theres two different things, both run on bateries.
active pups - the pickups are actually powered by the battery

active on-board preamp - still battery powered, but like the preamp section on your amp. pups are still passive

both run on batterys, but active pickups (as my understanding of it goes) have less wire wrapped around the magnent thus causeing them to be quiter so a pre amp is built into the pickup to make them louder. and a active eq is a pre amp that is built into the eq making it more versitile and also (i think) louder. it says on the ibanez site that its active eq.

this is just what i have heard. back in the day (way before i was here) there was a huge battle between Tab Crawler forum and this one. this caused multiple bannings and "tc" was out made to be stared out.
