Anyone seen Medeski Martin and Wood? I went to a free concert last year in Pittsburgh and I must say it was 2 and half hours of some of the best nonstop free form jazz.
They had a free show in Pittsburgh ? That would've been before I even knew about them anyway. Rusted Root had a free show on New Year's Eve, but I couldn't go :(

pegwedge 03-23-2005 12:15 AM

Yeah it was a great show. I had only listened to them for about 3 months before going and seeing them. It was worth getting stuck in a huge traffic jam right outside of Pittsburgh due to construction. Oh I almost forgot, me and some friends got to meet them. We kind of ambushed them as they walked to their bus about 10 minutes after the concert ended. No one else was around so we got pictures with them, well John Medeski and Chris Wood...which unfortunately I don't have a copy of. They seemed to be pretty cool guys. I got to meet Billy Martin seperately but he seemed kinda tired and pissed. He did just get done playing 2 and a half hours straight though. It was a pretty cool experience in all though. I'll never forget it. :thumb:

I got that e-mail, no festivals :( But I know Pittsburgh has a blues festival and The Edgar Winter Band is gonna be there. Also, Wheeling, WV has a blues festival and The Levon Helm Band is gonna be there. So I might try to go to those.

pegwedge 03-23-2005 09:37 PM

When's the Wheeling festival?

e p 03-23-2005 09:49 PM

I might be going to that festival in Lawrence Kansas, as well as summer camp in Illinois with moe. and Keller (and more)

Yeah, I might go see Victor Wooten in Philadelphia. It should be a good show, Wooten is a nasty bassist.

jpj 03-24-2005 10:33 PM

The Black Crowes are coming here, but I'm gonna be in Orlando :(

Black Crowes > Orlando

Jam2Me 03-25-2005 10:43 AM

I was planning on seeing Addison Groove Project on April 8th...but I have prom that day :\

May will make up for it, Donna the Buffalo then Dark Star Orchestra plays two nights in a row, although I'm only going to one of the shows.

Anyone have any jam band t-shirts?

All I've got is Allman Brothers Band, Phish coventry tie dye, and a Gov't Mule tour shirt.

keep on phishin' 03-25-2005 11:39 AM

I have 2 phish shirts, a grateful dead, and 2 bonnarroo shirts.

Could anyone reccomend me some more material by Jimmy Herring and any of his projects, I just listened to Blue Light Rain and it is amazing how great he is. Any help woudl be appreciated.

Jimmy had Played With
---------------------------
Solo
Phil Lesh & Friends
The Dead
(Col. Bruce Hampton &) The Aquarium Rescue Unit
Frogwings
Project Z
Jazz is Dead
etc

Recommend Albums
------------------------
Phil Lesh & Friends - There & Back Again -Though Warren is the dominant player (not skill wise), I'm never up set with the album because of that. I do not love the album for its technical instrumental work. Everything jells, is upbeat, and massively satisfying.

Project Z - s/t - Here is an album that will show the technical ability that both Jimmy Herring and Jeff Sipe with hold. The album is much different compared to any other project Herring participated in. It is also instrumental.

Jazz is Dead - Laughing Water - My favorite of the two J.I.D. albums I have heard. It usually gets the lowest rating, but I do not see why. It lacks Billy Cobham, but makes up for it with the addition of Jeff Sipe and Rod Morgenstein. This is the album that really got me into Jimmy Herring.

Col. Bruce Hampton & The Aquarium Rescue Unit - Mirrors of Embarrassment - My cousin owns this album and I love it. That groups ability to mix Jazz, Blues, Bluegrass and a variety of other genres is amazing. Col. Bruce leads the album great, and each members' technical ability is fantastic. Oteil Burbridge, Matt Mundy (Amazing), Jeff Sipe, Jimmy Herring, Col. Bruce Hampton; awesome.

I am so glad you are getting into him. I have been trying to show people his skill and the fabulous bands he plays with, but they just ignore him. His only fans I know (Other than you, now) are my guitar teacher and I.

The only jam shirts I have are a moe. shirt and a Grateful Dead shirt. But almost all of my wardrobe is a band shirt. If it's not plain it has some band on it. I am planning on ordering another Dead shirt and a Phish shirt here soon.

Me too. Real bad.

SplitOpenAndMelt 03-27-2005 04:30 PM

I'm goin to Bonnaroo. Hehehe.

I also went to an an Allman Brothers Band concert last Sat. at the Beacon Theater in NY. All I can say is that they melted my face. Incredible.

Is anyone going to either Trey Anastasio concerts in NY?

jpj 03-27-2005 05:12 PM

I want to move to New York so bad, so many concerts.

keep on phishin' 03-27-2005 05:18 PM

I only get about 2 good concerts a year, down here in Tennessee.

keep on phishin' 03-27-2005 05:52 PM

Just ordered a bunch of albums from Amazon:

Jazz Is Dead - Great Sky River
Project Z - Project Z
Phil Lesh and Friends - There and Back Again
Aquarium Rescue Unit - Mirrors of Embarassment
Moe. - Tin Cans and Tire
Medeski Martin and Wood - Friday Afternoon In the Universe
Eric Johnson - Ah Via Musicom

Pretty good figuring the total was only $53. I'm especially excited about hearing those Jimmy Herring albums. :)

SplitOpenAndMelt 03-27-2005 07:07 PM

Aquarium Rescue Unit is a hot band. Enjoy that. The whole list looks pretty good to me.

Yeah NY has a nice music scene...if any of you ever want tapes from NYC shows just holler at me.

keep on phishin' 03-27-2005 08:09 PM

What NYC shows do you have tapes of?

I have the MMW album, that's my favorite stuff by them...Badmoon highly reccomends that Phil one so I'm sure that's really good.

I'm so stoked right now for summer, I found out Lynyrd Skynyrd and Allman Bros. were touring together, I now found out I'm going to two of their shows, one in RI and one in CT...and then between those dates I'm going to see Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers with the Black Crowes which should be unbelievably good. And all that is after Bonnaroo.
Connecticut has been surprising the hell out of me lately, so many great artists are coming here either before or after they all play at New York since its only an hour drive away.

So this Jimmy Herring guy is good, aye? Any reccomendations of a couple songs I can d/l?

SplitOpenAndMelt 03-27-2005 08:41 PM

Any shows from the NY area are fairly accesable to me...One of my good friends is a taper, and goes to NYU, so besides school, live music is his life. He makes it to all the hot shows pretty much. I know for a fact he's got some nice Benevento Russo Duo, MMW, and the whole Allman Bros. Run at the Beacon from this year.

Badmoon 03-27-2005 08:41 PM

If Jerry Garcia hadn't been my favorite guitarist, it would be Jimmy Herring. He is just insane; He's got the technical ability of virtuoso but is a Rock guitarist who plays around with Fusion a lot.

Jazz is Dead - Eyes of the World

^Download if you can. Jimmy's skill is displayed great in that cover.

SplitOpenAndMelt 03-27-2005 08:45 PM

Any of you guys like Keller Williams? He's just freakin' awesome. Not for everyone, but awesome. Check him out. He's also a trip to catch live.

Badmoon 03-27-2005 08:47 PM

Keller Williams completely ripped off Michael Hedges's guitar style. I guess you could just say he was influenced by Hedges, but it still sets him back a bit in my book.
