Waters wrote the lyrics, but Gilmour added the musical soul to the songs.

Gilmour came up with the chord progression and melody to Comfortably Numb before Waters had the lyrics to it.

ABITW pt.2 would have just been plain old guitar strumming if Gilmour didnt add the disco feel to it.

Dogs is great lyrically, but Gilmours amazing guitar work made it amazing.

So basically, they complemented each other very well.
Obviously your a big Gilmour fan. I just value the lyrics more I guess.

Alright, for anyone who is still in the dark about DSOTM and Wizard Of Oz, you start the album at the third roar of the MGM lion at the beginning of the movie (preferably the special edition DVD).

And its supposed to sync how??

DeusExMachina 12-12-2004 09:54 AM

Also, for anyone who thinks the sync was meant to work, let me set you right once and for all.

The band said they didn't plan it! NO ONE involved with the making of the album has even HINTED that it was planned. And if you think its some vast conspiracy, here's the final nail in the coffin. The sync doesn't even work with the VHS and the vinyl record! And considering there was no DVD or CD at the time, its IMPOSSIBLE for them to have planned it. Case closed.

Ooo, thankers :)

I believe there's also some DVD that plays them both, one out of each speaker if you have 2 speakers.

Riva 12-12-2004 07:27 PM

I know, but I am still sick of everyone who hears it
a) Posting it outside of this thread
b) Asking the same moronic questions.

I just had to post it, after that last thread in R&M.

DeusExMachina 12-12-2004 08:56 PM

Is the Echoes/2001 synch any good?

magicbus 12-12-2004 09:05 PM

Haven't tried that one. Might be cooler because Echoes is mostly instrumental so it'd compliment it nicely, rather than synch up. Unless I have no idea what you are talking about...

Kingofdudes 12-12-2004 10:06 PM

Who do you guys think had the best solo career?

I really cant comment, since I have only heard Gilmour's solo stuff.

-Vote for Gilmour

I dunno, but from what i have heard of Gilmours and Waters i would choose Gilmour.

Dr. Jake Destructo 12-12-2004 10:14 PM

I read this in a "music with references to literature" thread. Someone said that "Animals" was about George Orwell's novel [u] Animal Farm [u]. Is this true?

Awesome book, and awesome album.

yes its true, yes it has been discussed before.
Is the Echoes/2001 synch any good?
Well, apparently, Waters was approached to make a song for the ending of the movie. He declined, but he and the band regretted the decision once the movie came out, and they saw how mind blowing it was.

So they made sure the keystone of their new album would be what the song for the ending of 2001 would have sounded like if they had written it.

I'm pretty sure that's how it went down.
Who do you guys think had the best solo career?

Well, I have only heard Gilmour and Wright, but I think Gilmour has the more succesful career, although Wright certainly improved once he got out from under Waters' thumb.

Riva 12-13-2004 12:29 AM

Oh, and boys, I shall be trying my uni e-mail, rather than my gmail account, since gmail is so damned annoying.

appreciate_it 12-13-2004 12:40 AM

Gilmour definatly.

Just on a topic that has probably been brought up before, how ever many times i listen to Com. Numb, and Thin Ice, i like it even more. I think they are so good. Just listening to different parts, and isolating the instruments when you hear it. ANyone feel the same about any Pink songs?

DeusExMachina 12-13-2004 02:16 PM

Hmm... I heard something about that Echoes plannsed as the "end" of 2001, but I'm a little skeptical about it, since it was never mentioned in the biography I read, and because Echoes is built on 36 seperate ideas that were compiled into one song. Could still be true though.

On a side note, whats this about Vote Gilmour/Guitrguy/HeavyRiva for top R&M poster? I'm confused.

I haven't ever advertised my name, but gilmour has.

Oh where I edited the post, I was just joking.

magicbus 12-13-2004 02:41 PM

I discovered this while reading about Animals last night. Might be of use.

Riva 12-13-2004 05:44 PM

Yes, Brian and I only edited Aaron's post, because he is a advertising spam whore, and we aren't. :)

I see what you mean about the link, magicbus. Looks quite interesting.

Good to see you posting in here more often as well. :)

DeusExMachina 12-13-2004 09:14 PM

The Sex Pistols weren't really all that politically charged, they just supported anarchy for shock value. Animals is a very political, "punk rock attitude" type of album. Reminds me somewhat of something The Clash would write.

magicbus 12-13-2004 09:18 PM

Glad I could be of help. Riva, I added this to subscribed threads (originally only the cr thread), so I'll be checkin here all the time.

When you guys were talking about the 2001/Echoes synch, you meant just the song right? At the time, I kept thinking you meant synching Meddle, not just a single song.

Sam 12-13-2004 09:39 PM

MY favorite Wall lyric:

"There must be some mistake/I didn't mean to let them take away my soul/Am I too old?/Is it too late?"

I just like the entire presentation of that line in the song.

Even though it apparently isn't about one of my favorite books, it's still one of my favorite Pink Floyd albums.

DeusExMachina 12-13-2004 09:47 PM

I think the funny thing about that link is the page is titled ingsoc.com. Not sure whether that is good or bad.

Floyd kiks ***. im not sure wat the creepyest song is, but the dreamiest is prolbably julia dream on the echoes album, which is a hella good album. Stoner music all the way! (especailly if ur stoned)

Creepiest song, I'd say "Dogs." Trippy.

Riva 12-14-2004 02:10 AM

The Echoes synch is for Echoes only. I'm pretty sure the rest of the album doesn't fit in.

And way to suck the enjoyment outta the song for me, Med. Now I'm going to feel depressed everytime I listen to it... :p

For me, the creepiest song is Waiting For The Worms.

Riva 12-14-2004 02:34 AM

I enjoy all of The Wall, from beginning to end. 'Tis a rich tapestry, with each thread as worthy as the last of attention and love.

Although I despise horror movies/thrillers, I love all forms of music, whether it be horrifying, angry or happy.

Gossamer175 12-14-2004 11:29 AM

I'd have to say either The Trial or Flaming were the trippiest to me.

Perdoct 12-14-2004 11:34 AM

Hey did you guys see Saturday Night Live The band did a re make of comfortablly numb that was bull I think my favorite part of the movie is waiting for the worms not for the song but for the animation as well

Gossamer175 12-14-2004 11:43 AM

The freakiest part of the movie was when Goodbye Blue Sky plays. The whole image of the bird ripping the city out of the ground and the blood and gore underneath is just strange and somewhat disturbing.

DeusExMachina 12-14-2004 04:25 PM

Med, how could you! I love that song. Is There Anybody Out There is is a gloomy song, but it's wonderful. I love it. The guitar playing is hauntingly beautiful and fits perfectly. Although I'd say the freakiest part of the movie in a lot of ways was when Pink shaved himself completely. Especially since that wasn't even scripted... Bob Geldof just got so into the character that he did it because he thought it felt "right." Apparently Syd Barrett's ex started crying when she saw that scene, because it reminded her so much of how Syd was.

guitarded_chuck 12-14-2004 04:46 PM

The 2001/Echoes synch is the trippiest thing of all time. Theres a big story behind it too. But I already posted a big thing on it, so I won't get into it again.

I don't know about the interpretations. The song was in fact written to go along with this sequence of the movie, but it was just written enhance it. I think. Like I said, I posted the entire story on it awhile back. I might find it.

guitarded_chuck 12-14-2004 04:52 PM

Well.. that wasn't too hard to find.
Has anyone ever did Echoes with 2001 A Space Odessey (sp?) ? It's awesome. If you haven't done it, and are a fan of the Wizard of Oz with DSOTM, you'll definitly like this one way more. Simply start playing Echoes when the last part of 2001 comes on. I believe it's called "Jupiter and Beyond".

The story behind Echoes is Stanley Kubrick asked Pink Floyd to write a song for this part of the movie, to kind of go along with the last scene. (trippiest scene of all-time) Dave wanted to, Roger didn't, so it didn't happen. After seeing the movie and it's success, Roger regreted not writing a song. They wrote a song, not insync with the last scene (I don't think, but it goes along with it so perfectly that it's creepy). Thus, Echoes. :thumb:
Riva 12-14-2004 05:56 PM

When do you start to play Echoes though?

*is to lazy to look for the answer himself*

guitarded_chuck 12-14-2004 06:04 PM

When the scene "Jupiter and Beyond" starts, just start playing the song. You may not notice much in synch for a little bit, but once the intensity of the scene and the music picks up, it gets pretty crazy.

DeusExMachina 12-14-2004 06:04 PM

Hmm... time for me to get a copy of 2001. I really wanna try this out.

Distant Echoes 12-14-2004 06:08 PM

Sounds pretty interesting to me...ill try it if i have the chance. DSOTM worked well with The wizard of Oz...but id like to see this, even though ive never watched or had a clue what 2001 is about, but its not Floyd couldnt inform me about in a simple song
