Exercises that use all your fingers. I think.
eg. D-------------------1-2-3-4 A----------1-2-3-4--------- E-1-2-3-4------------------ etc Look around in the lessons section and there'll no doubt be stuff on building speed and the like.
ok then thanks for that |
well you sound like you don't know theory so i'll explain it the easiest way. A chromatic scale would include every note or fret on the fretboard so to practice using chromatics start anywhere on the fret board and play each finger consecutively one after another. Alternatively start at the first fret 1 2 3 4 on the low E string then the next string, the A string and up to the high e string and then move the first finger to the second fret and descend. This was the routine i ued evertime i picked up a guitar when i first strated out.
|
Chromatics are only helpfull for building strength and speed. There not really gonna help you with soloing that much.

hey thanks for that. i will practice up |
You're right they aren't that useful. Check out Flight of the Bumblebee by Petrucci though. A fair bit of that is chromatics.
|
1234 on every string isn't even fully chromatic, it's half.
The chromatic scale starting on A would be: E---------------------------------------------------1-2-3-4-5---- B-----------------------------------------2-3-4-5---------------- G-------------------------------2-3-4-5-------------------------- D---------------------3-4-5-6------------------------------------ A-----------4-5-6-7---------------------------------------------- E-5-6-7-8-------------------------------------------------------- ...Just incase some of you didn't know, although that one would be harder to play fast. |
I don't care for chromatics, except maybe for warming up. If you honestly want good finger independence, take piano lessons! There's nothing better for your finger control than piano, in my opinion.
|
I doa lot of scales and chromatics, and it's amazing how quickly your fingers can speed up just by doing chromatic stuff daily.
Unfortunately, school hit me hard this year, and I've been seriously reduced in my practice time. :( |
If you want a workout try this:
E||----------------------13--17--13------------------| B||------------------15--------------15--------------| G||--------------14----------------------14----------| D||----------15------------------------------15------| A||--12--17--------------------------------------17--| E||--------------------------------------------------| ------------------13--17-T22--17--13-T22--18--13--| --------------15----------------------------------| ----------14--------------------------------------| ------15------------------------------------------| --17----------------------------------------------| --------------------------------------------------| -T22--18--13-T22--18--13--12--------|| ------------------------------------|| ------------------------------------|| ------------------------------------|| ------------------------------------|| ------------------------------------|| |
i haven't learnt the whole song yet, but i too have problems with the beginning.
i always use my pinky; i.a.w.: i use all four fingers
I can play the whole thing perfectly (along with the cd) It's just the first part of the solo I have trouble fingering I also use all my fingers on the intro riff |
I've leant all of Bed of Razors (finally)
Does anyone else have trouble with the beginging of the solo? What fingers do you use?
If you mean the bends, then this what I do: I hold the bends on the14th fret with my 2+3 fingers and fret the 12s with my 1. The rest of the solo is a piece of cake. |
Okay thanks man that helps. The solo is really easy. I was just having trouble with that one part
|
Record it.
|
Bed of Razors? You need proof to believe that he can play that?
|
I always thought the guitar pro tab was funny because the bridge was tabbed like this:
D||------------------12--15--19--15--12--------------| A||--------------13----------------------13----------| F||----------12------------------------------12------| C||------14--------------------------------------14--| G||--15----------------------------------------------| D||--------------------------------------------------| ---------------7--10--14--10--7-----------| ------------8--------------------8--------| ---------7--------------------------7-----| ------9--------------------------------9--| --10--------------------------------------| ------------------------------------------| ------------------12--15--19--15--12----------15--|| --------------13----------------------13--12------|| ----------12--------------------------------------|| ------14------------------------------------------|| --15----------------------------------------------|| --------------------------------------------------|| Who taps the 14th fret when you can just re-errange them to six-string arpeggios? :lol: |
I should learn that song. It's pathetically easy for a CoB song, solo and all.
Fools and their powertabs. When I use tabs, I do it myself. \m/ |
I should learn that song. It's pathetically easy for a CoB song, solo and all.
Yeah, it's by far the easiest. Can anyone here play silent night bodom night? Meh, I can't be bothered to tab all the songs I want to learn. I have two excellent summoning tabson metaltabs.com though. |

Fools and their powertabs. When I use tabs, I do it myself. \m/
Amen. Well, that's partly because I can't use powertabs. |

Fools and their powertabs. When I use tabs, I do it myself. \m/
Yes it is easy for a CoB song... I can play allmost all of it and I suck. |
I can't play it, only because I haven't taken the time to learn. I'm in the mood to re-learn Kissing the Shadows, but I had it down pretty well over a year ago, so I'm a little out of practice in that song now. Anyhoo, before I learn any CoB, I'm in the mood to learn some great riffs. :)
Because as we all know, kickass heavy riffs are more metal then lead-based stuff. \m/ lawl |
Ben, how long have you been playing?
|
Two years. I'm quite dissatisfied, but nobody's perfect I guess.
|
I'm sure your better than I am, and I have been playing allmost three years... I think
|
Bed of Razors? You need proof to believe that he can play that?
Yes actually. |
Yes actually.
Why, it's triplets at 142, that's not insane... Now if this were the Winter Madness solo we were talking about then I'd want proof. ShadowsFallen:All of Kissing the Shadows or just the bridge? |
Pffffft, Wintersun...
I mean everything except the solos.
I'm sure your better than I am, and I have been playing allmost three years... I think
Meh, everyone has their strengths. In some ways I'm better then people I know who have played 5 years, and in other ways there are 1 year players better then me. We've never even met anyway, so there's no way for us to know. :) Gah, I truly hate when people post recordings to whore how good they are. |
Pffffft, Wintersun...

I dislike Wintersun. The shredder doesn't make up for the lack of writing talent.
|
I heard the band is all one guy, with no programming.. it's a pretty good album. A lot of repetition.
|

I have just been stuck in this rut I'm in for the last six to eight months, and I haven't really improved much... I need lessons :upset: |

Are you kidding me!?! Lack of writing talent?!? I think I've argued with you about this before but CoB is predictable and sometimes plain lame Wintersun is completely full of variety. O well... no point in arguing all over again. |
I'm going to agree with you on the fact that Wintersun have writing talent... but you can't say that CoB aren't very talented.
Never said CoB aren't talented... songs like Silent Night Bodom Night, Towards Dead End are awesome, but the have some boring/lame songs too. |

O well... no point in arguing all over again.
Have we argued this before? I don't recall. Wintersun to me simply sounds like Norther with folk elements. The melodies Jaari writes sounds exactly like Norther, and often sounds like very generic power metal lead guitar. It fails to grab my attention because of lack of variety. So basically, I think Bodom is nothing but variety and Wintersun is very monotonous. We're opposites on this, so I guess there's no point in arguing. :p
Yeah, I guess you're right... I haven't been able to do much of anything with guitar the past months, because my practice time has been so low. I was down to maybe a couple hours per week. :( Now that I'm off for Christmas I'm going to work back into my usual rigorous practice schedule and hopefully make some serious progress. My goal is to be shredding by the time I hit the three year mark, hopefully that's not too ambitious. Any improvement at this time will be well recieved since it's been so slow lately. :upset: |
Never said CoB aren't talented... songs like Silent Night Bodom Night, Towards Dead End are awesome, but the have some boring/lame songs too.
Yeah, I guess. Everyone is entilted to their own opinion, But I like allmost all of CoBs songs... just some not as much as others. |
Anyway you know who has the coolest, longest, craziest solos in metal?
Dragonforce! |
Just wondering, how will you know when you can shred? I have trouble setting goals.
To Silenius: Dream Theater, sorry. |
ONLY FOOLS DON'T LISTEN TO DRAGONFORCE!
|
I guess I'm a fool :upset:
I have never really listened to Dragonforce. I have only heard one song... I think |
Just wondering, how will you know when you can shred? I have trouble setting goals.
To Silenius: Dream Theater, sorry.
Bah Dream Theater is boring... Shred=Sweeping, tapping, speed picking and combinations of all those techniques. (And loads of cool whammy bar/harmonic tricks.) |
