I just heard Comfortably Numb again today, I hadn't heard it forever, and that song just proves that David Gilmour is the man.

Riva 11-18-2004 06:48 AM

What's the significance of the phrase "Piper at the Gates of Dawn"? I know it is a chapter of the "Wind in the Willows", but it also appears in the Iron Maiden song, "The Wicker Man". Any ideas?

frkn'loud 11-18-2004 07:02 AM

i think its got something to do with a piper piping early in the morning, just a theory. naa ive got no idea what it means.

btw i congratulate you, HeavyRiva on starting such a great thread, rep+

Riva 11-18-2004 06:55 PM

I have a copy of the Wind In The Willows as well. I should re-read the chapter, post haste!

DeusExMachina 11-18-2004 07:35 PM

Man... I haven't been in this forum in a little while. Anywho, I read A Wind in the Willows a long time ago, but I don't have a copy anymore. I should go buy it.

Speaking of books and Pink Floyd, I want to read Animal Farm soon.

Riva 11-18-2004 07:52 PM

Yes. Someone should make a list of books Floyd was inspired by, and then we can all read them and discuss them in true fanboy fashion. :p :thumb:
Speaking of books and Pink Floyd, I want to read Animal Farm soon.
Me too, but I am too busy with a term paper on another book :(

DeusExMachina 11-19-2004 02:08 PM

Animal Farm is a great book. I love it. By the way, Gilmour, your new icon is totally awesome.

Permanent Solution 11-19-2004 02:12 PM

Pink Floyd sucks*

Discuss.

*Is a great band with many solid literary inspirations

Yup, I like his new one better than the old one which is the same person but at a different angle ;)

Riva 11-20-2004 09:58 PM

So, what does everyone think that the best opening lyrics for a pink floyd song are?

Permanent Solution 11-20-2004 10:00 PM

"Mother do you think they'll drop the bomb?"

PinkFloyd 11-20-2004 10:08 PM

"Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day" - Time

or

"You've got to be crazy" - Dogs

I don't know.

DeusExMachina 11-20-2004 10:12 PM

One of these days, I'm going to rip you into little pieces.

Riva 11-20-2004 10:15 PM

I defenitely agree on 'Time" as being one of the best.

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an off-hand way

Or

Good Bye Blue Sky

Look, Mummy. There's an airplane up in the sky.

DeusExMachina 11-20-2004 10:18 PM

Slightly off topic, but I missed it, so, does anyone know which five songs went through the poll in round 1?

Permanent Solution 11-20-2004 10:19 PM

Metallica-Fade To Black
Tool-Sober
Iron Maiden-Fear Of The Dark
Led Zeppelin-Black Dog
Jimi Hendrix-Little Wing

Otherside 11-20-2004 10:27 PM

Yay for Metallica.

Riva 11-20-2004 10:30 PM

Yay for Led Zep.

  !RETURN TO TOPIC NOW! :p

manuscriptreplica 11-21-2004 02:46 AM

You're all wrong, the best opening lyric is Astronomy Domine 'Lime and limpid green, a second scene/A fight between the blue you once knew" It also happens to be one of their best songs

Lyrics I don't understand scare me. :(

Riva 11-21-2004 05:42 AM

Anyways, we can make it best closing lines as well.

In which case it has to be "Time", hands down.

"The time has come, the song is over, thought I'd something more to say......."

lunch998 11-21-2004 07:45 AM

I like the end of the Trial or the end of Outside the Wall.

halfdeadhippo 11-21-2004 10:32 AM

Time, as previously mentioned, as well as:

Hey You: "Together we stand, divided we fall."
Sheep: "Get out of the road if you want to grow old."
When the Tigers Broke Free: "...And that's how the High Command took my daddy from me."

Plus more that I can't think of right now.

DeusExMachina 11-21-2004 10:38 AM

Running over the same old grounds, what have we found? the same old fears... Wish you were here.

BludgeonySteve 11-21-2004 10:49 AM

I just got meddle. :D

Broken Arrow 11-21-2004 11:16 AM
I got that 5th of the Floyd albums I own, and really like it. I think Echoes is possibly a bit over-hyped, as it's really long, quite good, but nothing all that special. The rest of the album more than lives up to what people say about it though, and it flows really well (as usual for them).
I agree Meddle flows excellently. One of these Days was the first Floyd song I ever heard.:D
