I'm a relative n00b to doom metal, although I love what I've heard from it: Agalloch, Candlemass, Isole - all great stuff. Anyone have any recommendations for what to check out next?
Well don't expect anything like Agalloch, seeing as they're not doom metal and all.

I love doom like sex. I tried checking out some Funeral Doom. Nortt is awesome, best atmosphere I've ever heard. But the other band I checked out... Thergothon. Yeah they are horrible, there's no heaviness, the production just ruins everything and the guitar has this annoying effect on it.

UpperDecker 04-08-2006 11:18 PM

I still don't know any doom bands. Can i get some band names so i can hear them on myspace(lol). Its faster than having to download them.

Yea i should have done that in the first place, sorry bout that. But next time can you not be such a p-rick about it?

Silenius 04-09-2006 12:18 AM

Isole and Solstice are the Doom Metal I've been listening to lately. (Thanks to Freezing Moon.)

Besides them I'm into Khanate, Sunn O))), Jesu etc. (Yeah some of those are Drone/Doom, o well.)
Sabbath is not a doom band.
:amaze:, maybe not completely but they are definitely essential to the genre.

Steerpike 04-09-2006 01:34 AM

Nightfall, Tales of Creation, and the self-titled.

Spirit Caravan - Jug Fulla Sun
Confessor - Condemed
Solstice - Lamentations
While Heaven Wept - Chapter One: 1989-1999

rhcp pman 04-09-2006 04:24 AM

I only just started getting into doom metal recently (apart from Black Sabbath and Starchild), and I'm downloading a doom metal torrent now.

I've been listening to Candlemass' Epicus Doomicus Metallicus very frequently in the last 3 days. It's pure gold. I love it.

repcak 04-09-2006 05:25 AM

for me there exist two types of doom metal

#1) the traditional ones who are in tradition of black sabbaths self titled album -> f.e.: Candlemass, who are more rock than metal

#2) doom metal bands who play doom metal but have nothing in common with the traditional doom metal! f.e.: Anathema, My Dying Bride, Katatonia, Sunn O))) (=Drone doom metal), Novembre, etc.
in this category i count bands from the funeral doom metal corner too! f.e.: Pantheist, Shades of Despair.

thats my definition of doom... and i prefer the second one - for me thats doom
Saint Vitus IS good doom.

But good doom means a bit stoner.

Even Kyuss, Josh Homme's old band is pretty doom-y.
Kyuss ain't doom

I think Electric Wizard are, but I dont really know, I class them as stoner

They rule

metal-militia 04-09-2006 06:48 AM

my favourites are:
Trouble
Saint Vitus
Pentagram
Witchfinder General
Ramesses
Electric Wizard

Last 2 have a bit more of a stoner influence.

Hey Husker, guess who.

Anyways, I love Candlemass. Other than that it's the only doom I have heard.

Vitriolic Rage 04-09-2006 12:06 PM

Post metal?
For ****s sake, all these stupid genres people invent piss me off.

Do you have any of their demos you could send me over AIM or MSN? My screen name's the same as this one.

Neurotoxin 04-09-2006 12:39 PM
Is Katatonia Doom Metal or Post Metal? Or neither?
Katatonia have been both a doom metal band and a (depressive) rock band.
Amorphis has nothing in common with doom metal
Nah, they certainly have some doom elements.

As for me, some doom(ish) bands I recommend include:

Anathema
Black Sabbath
Candlemass
Carnivore
Catacombs
Cathedral
Cirith Ungol
Confessor
Count Raven
Cultus Sanguine
Doomshine
Ekklesiast
Electric Wizard (hottest guitarist in metal, click here)
Estatic Fear (highly recommended)
Forest of Shadows
Forest Stream
Isole
Katatonia
My Dying Bride
Nortt
November's Doom
Pantheist
Paramaecium
Place of Skulls
Reverend Bizarre
Saint Vitus
Saturnus
Solstice
Spirit Caravan
Swallow the Sun
Thalarion
The Gates of Slumber
The Liquescent Horror
The Prophecy
Torture Wheel
Uaral
Uncertainty Principle
Virgin Black
Whispering Gallery

I have albums from all of these bands on my computer, so if you'd like one, just hit me up on Soulseek (my SN is "Neurotoxin").

Sleepy 04-09-2006 12:52 PM

I don't have Soulseek, but I'm definitely interested in a lot of those bands. What about AIM?

Neurotoxin 04-09-2006 01:02 PM

I loathe AIM. What's your email?

joe_fresh 04-09-2006 01:07 PM
Confessor
I have their first album, Condemed which is amazing. I could listen to their drummer all day. But what is their newest album like?
Is Katatonia Doom Metal or Post Metal? Or neither?
at first they were doom death metal, now they are a depressive rock band or maybe even just doom metal

old Katatonia > new Katatonia

Vitriolic Rage 04-09-2006 02:32 PM
Do you have any of their demos you could send me over AIM or MSN? My screen name's the same as this one.
I have one demo track, A Close Study.
You can find it on their soundclick page.

Their ex-drummer used to frequent these forums, but I haven't seen him around for a while.
