There's one in 6 to 8, but it's nothing special. Anyone could play it.

Gnarmageddon 08-20-2005 10:42 PM

I guess the beginning of God Called In Sick Today could be counted as a solo. Jade's the only guitar player, so it makes sense that there aren't many.

El_Shiznit 08-20-2005 10:44 PM

There are some solo's from Mark on early AFI.

Nothing compared to "Dancing Through Sunday" though. I wish I could play that, but I don't think I'll ever be that good.

I still like "6 to 8"'s solo better. For lack of a better term, it sounds more "soulful".

And I wouldn't call GCIST's intro a solo per se.

_ThisSecretNinja_ 08-20-2005 10:47 PM

I like the Dont Make Me Ill solo

Gnarmageddon 08-20-2005 10:52 PM

The intro to Don't Make Me Ill is great. What is that taken from?

cheeser_1 08-20-2005 11:59 PM

let's not forget that wonderful tapping part from the leaving song pt. 2. not a solo, so much as an intro, but he definitely deserves some credit for that one.

RetiredAt21 08-21-2005 01:02 AM

Yeah, the intro to that song is pretty good.

cheeser_1 08-21-2005 02:06 AM

i need to learn how to tap.

That is air guitar material.

It's really easy. Have your finger on the second note in the progression and reach for the third as you smack a finger from your other hand on the first.

Too bad you almost always sound like cheese metal whenever you do it though.

RetiredAt21 08-21-2005 12:36 PM

Tapping is really easy. The first tapping part I ever learned was the intro to Lip Gloss and Black by Atreyu. :(

cheeser_1 08-21-2005 12:41 PM

this is the part where i roll up a newspaper and smack you.

RetiredAt21 08-21-2005 12:48 PM

What the crap? I thought we were buddies? :(

cheeser_1 08-21-2005 02:01 PM

we are buddies. but sometimes you need discipline. and not the bedroom kind either.

I was thinking about AFI last night in the moments trying to get to sleep (my second best thinking place, next to the shower). And I remembered hearing Girls Not Grey when it had first come out as a single in a record store and liking it a bit. So I thought I should check them out more. I never reeally did, I think I got I Want a Mohawk, but had a computer crash and lost all my mp3s (this was before I got a new computer). So I thought about it, and if I had checked them out, I'd probably have the same opinion I have now. And since this was the time I was first getting into punk, if I had gotten into them then, I think I may of gotten into other hardcore easier, because of the similarities, and now I'd probably be able to stand bands like Carry On and Comeback Kid for more than one song every month or so.

RetiredAt21 08-21-2005 02:43 PM

But Cheeser, I'm not a puppy.

cheeser_1 08-21-2005 03:06 PM
But Cheeser, I'm not a puppy.
i don't know that for sure. if a sign-language monkey can us AIM, i'm sure a puppy could post on an internet forum.

Yeah they're old stuff is the definition of "a starter hardcore band".

Brain Toad 08-21-2005 05:26 PM

I'm sure many of you are quite knowledgable of AFI, so I encourage you to submit a Band bio blurb for the Top 100 Punk Bands. If you think you can do a good one, email it to me at braintoad@gmail.com

EDIT: BERSERKER! is doing it...

El_Shiznit would be a good person to do it also.

Brain Toad 08-21-2005 09:58 PM

Berserker! retracted his dibs.. so it's free. I just want someone to do it.

El_Shiznit 08-22-2005 12:05 AM

I might do the blurb if I am bored sometime soon. I don't really want to commit to anything right now. Even if it is one paragraph on a band I know a lot about. I would rather someone else do it, but do the band justice if you do.

Original Gangsta! 08-22-2005 12:08 AM

i think that the last album was pretty boring...

i dont really consider them punk....

Listen to their early stuff, all of it is either hardcore-punk or post-hardcore.

I didn't like Sing the Sorrow, except when I first heard Girl's Not Grey.

cheeser_1 08-22-2005 12:50 AM

yeah, nick's right, and to be honest, it doesn't matter what you think.
yeah, nick's right, and to be honest, it doesn't matter what you think.
lol cause im a dumbass? well then what is this "earlier stuff"

tell me a song name or something...

although im not a big fan of hardcore

agnostic front is about it for me
They were okay/good til they sold out.

And by 'sold out' I mean changed their sound to get on MTV, made music videos, signed a major label for money and raised ticket prices for their shows.
i undertand they changed their music style, but gradually, and the ticket prices may be nitro records doing, remember they put out the retrospect cd without the band knowing, and sum video are from older stuff but believe or not many ppl who watch MTV dont know them,i respecr ue opionion but i think they changed more then soldout,
