Does anyone else here thinks John has/had awesome stage presence?
I'm not being sarcastic either. The way he just stood there, you can see the confidence in his stone-cold face.....he's such a badass without even trying to be. Though he always tended to stare at Pete and Roger while singing, which might show unconfidence, but whatever, I just love his stance. |
I finally got around to really listening to the Royal Alber Hall CDs, and I was really pleasently surprised. They still have so much energy and are just so interesting to hear live. Obviously John isn't there anymore and they are a bit older, so I wouldn't expect their upcoming tour to be quite the same quality, but I'm still greatly looking forward to it.
Yup, that's a good one. If you see the DVD the crowd is a bit subdued, it being a high profile charity gig and some sort of Royalty being in attendence, I believe. But it kicks up quite a storm, nonetheless. And John sounds great, amirite? Also, do you have the one with the bonus cuts that were added after John's death? ie. I Don't Even Know Myself, etc...?
I really need to get one of The Who's albums, I only have a Greatest Hits and some songs I downloaded off of Limewire. Which album should I get first?
I would recommend the single disc version of Live At Leeds. Especially if your username implies what you usually listen to (Motley Crue kinda stuff?) or Quadrophenia. Both of which kick serious arse. The extended version of Live At Leeds or Live At The Isle Of Wright will also do. But they have Tommy slapped right in the middle. Which will ruin the studio version of it for you forever. |
I hate Motley Crue now for the record I made the username a year ago.

John: I think I got the one you were talking about because it has I Don't Even Know Myself. It's on the disc 3 with Young Man Blues, I'm Free, and Summertime Blues. |
Hey Lunch. I'm here to whore out my review of Townshends "Empty Glass" for sputnik and to give this thread a healthy bump. So go go go! 'Cause as you well know, I am:
a whore for Pete's solo career.
:p Oh, and just to add some useful content to this post, here 'ya go. From Pete's Diary: 2 January 2006 Rachel and Pete have five tracks on the IAC charts TOP TEN Rachel and I now have five songs in the top 10 at IAC. JUST BREATHE, IN THE MIX, SUNRISE and I'M ONE. One of them, PLEASURE SEEKER is not strictly a Rachel/Pete track. So congratulations to Rachel and her co-writer Jo Youle. We have over 25,000 downloads on these five tracks, and the IAC is now topping out at 250,000 visits a day. I would like to thank the folks at IAC for getting behind Rachel and me in this way: I feel as excited about these hits as I was about my first chart entry with The Who's first single in 1965. I'm grateful to have new fans, and I know Rachel is over the moon. Rachel and I are talking about the idea of putting out a special EP CD of tracks we do together. An important point: True independence in the record industry is hard to define these days. Rachel and I, and the folks at IAC, are all aware that the Rachel Fuller/Pete Townshend 'independent' releases exist in a safety zone not enjoyed by most up-and-coming artists. I hope that all the other brilliant new artists also in the IAC chart will accept that this extraordinary event will attract a lot of interest to IAC and to their new music. I know that IAC are now considering my suggestion that they establish a new chart for artists who enjoy a safety zone of some kind, but I'll leave it to them to decide how to proceed. - Pete Townshend Seems as if Pete has been busy with his little gal pal lately. Oh, and welcome our newest contributer to this thread, Entwistle. Wherever he is? I expect him to be showing up soon....yet another crazy Who fan.... |
Lately I've really been into songs like "Let's See Action","The Relay" and "Join Together". I'm really glad my dad has the 30 Years of Maximum R&B box set so I could get my hands on these tracks. To me they have a lot of power and/or really strong messages that make the music even better. Just great material that I can't believe they couldn't get onto an album (if Who's Next had these songs in the middle instead it would probably be the best album ever).

lunch, still willing to maybe upload the royal albert hall cds? eh? eh? i would pay you in uploads.

Oh yea, I didn't mean to ignore your request, I just forgot. I'm going to put Disc 3 in with Disc 2 because it's only four songs. Edit: http://www.recordnerd.com/lists/lunch998 If you have any of those in the wanted section it would help me a lot. |

Yeah, those are great tracks. The Who have another classic album lying around in bits and pieces. Probably a couple of them. And lets not forget "Long Live Rock", either. Which was a single and showed up on Odds and Sods, and that's it. Pink, I haven't forgotten about you. I've never uploaded anything to anyone before. What's the best and most effecient way I can get the X material to you, about how long will it take, and can I use my computer for other things while I do it? I have medium DSL. Just some basic info will help me get started in that direction. |
Oh yea, Long Live Rock is one I forgot to mention, as well as the Seeker. Originally I thought Long Live Rock was a little lame and cliche, but recently I've started liking it a lot more. It fits perfectly for the credits at the end of The Kids Are Alright.

Yeah, I think it paints a nice vivid picture of a chaotic Who gig. And it's funny, also: Down at the Astoria the scene was changing, Bingo and rock were pushing out X-rating, We were the first band to vomit in the bar, And find the distance to the stage too far, Meanwhile it's getting late at ten o'clock, Rock is dead they say, Long live rock. Long live rock, I need it every night, Long live rock, come on and join the line, Long live rock, be it dead or alive. People walk in sideways pretending that they're leaving, We put on our makeup and work out all the lead-ins, Jack is in the alley selling tickets made in Hong Kong, Promoter's in the pay box wondering where the band's gone, Back in the pub the governor stops the clock, Rock is dead, they say, Long live rock. Long live rock, I need it every night, Long live rock, come on and join the line, Long live rock, be it dead or alive. Landslide, rocks are falling, Falling down 'round our very heads, We tried but you were yawning, Look again, rock is dead, rock is dead, rock is dead. The place is really jumping to the high-watt amps, 'Til a 20-inch cymbal fell and cut the lamps, In the blackout they dance right into the aisle, And as the doors fly open even the promoter smiles, Someone takes his pants off and the rafters knock, Rock is dead, they say, Long live rock, long live rock, long live rock. Long live rock, long live rock, long live rock, Long live rock, long live rock, long live rock. Long live rock, I need it every night, Long live rock, come on and join the line, Long live rock, be it dead or alive. Pete does a great job on vocals, too. Pure And Easy is another great tune that never made an "official" album". Naked Eye, as well. |
Parts of it also seem very sentimental as well, like "...And find the distance to the stage too far", and "..And as the doors fly open even the promoter smiles".
Great Who songs not on an "official" album: The Seeker The Relay Join Together Long Live Rock Let's See Action Naked Eye Pure and Easy Baby Don't You Do It And obviously many earlier cuts, especially the added bonus tracks on the Sell Out album. |

you should zip the album files using winzip or winrar. then go to www.yousendit.com and upload the zip/rar file and have it send it to me at pinkfreud2100@aol.com thanks a lot man. just do whatever album you think is their best or their most accessible. |

Yeah, I love Long Live Rock. It never gets the attention it should for an A grade rock anthem. |
It probably goes a bit underrated since it wasn't on an album. Albums last, and singles usually don't (unless they were huge, like Can't Explain, etc). Also, it doesn't really stand up as a rock anthem compared to Baba or Won't Get Fooled Again, so it's not easily recognizable. Still a very good song though.

When was it recorded? It sounds like a Quadrophenia- By Numbers era song.
When was it recorded? It sounds like a Quadrophenia- By Numbers era song.
Sometime between '71 and '74 I think. Anyways, yesterday I picked up the Live At the Isle of White DVD yesterday, and I'm loving it. They have so much stage presence... Even if some of the performances might not be quite Live at Leed's calibar, the fact that there's video to acompany it makes it increadible. |

I want to say 1972 off the top of my head. If I'm remembering correctly when Townshend was searching for concepts before he settled on the Quadrophenia idea, he dabbled in something about the life of rock, and if rock is dead, or something to that extent. He went through quite a few ideas before getting to the mod story that become Quadrophenia. And as you said, it's nice to have any video from their prime years. Some parts still stun me when I watch it (Young Man Blues is amazing). |

Yeah, that might be my favorite so far. I haven't had time to watch all of Tommy yet, but I shall soon. |
I've always like the Overture so that performance was great for me, and the finish on We're Not Gonna Take It is really magical, honestly. I was upset that they didn't have the Amazing Journey>Sparks footage though.

No Sparks  even the Woodstock one kicked ***! |
I know, it's on the soundtrack but not the DVD. Unfortunate, I really wish I could see footage of Amazing Journey and Sparks, considering how absolutely amazing the versions at Leeds and at the Isle of Wight are.
|
Tommy....
Lunch, I recommend you STOP posting. :) |
Haha, that was really funny to me for some reason.
How 'bout that Who? |
Yeah, they kick up a storm. New info says they will be hitting the road by summer and taking it all over the world. They are back in studio this month with the band and Pete sounds energized. I'm really looking forward to this. Hopefully the old geezers don't give out before the end of the year. :(
|
Pete says the American leg of the tour starts in September, which sucks for me cause I'm gonna be going of to college when that happens. I was hoping it would be in the summer so I could go with my friends around here, but oh well. I have to see them anywhere they go.
Edit: I'm working on a review of Live at Leeds, mainly out of boredom but also because I'm trying to express how amazing it is in words. Edit 2: Here's the finished review, comment please: http://www.sputnikmusic.com/album.php?reviewid=5171 |
The Who will headline T in the Park alongside the Red Hot Chili Peppers
I'm (hoping I will go) going although I got to go by aeroplane from the Netherlands :P |

I'm (hoping I will go) going although I got to go by aeroplane from the Netherlands :P
I live in America and have no idea what that is, but it will no doubt be an awesome double headliner show. And if The Who come on last (which I'm sure they will) they will have to turn in a strong performance to follow the Chili Peppers. Should be a good gig. |

I really wish I could go, but alas I live in America. Amagin if they had Flea come out to play a few numbers with, it would the closest to having John back they've come so far. |
T in the park is in scotland
and on 7july I'm seeing Sting here so it will be hard to get to scotland but I'll try :P |
