I enjoy playing drums but I'd hate to have to bother with a kit.

Though I guess once I got the hang of it I'd take pride in doing it smoothly and quickly.

I do plan to get a drum kit one day but it is in a long line after a car and a house.

I also wouldn't mind. Although it also wouldn't hurt for me to learn to play guitar properly. I think the main reason I dislike the whole "hurrr, bass is a guitar," or "you already play guitar," thing is because the sad reality is that I suck balls at it. Although I'm pretty awesome on bass.

gaslight 11-10-2009 09:18 AM

Guitar is a breeze man, all you have to do is spend a lot of time playing it. I've been playing guitar almost as long as bass but I've never done a performance in a band as a guitarist.
I can't say for sure, but it's too heavy for an average/slightly athletic person to carry on their own for more than getting it over a small step.

I'd hazard a guess at over 45kg. And I have another cab as well.
My 4x10 weighs 68 lbs.
My 1x18 weighs 59 lbs.
My power amp weighs 47 lbs, plus the rack and crossover is ~ 60lbs.

Sure, it's not all one unit...and thank god too. If I had to carry all of those in one unit, I'd be dead.

45kg is pretty darn heavy. Is that your TE? They make heavy cabs, I can't imagine throwing a 2U head into it as well. If one of my cabs were like that, my amp + 4x10 would weigh ~52 kg (over 100 lbs)

FunkMetalBass 11-10-2009 09:54 AM
Ah well. Less hassle than a drum kit.
True dat.

That stage was cursed, though. The drummers gear kept sliding forward (on a no-slip pad on top of carpet). The rhythm guitarist's E and A strings snapped at the bridge (but stayed coiled, like just the core snapped) on the last note of the last song. My amp didn't work. Our lead guitarist had problems with one of his Les Pauls and had to make a last-minute switch/tune back to the other one which stays in a weird tuning.

We've never had any of these problems before and ALL of them happened on that night. I'm just glad that they happened during a small show.

gaslight 11-10-2009 09:59 AM

Haha **** that.

Venues should keep a few bricks handy to stop sliding kits.

You know, I might suggest he throw some bricks in the truck for the next gig.

Another problem is that he uses a POS kit and a DW7000 pedal held together by orange duct tape.

He needs to get a job so that he can buy some decent equipment.

gaslight 11-10-2009 11:03 AM

For reals.

I'm toying with the idea of making a wallet out of tape after an hour or so of teaching prep.

FunkMetalBass 11-10-2009 12:41 PM

I'm toying with the idea of doing my math homework.

Actually, I'll most definitely be doing it...I just need to find my math book **sigh**

I'm also toying with the idea of getting chinese food for lunch. I just don't have a clue what I want.

Nice work dude. I kinda wish I was overweight so I could work it off.

So much freakin' easier than going from skinny as hell and trying to put weight and muscle on at the same time. :(

FunkMetalBass 11-11-2009 10:07 AM

So here's the deal, I'm changing the pickups in my bass from DiMarzios to some Nordstrands. Currently, both volume pots are push/pull because my DiMarzios can be individually run in series/parallel. The Nordstrands, however, cannot. Rather than pull out the pots, I figured that I could use them to my advantage. I'd like to keep the traditional Vol/Vol/Tone setup, and I'll probably make one of them a series/parallel switch for the two pickups, but I'm not sure what to do on the other one. Suggestions?

Suggestions?

50% calorie surplus, 60% carbs 30% protein 10% fat plus creatine monohydrate and bcaas.

The Brad 11-11-2009 11:38 AM

You don't need that supplementation bullshit and you need 20-25% fat.

Ridiculously hard to get that much unsaturated fat in a day...plus although sat. fat increases the amount of testosterone a little bit, it slows down protein synthesis and the beautiful anabolic state you're in after workouts.

FunkMetalBass 11-11-2009 12:04 PM

I don't get it. I've been running every day and having copious amounts of sex...why am I not ripped?

gaslight 11-11-2009 12:06 PM

Gotta be eating right yo, and maybe some weights. Takes a fair bit of effort lifestyle wise.

About 3 months ago, I changed my dietary habits. Probably no more than 1600 calories a day now. No soda - only juice, tea, and water. No more greasy fast food (subway and salads are still okay). No smoking with the exception of the occasional cigarette. Alcohol has been cut back to a shot and a beer, only on weekends, and that's not even all the time. And, I'm trying to allot 8 hours a day for sleep.

I guess the only thing to do now that I'm in the habit of healthy eating is to step up the general working out. Sex & preforming can only do so much. :upset:

Protein is 1g/lb body weight is a maximum. (~20% is good)
How is it that hard to get that much fat in? Olive oil, avocados, almonds, walnuts, peanut butter. :thumb:
I don't care about the broscience, fat is necessary for bodily functions and yes they are a precursor to your sterols.

FMB, not a diss on you but you have to have muscle to begin with to look ripped. The male body type perpetuated by magazines and culture isn't normal, they are heavily doctored digitally or dehydrated and fasting to look that way.

15% is your average joe, and that's a good thing to shoot for.
12% is your athletic type.
8% (granted it looks more like 10% than single digit) is competitive body builder level.

BassVirtuoso 11-11-2009 12:49 PM

^I guess it all comes down to genetics. Personally, I find too much saturated fat anytime before 6:00 pm has a negative effect on anything I'm trying to do that day. I'm sure some people are more receptive to fats though...

The Brad 11-11-2009 12:55 PM

Appearance is 1) genetics 2) nutrition 3) work

Saturated ("bad") fat comes from animal sources.
There is no efficacy in a high fat diet for optimal sports performance (although there are cultures with high saturated fat diets (i.e. French and Inuit) but I not sure I understand what you are saying. You don't notice your gains on a daily basis if you consume fats? If that's what you are saying, that's enormously psychological on your part. But what negative effects are you referring to?

BassVirtuoso 11-11-2009 12:59 PM

Saturated fat generally slows down the intensity of you're workout if you have too much before a workout and slows muscle uptake if you take it postworkout. Trust me I get enough a day, especially now that my diet is 60% fat thanks to the cyclical ketogenic diet I'm on. But when I'm on a bulking diet I usually try to avoid fat for most of the day until night, except for olive oil in shakes and fish oil in the morning.

The Brad 11-11-2009 02:52 PM

Again, I am not advocating high intake of saturated fat.
Mono and polyunsaturated fats are promoted as "good" fats. 30% dietary fat is just an easy recommendation because it's easy to say 10% Sat, 10% mono, 10% poly.

Also, not trying to step on your toes but I am just curious if you have taken a college level general biology course or maybe even nutrition? I know ketogenic and paleo diets are all the rage, but you might want to seriously re-evaluate your diet. Where are you getting your information, advice, and inspiration?

Care to post a natural (non-flexed) photo? Also, are you working toward aesthetics or is it sport specific?

Well I've read various scholarly journals about the diet along with the books based on the diet including BodyOpus by the late Dan Duchaine and the e-book The Ketogenic Diet by Lyle McDonald.

Just to reiterate, it's not a purely ketogenic diet, as you are only in ketosis for about 4 days, which is just enough to lose about a pound of fat a week without any muscle loss. There's a difference between a lifestyle diet and a specific diet. Of course I'm not staying on this diet for longer than a cycle because it's not a very healthy diet for your whole life.

Other places I get advice:
Bodybuilding.com forums
cuttingedgemuscle.com forums
Elitefitness.com forums

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that my diet and nutrition suggestions are from a bodybuilding standpoint whereas your suggestions are for normal people that want to be healthy. So I actually agree with you 100% with your suggestions.

Hey Gaslight, wherever the hell you are. I was on ACA for the story about Santa. Footage from two years ago with me sporting bleached blonde hair prior to my dyeing pink for schoolies. I want royalties.

Nice. I need to build me a pedalboard. I'm hoping to take some time today to do it. I currently only use two pedals and a wireless, but it'd be nice to have it all set up and ready to go for the stage.

What kind of pedalboard do you use?
please don't tell me you are planning on playing a show instrumentally. or worse yet, with your bassist singing again.
We're definitely doing it with the bassist singing. Thanks for the interest.
As I said before, it's nice when the person who's singing actually knows the songs and can sing them all the way through, so it was a pretty obvious choice.

Spaceman Spiff 11-12-2009 11:44 AM

Holy crap this performance is amazing. So much emotion. Makes me shiver like mad.
