Okay I seriously want some feedback over this, I lost sleep typing it. If I get nothing I packing my stuff, changing my avatar, and going to the Dream Theater or Porcupine Tree thread(love both those bands too y'know) They can have my .33 posts a day!:p

Hive 10-20-2005 12:41 AM

hey dont leave. Great 84th post. I'm still takin it all in.

Hive 10-20-2005 12:47 AM

another quote:

Jackie: "Are you guys Morbid Angel fans?"
Both: "huge"
Jackie: "Now you guys sing about death and disease and stuff and you are real nice guys, Morbid Angel guys...scary"
Mikael: "Really? I'm not scared of them."
Jackie: "They are scary"
Mikael: "Actually we met them in 1996 and they were quite nice."
Jackie: "Well maybe they just dont like girls or something"
all laugh

Two weeks until the NYC show!

I'm psyched. :D
Godhead's lament has the most beautiful acoustic part in it. I know this has been said here a lot, but that part is worth another mention. Although the Moor's acoustic part is close behind, if not even as beautiful as GL.
Godhead's lament?
The chorus is uninspiring for me.

And as for acoustic sections i'll take 6.09 into 'When' any day over it.

lost_profits 10-20-2005 03:03 AM
I like the Funeral Portrait. But you're right, Dirge for November drags a lot. The acoustic stuff at the beginning is really nice though.
I will say that Still Life GREATLY benefits as a concept album. Yeah that first acoustic fingerpicking part in "Dirge" is one of their finest acoustic moments.

Yeah, as an album as a whole, it really helps.

ElectricalStorm, good stuff.

Bicuspid 10-20-2005 07:14 AM

I think the intro to When is the best acoustic part they have ever done. Fun as hell to play too.

Amazing job, dude, keep at it. Your interpretation is beautiful, and I know have a greater appreciation for the song. I'd like to discuss some of the things I really found to be thought-provoking, but I'm pressed for time right now.

JamJar 10-20-2005 10:31 AM

i just got MAYH, the other day, I'm still getting into it but I think I'm going to love it. Demon Of The Fall is such an amazing song and I love the ending of it so much. Which one should I get next? (I have SL and BWP aswell)

Drone 10-20-2005 10:52 AM

Get Morningrise! It is essential to the Opeth listener in my opinion.

Det_Nosnip 10-20-2005 11:10 AM

If you want something different, go for Dam nation. :)

Hive 10-20-2005 11:22 AM

Still Life is still my favourite. BWP is up there.

The Brad 10-20-2005 11:39 AM

That interview last night was crap. 2 hours of pseudo-metal and an insane amount of commercials just to hear Mikael and Peter talk for maybe fifteen minutes and they gave Ghost of Perdition a fade out after like 5 minutes? So lame. They did it while they were in the studio too, that had to be so insulting. Then the way Jackie was pronouncing it just got annoying: Opith, Opith, Oputh, O-peth. Then she's saying she's a huge fan and she doesn't even know about Lamentations? Seriously got trapped in her own lies, another Juliya-esque faux metal chick. Just get someone in there who actually enjoys the music regardless of radio personality, seeing as how not much is needed other than saying the station's name everytime they go to or return from a commercial break.

Reywas 10-20-2005 11:46 AM

Can you guys suggest me some Opeth songs? It's really hard for me to get into them because I feel most of their songs are overshadowed by Bleak and Black Rose Immortal.I'm sure they have more fine songs.

It actually is pronounced Opith, my one friend met them after a show and asked Akerfeldt, but yes, not knowing Lamentations = hilarious.

Hmm..I did not know that. Damn, I hate words that aren't pronounced the way they're spelt.

Did you listen to the interview? She just went on this little rant on how she didn't know how to say the name and spent like a minute saying it different ways and then everytime after that when she said the band's name she would say it like three times because they were laughing at her for the way she pronounced it. It was just kind of odd, bad interview in my opinion. She didn't even really ask any interesting questions. Jackie lacks gravitas.

I find your friends anecdote a little weird too because during the interview Mikael said it was a fictious name and they didn't even truly know how to pronounce it so you can say it anyway you wish. I know it's based off the city of the moon (Opet) and all that, I just figured after 13 years they would have a preference. Perhaps they don't even care anymore. :p

Owned Trevor, owned.

I always had trouble with Akerfeldt's name, I always said ack-er-felt, but it's actually oak-er-felt.

Suck my balls, Matt. Suck my balls.

And listen to "Demon of The Fall" (keeps it relevant)

Isn't it just OH peh th? I've also heard oh PETH. Never Oh pith, though.

Shadows 10-20-2005 01:38 PM

Somehow I really doubt it's pronounced "Opith".

Jude 10-20-2005 02:37 PM
Isn't it just OH peh th? I've also heard oh PETH. Never Oh pith, though.
I've never heard any of the band members say it, but I've heard Steven Wilson mention it in plenty of interviews and he knows and works with the band a lot, and he says it that way. So I think that's a safe guess.

Darkness 10-20-2005 04:08 PM

Its O PETH guys, come on, watch any live show of the band and Mikeal says "We are OPETH...", not Opith. At an Audioslave gig a few weeks ago, me and my bassist were walking through one of the hallways, him wearing his Opeth shirt, and some girls like "DUDE OPITH ROCKS!!" and he almost turned around to scream at her.. I had to convince him not to. :p

matt4 10-20-2005 04:47 PM

First of all, to ElectricalStorm: AWESOME interpretation dude. I'd love for you to post an interpretation of the whole MAYH album because I just plain don't get it. I mean, the basics are obvious: a man dies and has to watch his lover forget him. But what the heck is the Demon of the Fall? What's it got to do with anything? Who is running away? The lover? Why? I just plain don't get it. I have my own ideas, but I'm sure they're pretty off. ElectricalStorm or anyone else, wtf is up with this story? :)

Anyhoo, it's most definitely pronounced "O-pEth" like in the word "pet". Just watch Lamentations! That's how he said it at sounds of the underground, too.

And I am glad to hear that Opeth didn't like the bands on SotU, because when they were in Atlanta, Mikael stood on stage and smilled and sorta bobbed to Clutch: the absolute worst band ever! Towards the end, Mikael was obviously getting bored. He had a beer in his hand, so maybe he was a little tipsy. Just glad to know they didn't HONESTLY like Clutch. LoG was cool. And the only band Lamb of God mentioned was Opeth. Everyone in Atlanta was absolutely floored when Opeth played. They had never heard of them, but Opeth was the reason I was even THERE!!!!! Holy jeeze, I can't wait 'till Nov. 8! Opeth in all their glory! No 30 min sets there! :)

On a side note: I'm really thinking of getting a CD sized Opeth "O" tattood on my back. It'll be my first (and only) tattoo. Thoughts, everyone?

Shadows 10-20-2005 04:50 PM

If it's the intricate Opeth signature "O", go for it. I love the way it looks. :)
