I've asked this before, but do you think you could upload/send me the second disc of the Who's Next Deluxe edition? I really want to get my hand on that live material.
I offer e-head in return. And by that I mean I'll upload something for you.
I'm so sorry, my computer is very slow and can't upload albums. Next year I'll have a faster computer hopefully able to do it, but that is a long way away. You might wanna cheak with some other people in the forums who might have it. I think its worth it. |
Thanks buuuuds. Hey.. fwq.. your icon is nearly as awetastic as JonG's. Heh.. I keep wanting to see what happens next; that guy cracks me up, just turns and looks. *laughs* good stuff.
I might think about the Isle of Wight DVD. If its not that much more money, ill probably spend a bit more for the visuals.. cause when it comes to live, I want that concert experience.. depends on how much $ ive already spent, and whether the DVD ends up costing a lot more. Live at Leeds is definately on my list though. A friend just sent me I'm A Boy.. loved it. "Glad to see you coming over to the light side man." That bastard.. lol. |
Yeah I would put my money towards Live at Leeds before the Isle of Wright DVD.
A good Who live clip, short as it may be, is on the Montery Pop Festivle DVD set. They have a really energetic version of My Generation and they smash their instruments at the end. I love watching Keith Moon adjusting his shirt in between drum rolls. Hes too much. All around the Montery Pop Festivle DVD is great. Of course Hendrix's preformance is outstanding, I think its his best visually. I just can't get over Wild Thing. Not just when he burns his guitar but when he drops to the floor and does the backwards summersault while still playing and dosen't miss a note. Amazing. I sometimes wonder if it wasn't for the Who if he would have set his guitar on fire. I know one of the reasons he did it was because he was going on after the Who and didn't want to be upstaged by their instrument smashing so he lit his guitar on fire before he smashed it. |
I love Hendrix's show, but as a Who fan first and foremost he definitely stole a lot of Townshend's act. Actually when Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton first saw Hendrix, they told Pete the next time they saw him that this new guitarist was stealing his idea.
|
Yeah Hendrix defenetly took some of his stage moves from Townsend. I could even spot a few while watching the Isle of Wright DVD. Though Hendrix was innovative in enough ways to borrow a couple ideas from other people with out calling it a sin.

Yeah, and then when Townshend confronted him at Woodstock Hendrix told him to f off and threatened to kick his arse. Pete's feelings were hurt, reportedly. Because he liked and respected Jimi as a musician. Pete should of cracked a guitar over his head. :smash: And speaking of head, I may take you up on some of that e head, Lunch. If I can figure out what I can do for you.... ....your just lucky I live 3000 miles away from you. Because if not, the "e" part wouldn't even figure, lol. Oh, and on another note, your little thread here seems to be thriving. I would dare to say that since MX is the 35th or 36th largest message board in the world and certainly one of the biggest devoted to music and musicians, this thread may be one of the biggest and certainly one of the best Who threads around. I don't even think that Who board link you supplied awhile back has this kind of action and quality. So good going, man. This thing started a couple of weeks after I first got here and it's really sometihng I look forward to. And the fact that we aren't fanboys in here is really refreshing. With a band as flawed as The Who you really can't afford to be a fanboy, I don't think. And I still think it's those flaws, the imperfections of this band, that is one of the things that makes them so special. I enjoy discussing the music and songs of this band. The focus for me when it comes to The Who has always been the spirit of the band, the words and music of Townshend, and his band that brought it all together. It really is hard to describe. And I guess that's why this band is so great. Anyway, I'm happy to be here amongst all you Who Heads and yes, welcome to all the more recent members of this thread and newcomers alike. At gamefaqs.com where I post on rare occasion and steal thread topics for my alt account here, they have a little Who Board titled "Tommy's Interactive Experiance". Or some crap like that. It's pathetic. It's been there forever, 77 posts total in over 6 months, 50 of those are spam, and yet some are sincere, lol. I've often thought of leaving a link for the faithful, but imagine what that might get us? Well, probably not too much, since I think a total of 5 people post there. Better to leave well enough alone. Long Live Rock, and all that good stuff. See 'ya.... |
I'll drink to that.
Hendrix was such an amazing and innovative guitarist, he really didn't need to smash/burn his guitar. People were already blown away by his performance, and he shows weren't really based on anger and aggression the way the Who's were at the time of the auto-destruction. |
I had heard that the guitar that Hendrix burnt was actually one of Townsends. He stole it from right under Townsend's big nose!

Mmmm... im really enjoying Live at Leeds, I got the deluxe edition.. and it was worth it; even if just for incredible Moon-age.

Sweet. Did you buy any other albums? |

Wild Thing at Monterey is amazing.
I like the new thread name. I just bought my second copy of Live At Leeds deluxe editon today. Hopefully I won't ever need to buy another one, but it'll probably end up all scratched up and unplayable like the last one did eventually. I felt like such a badass driving around today pumping Live At Leeds. |
Sweet.
Did you buy any other albums?
Picked up a few other albums because of recommendations from earlier in the CR thread. Abbey Road and Rubber Soul by the fab four. *tries in vain to impersonate a Liverpool accent* Truth by Jeff Beck aaand a big pack of blanks. I held back big time, was proud of myself. |

Everything is incredible on that album, but Moon shines maybe the most. His energy and stamina are unbelievable. Entwistle is right up there with him though. Heaven and Hell is such a great launching pad for their drum and bass fill combination. |

Beck's playing is fantastic, and personally I don't really mind Stewart's voice but some do. |

A thread name change! (with a lyric that townsend now regrets writing.) |
Yea, but it's one of the most important statements ever made in rock 'n roll. Actually, probably the most important song lyric to really exemplify what rock is all about.
I was just about to mention that I really dig the thread title change. |
Ya'll can thank JXD for the new name. He brought it up in the Ask The Mods thread. His love for all things relating to the Who knows no bounds.
|
Yea I saw that. I didn't comment though cause I didn't have any input.

Wow guys... I had always considered Moon to be one of the absolute greats in drumming.. but felt that he lacked raw power, especially compared to a guy like Bonham. That may be a blasphemic statement on its own, and it certainly feels that way now. Bonham is still (and may well forever be) my favorite musician period, but Moon has captured a much larger amount of my heart with Live at Leeds.
Just goes to show how perception can change of a band based on live material. I always loved Cobwebs and Strange, and his wild fills in their studio stuff.. but wow. Very nice. The whole rhythm teamwork between Moon and Entwistle is as good as it gets on this album. And yea, about THE musical statement of the 60s. I thought that as he aged, Townsend modified what he meant to not really say old aged, but old as in a state of mind. You can be 70 years old but still have fun.. im with him there. Hope I die before I get old. |
Yeah Moon on LaL... he's just everywhere. Absolutely insane. Blows my mind every single time.
|
I really can't say enough about how incredible Moon and Entwislte are together. The musicianship is outstanding. I love the way they can carry a whole song, and how they open up so many doors for Pete to do whatever he wants. He's not much of a solo guitarist, but he's able to put what he can do over this pure wall of sound and energy supplied from John and Keith and that makes the whole show sound better.
My favorite part on the Isle of Wight DVD is the part in Young Man Blues where Pete windmills and then lets his guitar slide down, then he hits a couple more windmills and shakes his guitar. Not only is Pete great to watch at this point, but it's so stunning to hear the sound Entwislte and Moon produce behind Townshend's one chord. I would give anything to see the Who in 1970. I've always loved Moon and Bonham for a number of reasons, but their driving stamina is something that has to be respected. They kept up that power and volume for three hours a night, I can't even comprehend that. |
Also just wanted to say Sparks live is one of the greatest things I've ever seen or heard.
Yes man, yes!! Sparks is my favorite song, and Live at Leeds and the Isle Of Wight fest are sadly the only two live recordings I have of that song. But it's still so godly. If anyone here owns the Maximum R n' B Box Set or even a downloading program, have you heard the song The Ox? I think it was mainly a collaborative effort but Entwistle gets credit for it. It's probably one of the greatest songs in The Who's history, and one of my all-time favorites. Definitely, definitely check it out if you are any sort of Who fan. Thanks.:thumb: |
One of my favorite stories about Moon is one time they were late going to the airport and all of a sudden Keith yelled "oh my god I forgot something" and thinking it was something like drugs they turned around. He ran up to the hotel room, threw the TV out the window, and said "ok now we can go" :p
To Tusk: I remember when I realized how great Moon was. It was around then that the Who became one of my favorite bands. |
I agree with Lunch on the Moon - Entwistle combination. They created just such a large wall of sound that was able to support Pete wherever he went, and it was always huge. There were never any times where the music felt empty. Not once. This is just further re-enforced when listening to LaL.
|
Well, the most important thing in a rythem section is the marriage between bassist and drummer...needless to say, Moon and Entwistle were possibly had the tightest marriage ever between bass and drums. (though I would hardly call them a "rythem section".
Woah, the name change made me miss this thread for a while. It's nice though. :thumb: |
Has any seen footage of Norman Gunston having water dumped on him by Keith Moon?
Norman is this rather famous Aussie comedian who made a big name for himself playing a pale, balding reporter with several shaving cuts. He was a real icon, and it's amazing the celebrities he got access to. Most of them were Americans, who are born without a sense of humour, but most of the Brits he interviewed got it. Anyways, he asked Keith a few questions about what's the best way to throw a TV out of a window. He kept at it, and Keith got a cup of water, poured it over Norman's head, and then called him an "Aussie Slag". Apparently, though, Keith laughed about it afterwards when someone told him it was actually a joke. |

I used to have that picture as my desktop for awhile. |

HAHA! Great stuff, I needed that laugh. Speaking of GREAT rock stories, not as much for laughs or shock value as to imagine the fscking crowd, I know you guys are Who fans, but everyone can appriciate this. There are rumors that after recording "The Ox," Moonie passed out over his drumset.
There are rumors that after recording "The Ox," Moonie passed out over his drumset.
Speaking of Moon passing out, how would you love to be the guy who was plucked from the crowd to replace a passed out Moon for one of the shows. I mean honestly whever I go to a show before I go I always have some kind of fantesy of whoever I'm seeing say "oh it turns out that we need someone to play guitar with us for the show so could Jim Daly please come up" And that guy got to do it. Though talk about something to live up to. |

If my memory serves me right, that guy was Scott Halpin. |
Does anybody know how he did? I mean I assume that he did well because otherwise I don't think it would be as well known, but like I said replacing Moon certainly is somthing to live up to.
|
According to both Before I Get Old: The Story of the Who by David Marsh, and vh1 he did just fine, considering who's shoes he was filling.
|
Good for him, hes defenetly in the top ten luckiest people on the planet in my mind.
I need to get some more Who albms. I only have Who's Next
heh dont worry, were the same. Except mine is their greatest hits. If I order from another country that will cost way too much for me but if I download their songs there's something lacking in it. I dont know, I tend to appreciate music more if I buy the album. But I do have the isle of wight dvd |
Hey, nice name change. Its so anthemic, I love it!
|
Good thing they had a decent drummer in the audience, then.
I don't have the deluxe edition of Who's Next. :( I should have searched more for it. I second Lunch's motion.
I'm not sure if I have it or not? I keep hearing of a Who's Next with bonus (Deluxe?) live material. But I've never seen it. Have I? What I have is what my music service offers. It's Who's Next with what sound like alt takes of Pure and Easy, Baby Don't You Do It, Too Much Of Anything, Behind Blues Eyes, Naked Eye, Water, and I Don't Even Know Myself. It's real good stuff, but it's not "live". Although a few cuts sound like they may of been recorded "live in the studio" to some extent. Moon is great on Don't You Do It Baby. These cuts are of interest and are desirable, but certainly not what I think Lunch and you are describing. It's very good, but not completely unfamiliar to Who fans.
The Isle at Wight DVD is pretty good, similar set list to Live at Leeds. The performance isn't quite the same calibur though. And the Kids Are Alright DVD is a great movie stretching the Who's whole career, at least up until Keith Moon died in 1978.
You are right about the performances. The Leeds shows were just great. And to think they would do that on a nightly basis. And since you mention TKAA I want to mention the VHS/DVD 30 Years Of Maximum R&B. Out of print VHS Available at Amazon used for under $10. A crazy price. Lunch and anyone else who has not seen this, it is a must have. You must own it. VHS or not. If you have an old VCR around, BUY IT NOW. Go to Amazon and read the reviews for yourself. The out of print DVD is a valued collectors item. Amazon has them. Used prices start at $60.00. New in a sealed package prices start at $87.00. That may give you an idea of what you are missing. I tell you what, even though I have the VHS, I am very tempted to grab a DVD. Even at those prices. It's just that good. Great posting yesterday. I missed it all. I want to address many of these other posts but am so tired I can barely keep my eyes open. Only two hours sleep coming, too. If I am lucky. I'll get to all this good stuff later. I really can't even read right now. I just wanted to give you all a heads up about the 30 Years Of Maximum R&B video.... EDIT: The 30 Years Of Maximum R&B video is not a matching peice to the audio CD box set of the same name. So don't be fooled by the name. It's altogether a whole other thing. EDIT 2: I'm exactly 40 posts behind you in this thread, Lunch. Counting my 23 posts on my first JohnXDoe account, before it was accidentally deleted less then a month into my membership here.. I WILL overcome. :p |
I really dig that avatar too man. I used to have that picture as my desktop for awhile.
Thanks. I saw it in an Uncut magazine so I looked around for it. I have a few decent pictures of Moon exploding his kit with fireworks too. And a rare video drum solo(Not the damned goldfish one). |
