Anybody hear of a band called Vanden Plas?

They have a lot of DT style elements in their music, and they are awesome, too.:thumb:

Darkness 06-19-2006 08:16 PM

Much like the music of the legends in discussion.
Hence why its a better name.

pep 06-20-2006 03:39 PM

So why was the old title changed?

Me too, the old title was cool

nowitzki 06-20-2006 04:38 PM

Hmm.. its simple, yet effective. Who's idea was it to change it?

NymphetamineX 06-20-2006 07:03 PM

Alright, for anyone just getting into Dream Theater, what would be the one album to go check out and get aquainted with the band with? I've mostly heard the album Octavarium talked about by my friends, but I just wanna know before I buy anything.

For the classic Dream Theater: Images and Words
For the Best Dream Theater: Metropolis pt II: Scenes from a Memory
For the Heavy Dream Theater: Train of Thought

I think those three sum all the DT style.

pye phyo ko 06-20-2006 07:27 PM

nymph! i highly recommand buying octarvarium. it's really worth your money!!

Most people tend to like Scenes From A Memory the most. I personally love Train Of Thought though...

ghettoeddo 06-20-2006 08:27 PM

I'd say either

1.Images and Words
2.Scenes from a memory
3.Awake

August 29

Moses 06-21-2006 12:05 AM

I like having the title as just Dream Theater.

BludgeonySteve 06-21-2006 12:05 AM

Yep yep. Everything else is too commercial and lacks soul.

Actually Scenes is very commercial but it's still excellent.

ghettoeddo 06-21-2006 12:54 AM

every DT album has soul
/fanboyism

no but you can find soul in any piece of music i believe.

Jev 06-21-2006 01:33 AM

Maybe I could see where you're coming from for ToT but the rest really do have soul.

ghettoeddo 06-21-2006 01:37 AM

in the name of god? oh wow. vacant for sure. soulsoulsoul.
i was listening to disappear in the car today after my internship...and it bruoght me to tears adn i couldn't see where i was driving and i uh...
hit the median :\

:upset:

Jev 06-21-2006 01:41 AM

Maybe you should stop playing sad DT songs whilst you drive.
Well, I see what you mean and I guess you're right. Vacant and In The Name of God definitely do have soul.

ghettoeddo 06-21-2006 01:45 AM

i still need to pick up the LSFNY CD set.

i cant stop it. it's like a drug...i just love that feeling of just driving along w/ beautiful melodies resonating from my car. egad.

Dissapear is so goddamned beautiful, does anyone else reckon that it is slightly reminiscant of 'hurt' by NIN?

Hmm, I never really thought about that before, but I can see where you're coming from. I guess it does.
Hmm, I never really thought about that before, but I can see where you're coming from. I guess it does.
The opening of it just seems similar, i think its something to do with the effect. and then torwards the middle when the clean kind of acousticy sound comes in...its also quite like the chorus of hurt.
The similarity is less so on the Budokan dvd though, as petrucci plays the opening as opposed to rudess which doesn't really sound as good.

Jev 06-21-2006 04:24 AM
Hmm, I never really thought about that before, but I can see where you're coming from. I guess it does.
Yeah, same here.

I think it's more sad (sadder?) than hurt though.

inassociationwithdeanlearner 06-21-2006 04:33 AM
Yeah, same here.

Sadder was right.

Yeah i think you're right about that, the vocal melodies in it are just brilliant e.g the line 'so i'm moving on.....'

Although i dont think its really fair to compare reznor and labrie

Mr_Bounce 06-21-2006 04:36 AM

Disappear is just amazing.. the first 4 minutes are almost 'dull', but when you get the climax you realise how important that progressive build up was... The absolute peak at 4:52 is like.. an orgasm? :D
Nah, but seriously though, the first time I heard this song I thought 'wow', that was beautiful.

Yeah, i reckon that the first disk of SDOIT gets kind of overlooked too often.
I know i often tend to overlook it and move onto the second, but recently i've been overplaying the second so i went back to the first and it just reminded me of how goddamn amazing it is. All of the tracks on their are just completely ace , My favourite has to be blind faith.

I also like the way that the last third of 'misunderstood' sounds almost like 'under the milky way tonight' with that weird pizzicato style bit on the keyboard.

Yeah, same here. I was completely wowed by it and listened to it about 5 more times.

Listening through headphones = /cream

Mr_Bounce 06-21-2006 05:31 AM

Through my sennheisers, it's like a wall of ambience then it explodes around your head :D

inassociationwithdeanlearner 06-21-2006 05:46 AM

I have two massive pairs, some phillips ones i robbed on my last day of school and some huge sony ones that my mums ex lent me then never asked for them back...Dream Theater sound awesome on both.

The drumming on 'lines in the sand' sounds so beautiful through my phillips ones

Chu 06-21-2006 06:58 AM

Cool, another Dream Theater fan on MX from Canberra :thumb:

Headphones are good. You hear things you normally miss.

Plus it's all I can use since my speakers aren't wired up.

If your speakers arent wired up, where do you plug the headphones in? Back of your computer?

Yeah, this is a very good effect. The Birdsong at the start is wonderful.

This dying soul has soul indeed, and not just in the title.
