Yeah, he's one of a kind. They threw away the mold when they made him. I don't envy him though, I'm glad to see there is still talent in the music world. :chug:

denboy 12-26-2005 11:51 AM

Envy is such a negative word.. you're right, I don't envy him, I just wish I one day will come even close to having accomplished what he has

Yeah no kidding man, me too. It's hard not to envy him though, ya know? If I had 8 albums, each a landmark in music for generations to come, I'd be the happiest person in the world. :)

My thoughts exactly. I am already looking forward for some new Opeth. I just hope to god it's heavy.

I got a feeling that they will change. More then likely the label wants to make them radio friendly.

vashts80 12-26-2005 12:22 PM

They won't change. If Roadrunner let them release GR, which was done long before they signed to RR, then RR won't make them change.

Shadius 12-26-2005 12:37 PM

They'll probably try. Though I can't see Opeth selling out at all. I think Ghost Reveries is as light as it's going to get, and I rekon it can only get more progressive from here.

Darkness 12-26-2005 01:35 PM

I think Opeth will be fine. I hope Steven Wilsom comes back into the mix next time.

True, but then again they are on the same label as nickleback.

And Slipknot.

...at least the singer from Nickelback is a fan of Opeth.

i do too. the production was so much heavier on blackwater park and deliverance than it is on ghost reveries.

and if you're worried about opeth changing, you're listening to the wrong band. the thing that makes opeth great is the fact that they change. i personally don't want to see a rehash of morningrise or still life.

and if you're worried about them being changed by the record label, read chapter ten of the opeth biography on their official site.

I know what your saying, But labels have an extreme amount of power, and if a bands doesnt comply they can get dropped like a sack of potatoes

Yes, but Opeth is a big band and has such an established fanbase that they would find another label immediately. The only changes Opeth makes are the ones they want.
Yes, but Opeth is a big band and has such an established fanbase that they would find another label immediately. The only changes Opeth makes are the ones they want.
Only time will tell.
the only reason i say this is because of what happened to CoB

Shadius 12-26-2005 03:16 PM

Opeth have proved themselves over the course of like.. 8 albums. The only thing the record label will be able to do is make them release pretty sub-standard videos and make single cuts like for the Grand Conjuration, and I'm not even sure if Opeth will want them doing that again.

suspect 12-26-2005 03:49 PM

I'm pretty sure that Alexi is the one behind the changes to CoB. You can clearly see the evolution to this style over the last three CD's. You can't say that HCDR is very different to AYDY.

Actually most of the material for Damnation wasn't from Mikael's originality, but from Porcupine Tree's musical genius: Steven Wilson. Watch Lamentations Disc 2 (Making of Damnation + Deliverance, and band interviews) and you will see what I mean.

Seeing as Mikael wrote the songs, I think you could say it was more than not down to his musical ability, and a small part of it was down to Mr. Wilson.

Got my Opeth watch for Christmas. Blackwater Park face.
Guess who got Lamentations?

With my Christmas money I'mma buy Damnation and some ( )peth shirts.

I also bought Deliverance on eBay for 11 dollars.

Best. Deal. Ever.

From what I remember of that, Mike had a lot of soft guitar material written for Deliverance, but Steven Wilson said that it could work better in the double album format, one soft and one heavy.

Wilson only actually contributed one full song (in terms of lyrics), which was Death Whispered a Lullabye

Deth 12-26-2005 09:14 PM

Wilson just adds to what Mikeal already had. It wouldn't be that much different without him.

I don't think it was Steven who came up with the idea though, they were doing it before he came aboard.

Darkness 12-26-2005 09:15 PM

Yeah, the heavy/soft thing came before Steve worked with them.

Steve added those nice keyboard lines though. Those probably wouldn't be there without him.

Deth 12-26-2005 09:19 PM

I agree, though someone else would have done them.

got pics of that opeth watch?

Werny 12-27-2005 07:40 AM
Hi guys, I wanna go to the Melbourne Opeth concert in April, are their concerts 18+? I'm only 16... :( My friend says because their are two gigs for Melbourne one should be 18+ and one all ages. Anyone know about this??

(this'll be my first concert experience ever :D)
....same! Same! And same! It'll be my first concert, I'm 16, it's in Melbourne... yo dude I'll have to meet you there!

I'm lucky, I've got no where to stay up there so Mum has offered to drive me up there and stay with me in a motel or something. Yeah!

But yes there is the issue about the age. Well don't the venues decide? You're in Melbourne, go ask at The Forum. I'll ask/search around, and if I find out I'll tell you.

EDIT: ...isn't The Forum where The Lion King is playing? If so, I don't reckon we'll have to worry about age. Oh, and anyone know how much tickets are?

Det_Nosnip 12-27-2005 10:30 AM

Per?

Darkness 12-27-2005 11:28 AM

..Per wasn't in the band at the time, nore was he producing Damnation.

Nore would he have had a job with Opeth if it weren't for Damnation.

He was touring during the Deliverence tour as well, ie: Before Damnation was actually released. If Steve hadn't done it, maybe Per would have done it, who knows, Mikael had apparently wanted him to work with them for a long time. Though, I think without Steve the recording process could have gone even worse and both albums would have suffered, (Read the Opeth history thing on their site, and watch the Lamentations documentary; very interesting).

Darkness 12-27-2005 09:15 PM

Indeed Steve kept the band together during those albums.

Jude 12-27-2005 09:52 PM

Now I really want Lamentations even more. Is it specifically for DVD-A players (like the PT album DVDs) or for any DVD player?
