Why, it's triplets at 142, that's not insane...

Now if this were the Winter Madness solo we were talking about then I'd want proof.

ShadowsFallen:All of Kissing the Shadows or just the bridge?
There's a difference between being able to "play something" and make something sound good, like the cd. I've had a lot of experiences with people saying they can play this and play that etc, but when I hear them do so, I can't help but laugh.
Example, some kid saying he can play 6 notes per beat at 120bpm (Serrana) and then the recording = complete crap.

Point is, Bed of Razors solo isn't easy just because it's slow. Those string skipped arpeggios will probably cause alot of people problems.

Shadows 12-21-2005 06:44 PM

Dream Theater has nothing on DragonForce. At least Li can wank for five minutes and make it fun to listen to.

Sure but there are loads of scalar parts and stuff that are pretty easy. As for making it sound good, I guess you just have to master whatever you're playing to make it sound good, it'll come naturally after a while.

Exactly.

Toaster 12-21-2005 06:46 PM

Big disagreement there. I can't listen to a Dragonforce album for more than 30 minutes, or my head explodes from happiness overload.

Shadows 12-21-2005 06:48 PM

Dream Theater makes me want to reach into my skull and slowly scrape out my cerebrum out of sheer boredom. Sounds like we're agreed (to disagree).

Toaster 12-21-2005 06:50 PM

It always shocks me when people say DT bores them. I mean, they're far less repetitive and generic than Dragonforce. They've actually evolved as a band, and have tried to be at least somewhat different than other bands in their genre. (ahemunlikedragonforceahem)

Silenius 12-21-2005 06:50 PM

Happiness>250 BPM F# mixolydian shredding or whatever the **** is "hard" now-a-days.

Shadows 12-21-2005 06:52 PM

Dream Theater has released 10+ albums and DragonForce has yet to release their third. A comparison can hardly be made in that area.

The extreme soloing keeps DF from sounding repetitive or generic at all, so I never get tired of them.

Toaster 12-21-2005 06:53 PM

But they sound like all other power metal. I'm not saying they're not awesome, I do love Dragonforce. But DT are just more interesting.

Actually I have the third Dragonforce cd. It's quite good.:thumb:

I do too, and I like it a hell of a lot, but it hasn't been officially released yet.

The vocals and riffs and keyboards etc. they use do, but the insane emphasis on soloing sets them apart. It makes it fun for me at least, but I've heard very little DT that I like.

Are you talking about Sonic Firestorm or Inhuman Rampage? I own Sonic Firestorm too, but Inhuman Rampage isn't released anywhere until January of 2006.

I implore you to do so. It will change your life for the METAL! \m/ Also, give it to everyone you know, so as to make Florida a more metal place.

On the topic of shredding, have all of you discovered the true secret to amazing shredding? (Neck pickup)

Shadows 12-21-2005 07:13 PM

I prefer the bridge. The neck pickup doesn't make me go any faster, it just makes it sound bassier.

Toaster 12-21-2005 07:15 PM

Wow. Get a sense of humor.

Tons of power metal bands use it.. it makes speed picking sound awesome. It's obviously not used to enhance speed, but tone.

Shadows 12-21-2005 07:15 PM
Wow. Get a sense of humor
I was joking. :(

I know what you meant, I just prefer the tone of the bridge. I have yet to hear my tone recorded though, and I think that may give me a better feel for what my tone is like.

MRDuCran 12-21-2005 07:16 PM

The neck is definately much smooth but I prefer the clicky, harsh sound from the bridge same as Alexi. Also, picking near the bridge helps get that sound.

Silenius 12-21-2005 07:19 PM

I like neck better, especially for sweeps.

Hey, no worries. :) I'm just feeling a bit hostile tonight, sorry.

I love how the neck pickup sounds with sweep picking.. I still can't understand why Alexi doesn't have one.

Apocalyptic Raids 12-21-2005 07:22 PM

I use bridge for rhythm (sp?), and often for leads as well. Mostly because I can't be bothered changing :-D

It happens. :)

I find it a little stupid that Alexi doesn't have a neck pickup. I use it on the clean channel, and I often play clean. Once I turn on the distortion I stay on the bridge all the time like AR, but lack of a neck would still kill me.

IheartSP 12-21-2005 07:26 PM

Silenius I completely agree about Wintersun. Jari totally pwns Alexi in technical skill, after listening to that album it's hard to deny that. As far as writing he is undoubably the best songwriter I've ever seen in my entire life. I don't think there are any songs more well written than any one song on that album, not even any Bodom songs. Wintersun I think is on course to be the best metal band ever to hit the face of this earth, one album isn't enough to judge that yet though. It's possible Alexi would even have trouble playing the solo to Beautiful Death or Death and the Healing. As far as the whole composition goes it's so extremely well layered that I hear a new thing everytime, and each instrument isn't so in your face that a lead guitar part isn't in their to be a blazing lead but only to contribute to the overall atmosphere of the music. An extremely unique way of writing music I must say, I don't see a lot of it like that, true genius at work.

ShadowsFallen to avoid dispute you should probably just ignore all that.

Toaster 12-21-2005 07:26 PM

Ah the clean channel! A long lost lover. Yes, the neck is preferable especially to tame my amazing, unbelievably powerful EMG active humbucking pickups.

Sure thing. I'm out of the Wintersun stuff.

Im a fool then

PsychoticFlubber 12-21-2005 08:00 PM

I know this might seem kind of random and off topic-ish, but since the topic of clean sound is brought up. Is there anyone else here who prefers a classical acoustic guitar over a normal one like a dreadnought? Maybe I am just wierd, but I think the sound it so much better.

And I only half agree to the neck pickup thing. I think it sounds bad when you are speed picking. I only use it on clean tone and for sweeping sometimes. Otherwise, distorted it is useless.

Shattered_Future 12-21-2005 08:07 PM
Im a fool then
He's got a point though...listen to Dragonforce.

Only 1 album has a complete amount of songs where none stands out, simply because they are perfection (and it isn't Wintersun).

That album is Character, by Dark Tranquillity.

Classicals are a hell of a lot easier to play than a normal acoustic...smaller neck.
