My brother is a cop in LA. When I go out to visit I will ride along with him on the graveyard shift.....11 to 7 am. LASD has Crown Vics. They have 400 CI supercharged motors, super heavy duty trans, HUGE four wheel disc, soft compound tires that last about 20K.....those cars scream. 0 to 60 in about 5.5 seconds......greatly beefed up suspension, front and rear sway bars. They just do drifting at three in the morning around corners when it is slow....great times.

fishbulb 02-26-2008 05:06 PM

Can't those Crown Victoria's drive up curbs no problem at 40 MPH +?

Mr Pink 02-26-2008 05:15 PM

I dont know about that....maybe. They are built like tanks. When you close the door, its like closing the door on a walk in freezer. The tires are runflats, maybe the rims are ubber llama as well.

The only way to get one is to buy a retired police vehicle. They have about 150K or more when they are put out to pasture, but since they are so heavy duty, if maintained, they cold last an additional 70K. Friend a while back bought a Caprice Classic that was an under cover Dick car.....it is a rock and going strong at over 220K

Police interceptors aren't really that special actually- their engines actually are pretty weak , 4.7l 250 hp 265 lbs of torque I think (out of a v8,). The main upgrades are just the heavier duty suspension and transmission, and better brakes and tires. That, and better electronics so they can support the sirens, radio, etc.

Now now the chargers are a bit better, 0-60 in six seconds, but still nothing extraordinary. Still a 4200 lb beast, so the V8 doesn't do them as much as good as would a lighter car.

Cops cars aren't nearly as special as you might think, and they're very easy to spot as well. They look different then most other cars on the road, and cops also tend to drive very aggressively, which is easy to see. If you see a blandly colored car flying up to you...and it has squareish/ diagonal headlights...it's probably a cop.

Still be cool to own one lol. Just more for laughs than anythin

TTTSNB 02-26-2008 05:32 PM

Yeah, haha, it would be funny. I dunno if an american one would work very well in Britain though, it'd probably be too big for half of your parking garages, haha.

Depends on the department. FORD offers a cruiser/interceptor that the sell to Montana, wyoming, and other big sky states that are 450hp. Just depends on what department is buying and what it will be used for. Don't always need the hp in the city, but HP rules the highway.

TTTSNB 02-26-2008 05:32 PM

I really don't think so man. They used to offer the Mustang, which was fairly powerful (I think 300 hp), and Camaros at one point. Not anymore though.

My bro is on the board that decides motor pool issues for LASD. They all wish Chevy would make the Caprice again. Better than the Fords. FORD will build you ANYTHING, you just have to pay for it.

Janeway 02-26-2008 05:37 PM

Lulz. The only cop cars we've got are huge Ford Explorers, painted navy blue.

I never see them in the crown vics.

ace76543 02-26-2008 05:39 PM

I hate people who think that Joey Jordison is better than Danny Carey because he can go faster.

Well I'm sure Ford could build it, after all they have built a lot of powerful cars in the past, I just doubt that a whole fleet of interceptors, or even a few pursuit cars. It'd just be too expensive to maintain and buy- maybe as a show car.

In Los Angeles, each station has a "super" car, or try to. It is usually either the watch commanders car, or the "rovers" car..he is like a floater that responds to the different beats as needed or the guy who gets called upon for back up when no other unit are available.

Fair enough, that definitely makes sense- as most police cars would have a pretty hard time catching a determined criminal with a fast car. Just couldn't imagine a car like that lasting through the stresses of normal beat work.
