kanks thanks thanks kanks i.e. obnoxious internet slang
I see. NP: Space Dye Vest |
Imagine yourself at a Dream Theater concert. They just got through playing the encore of PMU or Metropolis or whatever they play for encore. The lights dim and go to black and the stage is shrouded in darkness. Everyone accepts with resignation that this magical experience is over and some start filtering out while some stay around and chat excitedly about how awesome the concert was.
Suddenly, stray yet melodic piano chords and keys start playing. This keeps up for about 30 seconds while everyone looks around in wonder and stares at the stage wondering what is going on. Then, the opening piano riff from Space-Dye Vest starts playing as a single spotlight illuminates Kevin Moore on a keyboard. The Dream Theater vets that know the significance of this go fucking nuts. Slowly, individual spotlights shine through the darkness as each members comes in: Portnoy on drums, then LaBrie singing, and sporadically Petrucci and Myung in their random parts of the song. These are the things I think about while in the shower. Sigh....
Damn! I don't keep track of this thread, so I just clicked it, read that, and thought it was a recent gig or something! |
Yeah...just something I was imagining while in the shower...
Heres a little DT story that was pretty funny...
Over the summer of 2005, when DT was on Gigantour. It was their Cleveland show, at Tower City Music hall. As most of you probably know that went to Gigantour, we had to sit through a few terrible bands, like that Dillinger Escape Plan and Bobaflex? Whoever they were, Symphony X, Fear Factory, Nevermore... everything was good for them, and then the long awaited Dream Theater came on. James hasn't even began to sing yet, he's just screaming, you know.. trying to get the crowd pumped. And then he rips this huge hole in the *** of his pants. Turns around and bends over to show the crow his ***. Everyone cheered of course, so they went on and played the song.. him showing his *** every now and again... I really should have gotten out my camera phone. I'm sorry that I didn't now :( That was just a funny story... how many of you have seen James' ***? haha
Ha ha. The only bands I would've liked on Gigantour were Dream Theater, Symphony X and some of Megadeth. |
i think kevin moore should just do all of us a huge favor, and play for the april 1st show...that's ALL we ask for. one live copy of SDV.
NP: misunderstood i love how it starts off "peacefully" and melodically, then it jumps into a loud, heavy chorus and then there's that crazy random scary noise/feedback section towards that end. so many different moods encompassed into 1 song. even within dream theater, how many songs do that? |

You poor bugger  I love misunderstood, it's in my top 5 DT songs. |

Kevin leaving was a big bummer and a big mistake. Looking back, SDV is like the first O.S.I. song. |

SDV comes a close second to Lie. Lie just magically grew on me and I love it. |
Lie is great.
It's a heavier sort of song which I really like. |
please dont hurt me but i always skip SDV when listening to awake ( so turn cd off after Scarred). I can see why you think its a good song but i just dont really like it. I think its good musically but it just bores me.

Hmm, I can see why you think that but I love it. The whole song is so emotional. The way James sings it is perfect. The only way that they could have made it better would be by leaving the guitar, drums and bass out of it. |
Its not really a DT song at all, its completely Kevin Moore. I love it, but its nothing like your usual DT so its not surprising some people won't think much of it.
|
actually i kind of unknowingly lied. When listening to Dream Theater on computer or mp3 i never select SDV to play, but when listening to the CD i usually leave it on, SDV kind of finishes off the album. I do sometimes like it when in the right mood. But still i wouldnt really want them to play it live if i went.
EDIT:
Its not really a DT song at all, its completely Kevin Moore. I love it, but its nothing like your usual DT so its not surprising some people won't think much of it.
Yeah that makes sense, although i love Kevin Moores song writing. |
I personally prefer JP's lyrics and music over the other band members.
|
yeah, well lyric wise his ealier stuff isnt so good, but his newer songs are cool. and music wise i love it. i dont really like JL's lyrics. MP's are ok but rhyming Open with Open in TGP wasnt very inventive. JM's are pretty good actually (ToT) but he doesnt do many. KMs were also good. i wonder what JR's would be like.
|
I don't like MP's they're a bit too childish and angsty if you know what I mean. But he can write brilliant stuff like ACOS and Octavarium.
|
Unless the awesomeness of Kevin Moore exploded all the cameras.
I like Moore doing Chroma Key better anyway. I saw Dream Theater with Fates Warning in Seattle for the Awake tour. IMHO, that was their last good album. The show was awesome, but again... Moore is off to better things. |

yeah i do "well im really sorry but i dont give a sh*t" that kind of thing |
Yeah and the lyrics to Honor Thy Father were a bit immature.
|
Indeed
I generally like the lyrics to TGP, TDS and TROAE though. Like where they have the dual thingy going on: "Cry, desperate..." and all those. |
Now I love FII I have come to the decision that my favourite live DT album is 5YIALT. Loads of I&W, Awake, FII and ACOS. IMO it's a really good selection of songs on the album. After that its probably Live Scenes, Marquee, Budokan.
Sorry. I gave Masturbation up for lent. It's just getting to me.
I could not do that nor would I want to do that. Space Dye Vest would be amazing. Especially when you are 7 rows from the stage; like me :) |

I haven't heard any of his Chroma Key stuff. I've only heard O.S.I., which is amazing. And I have to respectfully disagree with you regarding Awake being their last good album, as they have SFAM and 6DOIT which are classics. |
Yeah, everything since then is excellent.
6DOIT, TOT, SFAM are all absolute classics, and 8VM and FII are mostly excellent. |
