I want a new book to immerse myself in. I've systematically demolished the list I had. Thinking something future-ish perhaps, lots of detail, etc.

Take a punt at some Frank Herbert, that'll fuck with your head.

Sad But True 01-06-2011 08:16 AM

Excellent suggestion people, I will definitely be grabbing some of these. Already demolished the Dune Trilogy by Herbert, though.

Also, what are some somewhat interesting shops that I could work in? I'm after a new part-time job and was looking at cool stuff like Game, Academy of Sound, etc, but they're all full and stuff.

Squirrel 01-06-2011 09:29 AM

I'd honestly say that if it's a part time thing then whichever shop won't matter too much. Obviously there's a difference in the kind of people that go in so i'd avoid people who are likely to be arsey and not wanting to be kept waiting e.g. Cafe Nero or something.

jaklyons 01-06-2011 09:35 AM

I wish the BMW I'm driving was smaller.

Sad But True 01-06-2011 09:36 AM

Fair point squizz. Ideally I'd like to work in a pub, and I've sent apps/CV's to a few but with 2 bands and 2 sets of practices I'm going to struggle if I'm working evenings all the time.

EDIT: Excellent, dropping a CV off to CEX tomorrow, going for an interview at a pub, and getting my old man to print off like 15 CV's to just hand in to any store at the shopping centre.

Try The Jesus Incident by Frank Herbs as well. Cracking read.

I prefer something with more substance, like, Asda brand 2-ply.

AG 01-06-2011 11:17 AM

ASDA Shades is on offer.

Aidan what's GW like for part time staff? If I've been out the loop for a few years would they get me back up to speed?

JoshIsNumber3 01-06-2011 12:24 PM

read moby dick, the real one, all the way through. i would consider it to be one of the finest examples of classic american literature.
read moby dick, the real one, all the way through. i would consider it to be one of the finest examples of classic american literature.
That's actually a good call. I wanted to do a couple of modules of American lit but they all either filled up instantly or clashed with awesome stuff like creative writing.

JoshIsNumber3 01-06-2011 12:48 PM

What's interesting about Moby Dick is that it actually "feels" like an english novel. That has to do with the fact that many of the pre-modern novels were actually European and the American art form started as an extension of that model and developed an independent identity.

Sad But True 01-06-2011 01:05 PM

Excellent. I've tended to stay away from what are considered 'classics' really (apart from required reading and the odd one here and there). Not sure why, I just always tend to go for newer stuff.

Bruce E Kinesis 01-06-2011 01:09 PM

SBT you read "The Forever War"?

JoshIsNumber3 01-06-2011 01:22 PM

tbh the only things worth reading are the classics

Sad But True 01-06-2011 02:12 PM
SBT you read "The Forever War"?
No, but upon researching it, it sounds rather bloody good. You read it? What would you say it's similar to in terms of style and form etc?
tbh the only things worth reading are the classics
I've read some god-awful (imo) classics.

Cranford? Merciful crap I hate that book.

The Transporter 01-06-2011 02:23 PM

TBH Mark Twain is the ultimate literary badass. All those other writers are terrible by comparison.

Sad But True 01-06-2011 02:33 PM

Apparently there's a version of Tom Sawyer & Huck Finn in the pipeline where '******' is replaced with 'slave'. Discuss.

Harry Potter is a damn good series, this is your problem, not mine, you waste of flesh
read moby dick, the real one, all the way through. i would consider it to be one of the finest examples of classic american literature.
it is the #1 finest example

The original Dune books are all good but stay away from the steaming piles of shit his son put out under the Dune name, fucker went back and changed things that were in the original books.

Dune is mint. But yes, original trilogy only pls.

JoshIsNumber3 01-06-2011 04:21 PM

lmao how long it took me to read Dune

also Catch-22 is great, if tedious. It's a great technical example of how difficult the english language can be.

Agreed on both counts. I've got Dune in a massive 3 in 1 book, and because it was all just one book, I always just ploughed through from one 'book' to the next, so I ended up restarting every time I took a break from it because I forgot what the hell was going on.

Love Catch 22 as well. I'd read it again if my drummer hadn't lost my copy of it. It confused the balls out of me first time through, but after a while (and some more education) I read it again and really enjoyed it.
Aidan what's GW like for part time staff? If I've been out the loop for a few years would they get me back up to speed?
Pop a CV in every now and again - it depends on the store and how much labour allowance it gets.
No, but upon researching it, it sounds rather bloody good. You read it? What would you say it's similar to in terms of style and form etc?
The writing is nothing terribly unique; it's just well written scifi. The idea, however; and the extension of the consequences of that idea; are what make it well worth reading.

Tedious? The only reason I had trouble getting through it is because it is so bleak. Really one of my favourite books of all time but damn, I don't think I'd have the emotional strength to read it again at the moment
