Apparently, some studies seem to show that at least some types of fish can experience pain because they have cutaneous nerve endings.
In a 2009 paper, Janicke Nordgreen from the Norwegian School of Veterinary Science, Joseph Garner from Purdue University, and others, published research which concluded that goldfish do feel pain, and that their reactions to pain are much like those of humans.[20] "There has been an effort by some to argue that a fish's response to a noxious stimulus is merely a reflexive action, but that it didn't really feel pain," Garner said. "We wanted to see if fish responded to potentially painful stimuli in a reflexive way or a more clever way."[21] The fish were divided into two groups, one given morphine and the other saline. They were then subjected to unpleasant temperatures. The fish that were given saline subsequently acted with defensive behaviours, indicating anxiety, wariness and fear, whereas those given morphine did not.[21] Nordgreen said that the behavioural differences they found showed that fish feel both reflexive and cognitive pain. "The experiment shows that fish do not only respond to painful stimuli with reflexes, but change their behavior also after the event," Nordgreen said. "Together with what we know from experiments carried out by other groups, this indicates that the fish consciously perceive the test situation as painful and switch to behaviors indicative of having been through an aversive experience."[21]
zinc 11-22-2011 06:14 PM

why would you care if fish feel pain or not

Morumbar 11-22-2011 06:19 PM

Well that depends on what kind of person you are, I guess. I don't like to see or think of others needlessly suffering.

Haz 11-22-2011 06:20 PM

i like to think of humans in pain sometimes

shortz 11-22-2011 06:21 PM

Pain for pleasure?

And Morumbar's a stand up guy, I like him.

zinc 11-22-2011 06:24 PM

well i mean the fish is dying whether it feels pain or not, either way its suffering for a split second then its dead

Haz 11-22-2011 06:24 PM
well i mean the fish is dying whether it feels pain or not, either way its suffering for a split second then its dead
I think they were talking about a slower death, though. Besides, if people don't fish for fun, fish don't have to die for fun. If you fish for food, that's a different thing altogether.

@ Haz: I figured as much, but I didn't want to presume too much, lol.

@ Sam: we're all just a bunch of blind animals trying to get through this life, dude. No one chose to be born as anything.

zinc 11-22-2011 06:32 PM

i just dont see how whether a fish feels pain or not would change how you feel about fishing for fun

zinc 11-22-2011 06:33 PM

like no ones going to stop fishing because of some study stating fish can feel pain

Haz 11-22-2011 06:37 PM

I hold no ill will towards other human beings to the point I want to see them suffer, even the ones I intensely disagree with

but yes people who are thoughtless towards animals bother me, i've always grown up with a conscience when other kids would torture birds and stuff

xMalcolmXx 11-22-2011 06:38 PM

fishing is fun, i tend to eat the fish i catch if they taste good

pickeral taste like shit, are covered in slime, aren't natural in the water i was fishing and are predators to the natural fish i was targeting. so i banged them shits with a spiked fuckin bat BLAOW

Morumbar 11-22-2011 06:51 PM

Eh, I'll enjoy the outdoors without a rod.

I should be off, got just a few hours left to get some sleep before I have to get up. Cheers.
