This. They were Anglo-Saxons, from a place we now call Germany (amongst other northern European areas such as Denmark and northern France). English isn't a language derived from German, it shares a common ancestor, as it were, with German.

Also, there weren't just three tribes, there were hundred of smaller tribes, many with their own particular dialects.
