKen 04-30-2005 02:04 PM

I can do both. I know them by heart. I may play along to the cd just to make sure that they are accurate because when we play live we change a few minor things at times.

Whichever way Im sure you won't have any problems putting the tracks over it.

Adam Jones is GOD 04-30-2005 03:05 PM
Ok, so who all is involved with this MX project? Who is doing what? Who is coordinating everything?
Im quite happy to mix together people's tracks before I can get recording capabilities of my own.

(although i found THE amp today, this may increase in soon-ness factor).

Ken may just be ranking up with JoZ as personal hero.

Dr. Jake Destructo 04-30-2005 03:08 PM

AJIG-So, currently can't record? If not, then should we have a different guitarist record Stinkfist, or would you like to still do it? How soon will it be until you'll be able to record?

Out of curiosity, what did THE amp turn out to be?

Ill like to have a go personally at some point in any case, so dont worry about song permissions. As long as Ken makes his drum tracks available to us all then im fine with it.

(although may need some non midi drum ones from JoZ, god im demanding)

http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/options.php?id=268 is the amp n question, perfect for my growing needs, and I got a demonstartion which was sweet. Though the price at my store is a bit more than that.

And recording time could be anytime, with a seriously ****ty mic and crappy tone. But a proper job, a while yet. So dont worry about reserving a place for me.

jamesclelland 04-30-2005 03:12 PM
Distortion+delay=my typical heavy tone

The drum machine sucks though. :-/

Anyways, what do you people use for acheiving Jones' tone?
I use a flashback fuzz box for a somewhat vintage sound (some people say he uses fuzz)
Delay
Flange
wah
and finally, a LP classic through a bass amp on high gain with my wannabe vintage pedal board
I keep the bass and treble about equal at 5 and he uses only his bridge pickup, which ever model that maybe. i use the neck pickup as a kill switch which helps with cutting in and out of feedback and from heavy riffage to beautiful silence.

Pubehead 04-30-2005 03:12 PM

any of you guys like the mars volta? they are my favourite, but tool come very close. Lateralus is a masterpiece!

Dr. Jake Destructo 04-30-2005 03:16 PM

I think what I'll do is upload each seperate track to the soundclick I made for this project. (Or have someone mix together the drum, bass, and vox tracks) I am seeing a greater number of guitarists that want to do this, but it seems like Ken is the only drummer, JoZ is the only bassist, and Kage is the only vocalist.

Kage- I got AIM. DrJakeDestructo. Add me. :)

SonorKen 04-30-2005 03:22 PM

Don't worry about the drum tracks, they will be available to you all. I will post up a link with them.

There are some concerns of mine, when I play this live I play the electronic drum intro to it but in the middle I play a cross between the same electronic sounds and the acoustic drums. I can't isolate the actual electronic drum tones that Carey uses in this part. I'll record it and see if you guys think it will be OK. This is the way I play it with Crutch.

If not then well work on trying to isolate those electronic sounds and editing them out. I can do it, it would just take quite a bit of time to get it done.

Adam Jones is GOD 04-30-2005 03:23 PM

Im not fussed on quality at first. im jsut looking for natural drums to play to, instead of midi. JoZ's bass lines have made it more fun, but there are some drum cues that I rely on when playing some songs.

I'm thinking of getting De-loused in the Comatorium.

TheFunDrummer 04-30-2005 03:42 PM

mars volta

they are also one of my favorite bands. I own all of their albums.

Dr. Jake Destructo 04-30-2005 03:43 PM

For those of you recording-What program do you record through? I assume that you're recording into your computer, so what do you guys do? I use Goldwave. It's similair to Cool Edit Pro, but it's smaller, and probably of lesser quality. :(

I used to use Goldwave, but I used a crappy mic and the quality was terrible. Nowadays, I usually use Garageband whenever my friend's willing to bring over his mac computer. Otherwise, you can use a program called Cakewalk Home Studio that's pretty good.

So...on the tracks are we just going to all use Ken's drum tracks, and we each record our parts and we'll see whose sounds the best or what? Like I've said, I can do guitars and most likely vocals.

clearvision 04-30-2005 04:10 PM

You can have votes on whose is best if you want....should probably let JoZ and Ken lay down backing then just do what ya want over the top...unless any other drummers/bassists want a go...

Dr. Jake Destructo 04-30-2005 04:11 PM

For sure, you're doing vox, right? From what I can tell, you're the only Toolophile that can sing. : - / As for the guitar parts, I think that Ken and JoZ are going to upload their tracks. (and your vox, if that is the plan) Then, AJIG is going to mix em together, and upload them for us guitarists to record over. Or, it could work out like this: Ken uploads his, then you and JoZ work off that, then AJIG mixes em, and it's the same from there. I really don't know right now. If I could get all of you guys on at the same time, and start an AIM chat or something, that would be great. My AIM is up about 5 or so posts. Just add me so we can work out the logistics.

Clearvision- I looked into finding some more bassists/drummers, but I failed. I asked Med, and he said that he neither had the recording capabilities or the ability to play most of Carey's tracks. I would really like to find some more drummers/bassits/vocalists so that JoZ, Ken, and Kage aren't obligated to do every song.

Well... I COULD do bass parts, but which songs are you doing agian? And I would have to borrow my friends bass, which isn't really a problem.
I play bass pretty decent I guess, its kinda what I started out on.

Dr. Jake Destructo 04-30-2005 04:29 PM

Well, The JoZ is already doing Stinkfist, and I am kind of pushing for Part of Me next. It shouldn't be too hard

Add me, we'll talk in further detail spiralout7@gmail.com is my msn DrJakeDestructo is my AIM.

freaks_refuge 04-30-2005 04:39 PM

I could attempt some bass parts in a week or so when I get my bass back from being repaired.
I'm not sure I'm good enough for any of this stuff however. And the quality might be rather crap.

Dr. Jake Destructo 04-30-2005 04:46 PM

I think for now, The JoZ is going to be the full time bassist. At least for the time being.

SonorKen 04-30-2005 06:00 PM

I will do the majority of the songs. If another drummer wants to jump in thats fine with me. As far as what programs I use I don't. I will be using an actual studio interface to record mine, then I'll burn it to a cd and send it to Joz.

We should all have a chat and see what everyone thinks.
Also, Im in the process of puttin together some of my bands covers of Tool songs. The recording is horrible as it is an open mic going into a 6 track cassette recorder, but you'll get the idea. I'll try to have that up within 2 hours.

Darkness 04-30-2005 06:33 PM

Cool Ken.. I'd like to hear that.

Rothmans 04-30-2005 06:57 PM

Well I can put a few guitar tracks down tomorrow I have a smiliar tone to adams and I have a boss me - 50 which is handy its jut that I need a good mic but dont put my word on it.

If anyone is botherd with me doing it just name songs and I can put it down.

stoner dude 04-30-2005 07:32 PM

Can anyone recommend me some bands that are similar to Tool, or bands that people who like Tool generally also like?

Darkness 04-30-2005 07:36 PM

Opeth.

stoner dude 04-30-2005 07:43 PM

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that i already know about opeth, isis and Dead Soul Tribe...
But thanks anyway.

Rothmans 04-30-2005 07:47 PM
Oh yeah, forgot to mention that i already know about opeth, isis and Dead Soul Tribe...

Well king crimson would be good and porcupine tree (I guess)

another good band would be neurosis, people think they have similarities.

ThePatient 04-30-2005 08:04 PM

If there's any songs the Joz doesn't want to do on bass, I can probably fill in. My recording capabilities aren't that great, but I've never put a ton of effort into doing it, so who knows. I haven't seen anyone mention H., and I would love to do that song if anyone is interested.

stoner dude 04-30-2005 08:04 PM

Thanks.

What's the best King Crimson stuff to start with?
