Atleast someone has respect for opinions. :)

Well I say that for songs like Two Suns In The Sunset.

"The sun is in the east
Even though the day is done
Two suns in the sunset"

The song is about the atom bombs on Japan.

Maybe I like it so much because the lyrics connect with a lot of WW2, which Waters' father did die in.
That's how I connect with ABITW Part 1.

The lyrics in that song are so powerful, and the endless ocean of delay is so mysteriously haunting.

"Daddy flew, across the ocean"

"Leaving just, a memory"

Lunch 08-31-2005 08:19 PM

ABitW parts 1 and 3 > part 2.

YouGottaBeCrazy 08-31-2005 08:40 PM
ABitW parts 1 and 3 > part 2.
True.

robo2448 08-31-2005 08:42 PM
ABitW parts 1 and 3 > part 2.
Lyrically, I'd have to agree. Musically, I've got to go with Part 2, even if it is a n00b song.

I think I have finally made my list of my Top 10 Favorite Floyd songs of all time. (Out of Meddle, DSotM, WYWH, Animals, and The Wall) I'll say a bit about why after each song.

10) Sheep
This is my favorite song off Animals, barely beating Dogs. I think what I like about it is Gilmour's awesome guitar riffs, Wright's great effects and keyboard, and Roger's great bassline and vocals. But easily the best part of it is the epic outro riff by Gilmour. It's just insane... Gilmour will always be my favorite guitarist :)

9) Fearless
Pretty much just a really great song. A beautiful, light guitar tone, an uplifting bridge riff, fun imaginative lyrics by Gilmour, generally just an awesome song. Great to listen to when you're feeling down :)

8) Astronomy Domine
Yeah, it's not on the albums I listed above. I've never actually heard the entirety of PATGOD, just this song. It's just a really groovy, trippy song, with off-center lyrics in Syd's affable English monotone. Just a cool song :)

7) One of These Days
One of the most rocking songs I've ever heard in my life. Starts out with a heavy bass note echoed over and over, then joined by another bass, with some well timed effects, up to the drum-guitar break-in, with some great slide guitar by Gilmour. And a huge rise up to the infamous Mason lyric "One of these days/I'm gonna cut you into little pieces", then bursting into an all-out fast jam, with Gilmour and Wright leading with great playing by both. Just a rockin' song :)

6) Nobody Home
This may seem kind of an oddball pick, but it's definitely one of my favorite songs off The Wall. It's just so simplistic; great bluesy lyrics, great piano, great everything... it's one of the only songs of The Wall that doesn't have a million effects on it, but still stands out in my mind very well. When I used to sit in my bed at night and listen to The Wall, this song would just give me goosebumps from its greatness. Definitely one of the most underappreciated Floyd songs.

5) Echoes
This song had grown on me a whole lot. When I first downloaded it, I never really listened to it, and I never did until I bought Meddle. It struck me as a good song, but not one of the best. But as I listened more and more, I really started to appreciate it more. It's a song you just can't describe I guess... it's just... good :)

4) Wish You Were Here
Who doesn't like this song? One thing about music is that often when you hear a song, it reminds you of something... or someone... this song definitely reminds me of my old science teacher. he was a Floyd fan too, but we never really talked about them at all... I knew this was one of his favorite songs by them, and I think of him everytime I hear it. It's just such a beautiful song anyway... brings many emotions to you... one of Floyd's best, easily :)

3) Time
This is mostly because it is my dad's favorite Floyd song. It was at his house one fateful weekend when I first heard "Dark Side of the Moon", on vinyl, the same vinyl my dad and his buddies in college wore to the nub by playing so much. I say it's a fateful weekend because A) I pretty much discovered Pink Floyd and B) because it was when my dad told me he was getting remarried. I met the woman he was marrying two weeks before they married, and she lived 2 1/2 hours away. We listened to DSotM on tape on the way down and on the way back. It's just a memory that sticks so much in your mind...

2) Brain Damage
This is my 2nd favorite Floyd song, by a very close margin, for a few reasons. It was literally the first Floyd song I'd ever heard. It was the first song I ever learned on my guitar. It was the song during which my dad told me he was getting remarried. Of course the song itself is great, but its position on my list is partly because of its meaning in my own life. But that's what music is about, isn't it :)

and.... my favorite Floyd song ever...

1) Shine on You Crazy Diamond
Where do I start with this song... I guess I'll start when I first heard it, on my class trip last year to the mountains of North Carolina. I bought WYWH while I was down there, and listened to it when we walked back from the mall to our hotel room. I remember just listening to it and being completely amazed by it, and the entire album. But I think the main reason that this song is my favorite is that it has the strongest tie to imagery in my mind than any other song... Whenever I hear this song, I think vividly of riding the old train through the mountains, stopping in Bryson City, one of my favorite places ever. I remember staying up 'till 2:30 in the morning playing poker with my closest friends. And, most of all, I remember the breath-taking beauty of the Appalachian Mountains, and whenever I hear this song, I feel like I'm there again... I guess it's good that I have such a good memory tied to such a good song :)

Well, that was my list. I don't really care what you say, comment if you want, whatever.

PinkFloyd 08-31-2005 08:57 PM

I love The Final Cut.

MBS 08-31-2005 09:05 PM

I forgot how much of a masterpiece The Wall was, the theme of depression and insanity always kind of turned me off from it, but musically it's genius.

Roger's verse in Hey You is absolute perfect, because in the story, Pink just realized his wall was too high and just Roger's voice matches the perfect tone of desperation.

It's great.

NP: Is There Anybody Out There?

marmalade_skies 08-31-2005 09:50 PM

What does NP stand for?

Everyone keeps putting "NP:" and then a Floyd song after it. Can somebody help me out?

It means now playing.

magicbus 08-31-2005 09:57 PM

It means "Now Playing". For instance:

np: A new Floyd bootleg I just downloaded thanks to WelcomeToTheMachine's link above.

I listened to 3 Floyd bootlegs last night

/hooked on bootlegs.

Yeah, but I prefer Dogs and the bookends Pigs On The Wing 1 & 2 over the other two. It's an all round brilliant album though. Glad you liked it.

Rothmans 08-31-2005 11:43 PM

I know this is probably over talked but does anyone remember the first time they heard pink floyd?

I remember a friend gave me DSOTM and I remember saying "is this ever gonna fucking start?

Then I hestitantly downloaded The Wall and when teh first riff came in to In The Flesh? I knew I fell in love.

Dragon_Prince 09-01-2005 03:18 AM

Someone let me hear WYWH the song, I liked it, 2 years later someone always talk 'bout Floyd so I listened to DSOTM and I thought it sucked, but a few months later I loved it

Hey, another Nobody Home fan! I really love the song, and I didn't know anyone else did. Nice write up on the songs. The part when Waters sings: "...and I've got a strong erge to fly/but I've got nowhere to fly to...fly to...fly to." is amazing.

I love the singing in Nobody Home. I listened to the Wall really late at night for the 2nd time last night. Not quite as freaky as the first time, but still cool.

Broken Arrow 09-01-2005 11:22 AM

My dad showed my "One of these Days" on Delicate Sound of Thunder VHS.

robo2448 09-01-2005 11:24 AM

I bought DSOTM, because all my friends said it was awesome. I remember hearing Speak to Me, and I was like, what the fuck is this when I heard the heart beating. The first time I heard the cd, I only liked Time and Us And Them. Then I downloaded Wish You Were Here, which I really liked, and then I gave DSOTM a few more listens, and really got into Floyd.

Lunch 09-01-2005 12:49 PM

Here is my attempt at a top ten Floyd song list (in no order):
SOYCD (6-9)
Dogs
Hey You
Interstellar Overdrive
Eclipse
Sheep
Echoes
One of These Days
Pigs (Three Different Ones)
Astronomy Domine

marmalade_skies 09-01-2005 01:20 PM

I think I heard Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2) on a Music Choice channel on my TV.

After that I heard a handful of some other songs on the radio and stuff and my brother ended up buying the wall, which was the first actual Floyd album I listened to.

magicbus 09-01-2005 01:42 PM

I heard DSOTM from a friend, and I was amazed. I couldn't believe it, I especially liked the vocals. It was just awesome hearing that for the first time.

bibbl 09-01-2005 02:07 PM

Hey, I was listening to clips of Piper at the Gates of Dawn and is it just me or do they sound like the beatles? That might have just been those little clips, but that was the first thing that popped into my head.
I think I heard Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2) on a Music Choice channel on my TV
That was also the first Floyd song i heard and i decided to buy The Wall and it was the craziest cd's i'd ever heard, but then i listened to it a few more times and i realized how awesome it was.

A few months later i saw the movie The Wall which made very little sense to me.

well for most of my life ive only heard another brick in the wall pt 2, run like hell, time, and on the run.

then when i was 11 (2 years ago) i started listening to the rock station on the radio a lot and got introduced to brain damage/eclipse, mother, hey you, wish you were here, have a cigar, welcome to the machine, comfortably numb, and breathe.

then at the beginning of this summer i took a listen to PATGOD and became obsessed with it and it sparked a new series of obsessions over their other albums.....so basically im listening to album after album for the past 3 months and my obsession might possibly stop once i finish listening to every single album.

but i'll always love pink floyd

It's just you, PATGOD reminds me very little of the Beatles.

I don't know. It might have been just those clips, they were only 30 seconds long. It sounded like a totally different band to me, though.

Dr. Jake Destructo 09-01-2005 04:32 PM

I finally have all of PATGOD. I'm listening to Matilda Mother right now, and so far, the album is living up to it's expectations.

^Woohoo to the first September 05er

Yeah, thats a great jam. Gilmour really goes nuts on the slide guitar.

FlyingPaul_83 09-01-2005 05:58 PM

I just finshed listening to Animals, and all I have to say is wow. I like this album a lot. This is my first time hearing pink floyd, besides another brick in the wall. I judged thewse guys wayt too quickly.
