Yea. JP's solo album should be good. We really need a new topic here.
It'll be released on march 1st...
Oh bugger, I meant I tried to get the 'Evening with...' CD.

TenYearsGone 02-25-2005 09:09 PM

Isn't the new solo album only avalible off of Johns' site?

Chicago Typewriter 02-25-2005 09:35 PM

I've just recently gotten into Dream Theater, so the only CD I have thus far is Train of Thought. The album is brilliant, but I found the lyrics to be a bit generic; any suggestions as to which album I should get next?

Images and Words is my favorite. Its a lot less heavy though, so you'd probably be better off getting Awake or Scenes From A Memory. Awake is my preference of those two, but both are awesome.

I've only seen that CD once in a store, I almost bought it except it was $30CDN and I was broke. :upset:

I haven't been dissapointed with a DT album yet. Personally, I really like Awake and Train of Thought. Though IaW is up there...I really like every song off there

I LOVE Surrounded...the whole "light to dark, dark to light" is really cool! :thumb:

I'm a nerd :upset:

IvortheEngineDriver 02-25-2005 11:59 PM

Personally, I think lyrically, Learning to Live is their best song.

"I fell in love to be let down"...what an amazing ****ing line!

The JoZ 02-26-2005 12:00 AM

Dream Theater have so many good lyrics it isn't funny.

Seriously, I think there are probably great lyrics on every album of theirs...save maybe WDaDU...simply because I don't know all the lyrics off that one yet, so...meh :p

Embodyment 02-26-2005 01:27 AM

Dream Theater is my fav metal band. but i have to admit that at times Labrie and Rudess make me absolutely CRINGE. some parts with the really wanky keyboards and when labrie sings all high it makes me almost embarrassed to listen to them. but when i hear the rest of the band it makes it all worth it. dont get me wrong, i like labrie's singing and rudess's playing. sometimes they make some of Dream Theater's most pivitol(sp?) moments for me, its just that they also make me cringe as well. but my fav band by far. they are the only band so far to make me bang my head and cry in the same song.

Firecracker 02-26-2005 10:36 AM

Epicness doesn't come in bits with DT, it comes all over the music.
I couldn't love this band more.

MAthiAS 02-26-2005 11:20 AM

What do you guys think is their best song lyrically? Space Dye Vest always got me... really all of Awake, and Blind Faith and Misunderstood.

The JoZ 02-26-2005 11:53 AM

First off, lyrically, I don't think their is a 'best' song of theirs. Alot of their songs speak to me in very different ways.

Particular favorites of mine include "Caught in a Web", "The Mirror/Lie", "Scarred", "The Glass Prison", "Trial of Tears", and really all of Train of Thought.

Secondly, for every moment that Jordan Rudess goes and does a 'wanky' solo, he makes up for it with something very tasteful, and beautiful. The piano solo in "Blind Faith", the piano in "Endless Sacrifice", almost all of Scenes From a Memory, the piano parts in "In the Name of God". Jordan's playing is simply top notch, and even if you don't like it when he goes and plays at Ludicrious Speed, I think there are more than enough moments to make up for that.

That being said, I do think there are a few times where I don't like Labrie's higher register singing, but most of it is off off Images and Words, so...he's learned to use his lower registers alot better, especially on Awake and Train of Thought.

National chaos sam 02-26-2005 11:54 AM

As i am is a good decent song though, it sets apart from most of their other stuff..

Man, I love that song so much. **** Kevin Moore leaving, then again I wouldn't want to hear Rudess.

The lyrics are a big let down for me in the whole DT field.

Distorted Vision 02-26-2005 03:18 PM

From mikeportnoy.com, posted by the man himself :

''On Friday February 25th 2005, Dream Theater wrapped up recording on their latest album. Mixing will be begin on Monday February 28th and the record will be delivered to the label in Mid-March. A release is expected for sometime around May/June through Atlantic Records.

Dream Theater began writing and recording their latest album last November at the world famous Hit Factory studios in New York City. (everybody from Michael Jackson, John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, Britney Spears, U2, Mariah Carey, REM, etc. etc. have all recorded at the legendary studio)
As has been reported in the media several weeks ago, the famous recording studio is closing down upon the completion of Dream Theater's recording session.

This album will hold the distinction of being the VERY LAST album ever recorded at the Hit Factory in NYC. (the first was Stevie Wonder's "Songs In The Key Of Life") After the Dream Theater sessions ended on Friday night, the lights were turned off and the doors were locked to the world famous studio - ending an era in the music industry....''

I can't wait. And that's a pretty cool piece of history to be involved in.

Quebec 02-26-2005 04:07 PM

I just can't wait! So cool!! I wonder what it will sound like...

MAthiAS 02-26-2005 04:21 PM

Yeah, are they continuing in the direction of Train of Thought?

Quebec 02-26-2005 04:32 PM

I think the music will probably be in the direction of ToT, but I'm sure they have evolved as they did on all of their cds. Anyway I'm sure it will rule

Distorted Vision 02-26-2005 04:47 PM

No, they've said that Train Of Thought let them indulge their metal influences, and now they're taking it in another direction. It's expected to be 'more progressive' (not my words), which may mean something really fresh, hopefully not just progressive in terms of sounding like all the other prog bands. I'm pretty confident that they've pulled off something quality though.

Quebec 02-26-2005 05:22 PM

They have always done original and quality work, so I'm not worried. I just hope that it won't be too soft, but I'm sure this is not going to happen, so it's ok
"What's it like? It's awesome. It's a little bit of everything — it's really a mixed bag. It's like classic DREAM THEATER where it's got some long songs, some short songs, some heavy songs…"
MAthiAS 02-26-2005 07:32 PM

Short songs and long songs? Okay, shortest song on the album will be 6 minutes, and longest will be 15. Sounds kind of like Awake though, that had a great mix of heavy and soft.

IvortheEngineDriver 02-28-2005 01:13 AM

I just hope they continue on this upward trend. Though, I think Kevin Moore should come back to write a few songs, that would be sweet.

Regardless, I am excited about this album. Hopefully, I can go see them this summer when they tour! It would make it for me :)

BradyEB 02-28-2005 02:23 AM

Hopfully they will come to NZ and make me happy. I'm really excited bout this new album!

SilenceNOmorE 02-28-2005 02:26 AM

**** straight! We need to start a petition to get DT out to Aus/NZ. Even if they only came to the Eastern States (I live in Perth) I'd probably beg, borrow and steal to go to Melbourne and see them

3rdplanet 02-28-2005 03:41 AM

I missed them last year, they only went to Manchester and London, couldn't get to either of the gigs, and I had only just started listening to them really.

I doubt they'll come. But it would be great.

Distorted Vision 02-28-2005 05:51 AM

I just hope they're playing some proper headline gigs in England, and not just festivals.
