I know you're the doom authority here so I'm not going to argue with you, I just wasn't into them.
Sorry - bad day yesterday. You got off quite lightly! :chug:

If you liked the music but were just put off by Messiah's operatic vox then maybe check out the first album (Epicus Doomicus Metallicus) as that had a different singer. Solitude Aeturnus may also be more to your liking.

I still think you're mad for not liking Candlemass though.

Jondur 06-21-2006 03:03 AM

Goddaaamn Trouble are ace. The self-titled is practically a fixture of my car stereo now. Unfortunately it's a bit of a licence loser - have to make a conscious effort to keep the speed down!

Come on people let me hear you say
You b@stards are gonna pay!

Werny 06-21-2006 07:26 AM

I know everyone loves all the traditional and stonerised stuff...but can I get any love for funeral doom?

I did a review for Skepticism's Farmakon if anyone's interested.

I got Esoteric's latest, Subconscious Dissolution Into The Continuum, and it's one bada$$ mofo. The Blood Of The Eyes is the first ever song with growling in it to almost get a tear out of me, and the second half of it is really heavy and insane.

No :thumb:

It's arse. :chug:

Goblin ****!

They are so good, I have that album and I love it. The singer sounds like the guy from Pinback at times.

God dam, now people aren't gonna give funeral a chance because you hate it.

Terrorizer have a 3-issue doom special going on...it's awesome, you'd expect it to be really mainstream but they have two pages on funeral, interviews with guys who run fanzines, bits about drone and even two pages on doom album art! It's given me a lot of bands to check out.

Guys...I really wanna get into the old trad doom, so what's the band to start with? Trouble? Witchfinder General? Vitus? Count Raven?

Kyle 06-21-2006 02:12 PM

You should check out some Revelation...

Bartender 06-22-2006 03:57 AM
God dam, now people aren't gonna give funeral a chance because you hate it.
To be fair, I didn't like it (what I'd heard at least) already. I'm quite a fan of some drone, but funeral doom just generally bores me to tears.

Jondur 06-22-2006 04:28 AM
God dam, now people aren't gonna give funeral a chance because you hate it.
If I had that sort of power then there'd be a lot less crap stoner discussed in here! I want that power!! MWAAHHAAAHAHAAHA
Guys...I really wanna get into the old trad doom, so what's the band to start with? Trouble? Witchfinder General? Vitus? Count Raven?
It depends. You could start at the beginning. Sabbath, early Pentagram, Vitus, Trouble etc.

Or you could work backwards - Reverend Bizarre, Warning, Count Raven, Revelation etc.

Or you could start in the middle and listen to say Penance.

That's my favourite album of all time. Have you heard Justin Greaves' new band Crippled Black Phoenix?

Green Machine.

Kyle 06-22-2006 05:09 PM

^^I'd add Demon Cleaner to that.

PAJJ 06-22-2006 05:43 PM

Spaceship Landing is my fav.

Mondo Generator is cool.

Muahahahahahaha!
I want to get one of Esoteric's earlier albums...but I don't know what one. Eeeegh.

I finally got a slab of traditional doom! Witchfinder General's Friends of Hell...I take back everything I've said before about trad doom. I love it!

I used to have no idea what people were on about when they said Melvins were the first really slow band and they practically invented drone. But I just heard Eye Flys and well, that changed a lot!
That's my favourite album of all time. Have you heard Justin Greaves' new band Crippled Black Phoenix?
I'm still at the level of doom noob, so I haven't even heard Iron Monkey. He's an amazing drummer though, emulates Dale Crover very well.

AA-12 06-22-2006 10:24 PM

Is Anethema any good?

Jondur 06-23-2006 03:53 AM

I still enjoy the debut and the 2 EPs. Past that I lost interest.

the2stranger 06-23-2006 04:16 AM
Is Anethema any good?
Opposite to Jondor, I like the new stuff better.
Very nice prog stuff with a lot of dark influences.

I don''t like the vocals on the earlier doom releases.
Iron Monkey aren't really that good, if I remember correctly. I checked them out when Johnny died. To be fair that was a while ago, maybe I'll have changed my mind.

americanfootball 06-23-2006 06:42 AM

Iron Monkey were amazing! I saw them once live as well, although the sound was really bad. They were a bit of a phenomenon when their first album was released, and got loads of press coverage.

Werny 06-23-2006 07:03 AM

Ah. I'll still check Iron Monkey out for all times sake though...they play sludge right?

Eyehategod are the best sludge band. The angriest music I've ever heard.

the2stranger 06-23-2006 07:04 AM

Werny:
You like Esoteric too?

Smackers 06-23-2006 07:18 AM
Listen to all of Llenandose de Gusanos before you go to sleep :)
I've had it ordered for over 2 weeks now and apparently it's on back order so it'll be a little while before I get it. I'll just have to stick with El Mundo Frio for now.

Kyle 06-23-2006 09:49 AM
Eyehategod are the best sludge band. The angriest music I've ever heard.
Nuh uh, Electric wizard all the way.

_Tyler 06-23-2006 07:19 PM

I thought Electric Wizard were a doom band. My favourite sludge band is either Eyehategod or Crowbar.

ATM 06-23-2006 07:21 PM

I love Electric Wizard. I really do need to look into more in the stoner/doom genre.

I only really know Orange Goblin, Goblin ****, and **** like that.

_Tyler 06-23-2006 07:49 PM

I guess I was wrong about Candlemass, I've been listening to Nightfall and it destroys.
