Dr. Jake Destructo 12-22-2006 05:58 PM

I really dislike the distortion cloaking what sounds like all of their songs. It's annoying.

Kage 12-22-2006 06:00 PM

Well that's part of what you get when Justin Broaderick touches anything. It's meant to induce a kind of drone that layers over the melody of the songs in true shoegaze fashion.

Dr. Jake Destructo 12-22-2006 06:01 PM

So this is shoegaze?

Kage 12-22-2006 06:02 PM

Not really, just the fact that everything is drowned in layers of distortion is similar. I dunno, I'd make the comparison but I'm afraid someone from Alt&Indie will come in and tear it up.

Still, it's more of a drone/post metal sound than anything.

Eliminator 12-22-2006 06:11 PM

i'm a tear you up bitch
Jesu's Silver EP is amazzzzzzzing beyond belief.

Go back to the BM thread, fatty.
I have that one.

It's horrible. All poppy and unatmospheric

Eliminator 12-22-2006 06:58 PM

damn poppy unatmospheric bullshit

1) It's not poppy in the least (besides Star, if you're not paying attention)
2) Poppy=bad?
3) Atmospheric=good?

Wake up there, Mackenzie.

AA-12 12-22-2006 07:20 PM

It's one of the happiest albums i've heard :-\

I don't like much poppy stuff unless it's like power metal.

Atmospheric = #1 trait in post-rock I look for.

You must not hear a lot of albums outside of your little cave :p. The majority of it is pretty sad.

Power metal isn't poppy. You need to watch some TV or something, you have no idea what poppy is

Why look for a trait? If it's good, it's good. If it's not, it's not. Pretty ingenius system, no?

Txus 12-22-2006 07:27 PM

Goddamn, Josh

Silver is so ****ing good, much better than the S/T.

AA-12 12-22-2006 07:28 PM

I hear plenty.

Yes it is. I'm saying poppy as in upbeat, happy, etc.

The only good post rock in my eyes are ones that focus on atmosphere. I don't see how post rock can be good without being atmospheric.

sonicst0rm 12-22-2006 07:36 PM

Anyone like Ambulance LTD or The Album Leaf? My friend gave me those 2 CDs, would they be considered post rock?

AA-12 12-22-2006 07:39 PM

The Album Leaf is good stuff.

A Silver Mt. Zion - He Has Left Us Alone But Shafts of Light Sometimes Grace the Corner Of Our Rooms

Good music, though. :)

Txus 12-22-2006 10:43 PM

Pretentious? Listen to Te and tell me those titles aren't pretentious.

Or Bal-Sagoth.

Dr. Jake Destructo 12-22-2006 11:13 PM

I think that if anything, in instrumental music, if you use a longer title to explain a certain version or to set a certain mood, you're being less implicit.

Less implicit = less vague = less pretentious.

Kage 12-23-2006 12:51 AM

A few laughable developments in this thread:

1) That if something is upbeat and happy it is poppy
Corollary to #1) If something satisfies the above requirements, it is also bad.
2) Post rock MUST have atmosphere, as if atmosphere is a concrete idea that cannot have several subjective interpretations
3) Long titles are obviously pretentious.

TojesDolan 12-23-2006 01:49 AM

Well I didn't mean it that way, hah.

It was more as in having the song titled as:

F:\A Silver Mt. Zion - He Has Left Us Alone But Shafts of Light Sometimes Grace the Corner Of Our Rooms\A Silver Mt. Zion - He Has Left Us Alone But Shafts of Light Sometimes Grace the Corner Of Our Rooms - 01 - Broken Chords can sing a little

which is probably not accepted by windows very much.

Oh my god, this thread (particularly the last page or two) makes me want to bash my head against a rock.

I wonder how I'm going to name those songs and still make it viable for my computer NOT to crash and die... Hmmm.

Make your computer not suck. It works for the other Red Sparowes fans.

Fucking pretentious title. :upset:
It was originally "He has left us alone", but Efrim didn't feel this properly conveyed the message

It's hardly even a title, in the sense that any other type of musician would name an album. I think it's very beautiful, and i don't like "pretentious" as a critisism of any music.

Dr. Jake Destructo 12-23-2006 04:50 PM

Actually, pretentious is exactly what that title conveys, however, I think pretense has grown into this glowering euphemism.

Grammitically, pretense can be broken down to 'before an event', right?

Pretense in music can be explained as something which occurs before listening. There's little pretense established in an album titled Dirt, but with He Has Left Us Alone But Shafts of Light Sometimes Grace the Corner Of Our Rooms, don't you get this vivid idea of what the album may sound like? Being overly descript is in no way a bad thing unless of course you're worried about all that text boggind down your computer like Tojes.
