Thanks :)

As a Kanji Beginner it is pretty hard to read but after a while it's pretty hard without Kanji - i had a hard time reading your sentence ;)
You wrote "くるま", in Kanji it would just be 車 or 自動車(jidousha) - which makes it easier to understand and determine it's word class.

と いいました is past tense, と いいます - と いう (dict.) と 言う (Kanji)
It is used for direct and reported speech, It's: "You have said..." and then ijust quoted you sentence in the brackets.

辞書 jisho - dictionary
意味 imi - meaning
思う - omou - to think/believe
上手 - jouzu

うちからだいがくまであるいて15じゅっぷんにかかりますから、くるまでいきません。でも、さむいだたら、
でんしゃでいきます。
うちからだいがくまでなんじかんぐらいかかりますか。

All I see are square boxes. Install windows language packs?

It did promt me but I never have done.

the_pure_drummer 01-09-2007 10:34 AM

I see lots and lots of question marks!

Kosmos Tree 01-09-2007 10:43 AM
I'd like to learn more, that's why I'm taking classes. I'd also like to be able to practice. My one friend who was taking the class with me is a numbskull and can't remember **** about languages so I usually have no one to practice with.

So if you've got questions, ask here, I've got a bit of knowledge and Kosmo is also apparently got experience with the language.
It's essential for the language to continually practise it, or you will forget more than you learn (esp. Kanji and Vocabulary) simply because you don't have to use it and probably can use it just on rare occasions.

I study Japanese, but i had a break from it - and now i'm catching up again. Ii'm not very good with conversations (because all we do in our classes is reading and translating) but i have a tandem partner now and it'll hopefully improve. If you have questions - i'll answer them to the best of my abilities - it's a good practise for me too.

trysthedrummer 01-09-2007 11:03 AM

Yeah I was right. I never installed any language packs when I formatted n re-installed windows so it sqaure boxes Im afraid for now

they do look quite nice

just so you know.. you don't need the disc. The language packs are readily available on the internet. I lost my disc a long time ago, but when I started learning Japanese, I searched Microsoft's site and found downloadable language packs.

God..I feel stupid.I've picked up like, a line and some words in Japanese from watching some sub anime, thats it, though..Hajimemashite is something along the lines of "Hello, nice to meet you" right?

Kage is shadow?
Hoshi=star
Bunshin=clone

Also, thanks for explaining "no" to me. I had no clue to it's meaning.

Retarded Chipple 01-09-2007 12:23 PM

Kainen 01-09-2007 12:41 PM

i must learn japanese. For I wish to visit japan in a year or so.

moogoogaipan 01-09-2007 12:45 PM

well, good luck. You better get on it.
It'll probably take you that long to just get down the basics.

Kainen 01-09-2007 12:46 PM

yeah i probably won't learn, most japanese people speak enough english.

moshpitdrummer 01-09-2007 12:50 PM
Question: Who is everyones idols in life?
Frank Zappa

probly my fav musician. some suggested listening by him is zoot allures, watermelon in easter hay (crazy time sigs and changes), andy (listen to ruth underwood on the marimba at the beginning), purple haze (its a remix of hendrix's version... i suggest listening to hendrix's first, then this... its out there!) , and cheepnis.

moogoogaipan 01-09-2007 12:51 PM

I wouldn't make that assumption. From knowing a lot of Japanese people, most people in Japan learn English to get through school and then don't remember jack about it.

Any average person in Japan who can speak English will have a very little vocabulary and even littler understanding of what you are saying.

Plus, it's kind of rude to go into a foreign country and expect people to pander to you. You're in their country, speak their language.

trysthedrummer 01-09-2007 12:56 PM

True. When my brother went to Hong Kong he said he felt bad because he never knew a word they were on about. He said he would have loved to have spoke a bit here and there.

But then again, someday I will want to go over there, but Im not going to learn different languages just because Im visiting their country.

Win A Rabbit 01-09-2007 01:04 PM

So we're supposed to be getting a huge blizzard today and tomorrow. I just heard on the news they're expecting 15-20 cm of snow today, and then way way more tomorrow. Should be fun. I love snow.

well, That seems rather lame.
I mean, I know some people can't afford the time to learn, but what's the point of going to another country to just visit and not immerse yourself.

You have to be able to speak with locals and take in the surroundings, so if you go sight-seeing you aren't like... well, what the hell's with this temple and the only other guy you are traveling with is like... pff.. hell if I know. Let's ask somone....wait... we can't.

trysthedrummer 01-09-2007 01:06 PM

Yeah good point

So, Juu is ten, Taj[y?]uu (No idea if that's how it is..can't remember...) would be?

oliv_da_skinmasher 01-09-2007 01:11 PM

I never completely learn a language. I learn a few handy phrases, you know the basics. Then you pick up more while there

moogoogaipan 01-09-2007 01:13 PM
So, Juu is ten, Taj[y?]uu (No idea if that's how it is..can't remember...) would be?
I have no idea, what did you just spell?
Exactly...thats why I'm so in there with all those Asian chicks! :naughty:
You only wish that.
You gotta speak their language first... I've got a running head start on you:)
