Heh heh. Echoes is a miraculous song...and I love albatrosses. Wish You Were Here is probably my least favourite song from the album, which still puts it higher than 80% of the music I listen to.

I do believe you're the first person I've ever seen say that they preferred Welcome to the Machine and Have a Cigar to WYWH.

dr._feelgood 09-06-2005 11:13 AM

Wish You Were Here is probably one of my favorite songs of all time.

Prince of Darkness 09-06-2005 12:25 PM

For me, Echoes is an average epic, compared to epics like Dogs and SOYCD. Dogs, being my favorite song of Pink Floyd(at the moment), is a perfect song. The lyrics are mind boggling and the feeling when it goes:'' So that when they they turn their backs on you....You'll get the chance, to Put the knife in!" That really is amazing. No band of today can recreate such brilliance.

Depending on my mood, WYWH can be my least favorite song on that album.

Gilmour's slow solos in that song blow me away. I especially love the end of the second slow one and they transition so flawlessly into the lyrics "And when you lose control...".

LF96 09-06-2005 12:37 PM

I got all of my Pink Floyd albums cheap on vinyl:

- Atom Heart Mother: 5 euros on ebay
- Darkside Of The Moon: 50 cents on a second hand market
- Wish You Were Here: 1 or 2 euros on a second hand market
- Animals: 5 euros on ebay
- The Wall: 2 or 3 euros on a second hand market

All of those in excellent condition, except for the fact that someone wrote something on AHM and Animals... I'm probably purchasing Meddle next, as it goes for some euros on ebay usually, same goes for The Final Cut. :)

Pigs also is an amazing song. It brings in the darker side of the Animals album and, again the lyrics, bind blowing. Rogers knew what he was doing.

Prince of Darkness 09-06-2005 01:35 PM
I know that we did some of Wish You Were Here and Animals, but I don't remember any new songs being done recently. The links should all be in the first post, anyway.

I just don't see the fuss about Echoes really. Sure, it's a good song, but it's not the best on Meddle in my humble opinion (I rather like Saint Tropez), and compared to their other epics it does lack something. Dogs is an extraordinary song though. Lyrically that album has Waters at his best I always think, as the nastiness that's in quite a lot of Floyd's music comes out better in it without ever going over the top.
At his best...hmm. The Wall.

MBS 09-06-2005 01:46 PM

I like Echoes a lot because if you listen to about the first 10 minutes before it goes into the squealy whale part, it's really relaxing.

shamed-angel 09-06-2005 01:58 PM
The Wall is great, and it's probably my favourite Floyd album, but it gets dragged down by the second half of Disc 1, which is clearly the weakest bit of the album in my opinion. The one lyrical weakness that the album has in my opinion is the repetition. Obviously that's part of the big idea, but it drags occasionaly for me on songs like Empty Spaces and Goodbye Cruel World which I don't think are really actually needed. But yeah, it's an amazing album lyrically for the most part.
In my opinion. It was and still is a rock classic. I prefer it to any of their other albums, but I'd say it was more musically amazing than lyrically.

I actually disagree on Empty Spaces. I really think its one of their best songs, and although I do think it gets dragged down a bit in the middle of disk one, its still probably my favorite album ever.

Prince of Darkness 09-06-2005 02:03 PM

Yeah. Empty Spaces, man. It's so dark and, beautiful.
The Wall Disk 1 is the better one. Although both is amazing, Side 1 has the more striking songs. Ohh. The Wall.

Lunch 09-06-2005 02:08 PM

I prefer the second disc. I think it's cool how he builds the wall, etc. etc. on disc 1, but the major draw into the plot of The Wall for me was the isolation and the insanity that is caused by the wall. So for me, disc 1 is sort of the preparation for disc 2.

robo2448 09-06-2005 02:26 PM

For me, disc 1 has the better songs, but the songs flow together better on disc 2.

DeusExMachina 09-06-2005 02:55 PM

I think disc 1 is more consistent, but disc 2 has some absolutely incredible tracks. Overall, I probably prefer disc 2.

Jean Chrétien 09-06-2005 02:56 PM

why isnt hey you in the movie???

they only have panzers breaking free, i think?

Prince of Darkness 09-06-2005 02:58 PM

Although Disk 2 is amazing, I'm so sick of it, cause it's in my mom's car. So everytime we ride with here, we listen the same songs. We're too lazy to put Disk 1 in. Shame on us.

Edit: Post 700. whoop whoop for me!

Lunch 09-06-2005 02:59 PM

I don't think either is more consistent, I just think disc 2 is all around better. Hey You>Is There Anybody Out There? is amazing.

Brewer14 09-06-2005 03:03 PM

I really need to pick up The Wall..looks like I'm buying 2 Floyd CDs this weekend.

DeusExMachina 09-06-2005 03:24 PM

Definitely pick up the Wall. It's well worth it. The Wall is what got me into PF initially.

Jean Chrétien 09-06-2005 03:27 PM

don't get the wall, its overrated and inconsistant, save comfortably numb and a few others, get DKSOTM/WYWH/M(DLE)/A(MLS)/ or any other pink floyd abulm, except the final cut, which blows :smoke:

I disagree with this post in it's entirety.

The Wall is NOT inconsistent, whatever that means, and The Final Cut is brilliant, albeit a bit depressing. It's got some excellent composition, and is lyrically one of Waters best.

Explain your opinion on these inconsistencies in the Wall?

Why would any Pink Floyd fan tell someone not to get The Wall? Even if it isn't your favourite PF album (it isn't mine by a longshot), it's still a great album. Whenever I wanna listen to that album, I just watch the movie. Unless I'm in my car, then I put on the casette. I've only listened to that album like five or so times on vinyl....never on CD! :amaze: I just realized that.

edit- and some people need to learn the difference between "filler" and songs that are important to the theme of the album, despite not being the best songs.

Jimmy 09-06-2005 03:38 PM

Most people don't agree with my choice of favorite album, but I think Meddle is Floyd's best. Echoes is 23 minutes of pure brilliance.

DeusExMachina 09-06-2005 03:45 PM
edit- and some people need to learn the difference between "filler" and songs that are important to the theme of the album, despite not being the best songs.
Exactly. Just because a song is short doesn't mean it doesn't serve a purpose in the album as a whole.

123. I listened to The Final Cut last night through headphones, while laying in my bed, in the dark. That album kicks some major ***. Absurdly underrated.
I don't think either is more consistent, I just think disc 2 is all around better. Hey You>Is There Anybody Out There? is amazing.
I agree. Disk has plenty of songs that can really stand out on their own, in the form of Hey You, Nobody Home, Comfortably Numb, Run Like Hell and The Trial. I also prefer it from a plot stand point, although disk one is still amazing, and I can see why some prefer it.

Jean Chrétien 09-06-2005 03:52 PM

the wall might be worthwhile as a concept, as a story, or as a movie, but as a collection of songs (which is what an album is, as far as I'm concerned), it doesn't hold up. the quality of the music is wildly inconsistant (comfortably numb vs... maybe... waiting for the worms, anyone?). it does tell a cohesive story, but insofar as it tries to be cohesive musically, it pales in comparison to DSOTM, WYWH, and even animals. musically speaking, the worthwhile material would make a good single cd, but strung out over two, the album becomes painful, not masterful

PinkZeppelin27 09-06-2005 03:58 PM

I got animals this weekend and its quickly becoming my favorite floyd cd. I love it. Which cd should I get next though. Ive got animals, DSOTM, WYWH, the wall, and PATGOD.

Jean Chrétien 09-06-2005 03:58 PM
