Well the other day ThievesandBastards' white pants reminded me that I was going to tie-dye some all white corduroys. Today, they are finished, and look very strange.

How do you tiedye?
That is pretty damn cool.

There are many ways to go about tie-dying, but my mom and I have pretty much stuck to the same way.

First of all how to get the patterns. To get the classic and most well known pattern, the swirl, you lay out the fabric, and then twist it from the center. When you have it all rolled up, wrap it up with rubberbands (3 or 4 should be good).

To get a striped pattern, fold the fabric in a pleated pattern. Then put rubberbands on it to hold it in place. The rubberbands will be used to separate the colors in your tie-dye.

To get a pattern like I did on those pants, think of it this way. Each one of those circles represents a rubberband. It's kind of difficult to explain without visuals (as a lot of this is), but just try to picture it. You just bunch up sections of the cloth, and rubberband them. the rubberbands separate the colors.

Now the old way to dye them is to dip the bunched up clothes completely in dye (like coloring easter eggs), but I don't exactly know how that works. Honestly, you 'd have to ask someone else.

The way that I dye items is that we have bottles (they look like resuraunt ketchup and mustard bottles kind of) that we have the different colors in. We basically just pour the color onto the fabric where we want it to be.

But before you dye any fabric, you need to soak the fabric in soda ash (this is after you roll it up), so that the dye will stay. a gallon of water and two cups of soda ash is what I think we use, and let the fabric soak in that for 20 minutes.

Then you dye the fabric.

There are different types of dye. If you ever see some tie-dye that is really light and faded, it's because they likely used rit dye. Stay away from rit, it sucks. We buy our dye from http://www.dharmatrading.com/
Which is a site that can also probably give you better instructions on tie-dying.

When you're done dying, wrap up the item in a plastic bag and let it sit for 24 hours. I've also read that 12 hours should be good, but I always just wait 24.

After the 24 hours, put the item under running water and take off the rubber bands. rinse until the water coming out of the cloth is clear. Then put in the washer and drier (or air dry).

Like I said, if you're really interested in differet ways to tie-dye, look on the dharma trading site. I did my best to explain, but it's hard to do without visuals.

I've been tie-dying to the purpose of selling for about 5 years now.

Edit: some things I forgot to mention:
Your best fabric choice is 100% cotton. Hemp works as well, but is more expensive. I say stick with 100% cotton, and your clothes will turn out great.

When rubberbanding your clothes, it's good to have them a little bit damp first. It makes the clothes a lot easier to mold.

Rubber gloves and plastic is a good investment. We have part of an old shower curtain that we put on our table, so that the dye doesn't stain it. Plus the dye can stain your hands, so gloves come in handy (get it?).

Don't be pissed if your first attempt sucks. It takes lots of experimentation.

Sorry about the incredibly long post.

How does one sell tie-dyed clothing and does it make good money?

My mom and I go to local artist markets and craft markets and sell. Booth fees can be really cheap, or nothing at all, and depending on the amount of product, we can get a pretty good amount of money. Also, we price our clothes really cheaply, as we use clothes from GoodWill. Affordable tie-dye sells.

Is that so?

Well, I think he may have posted in here once, but, you know, he wasn't going to make a habit of being a regular poster.

A guy at my uni has a beard just like that.

I made a leftover crack stencil out of the vynil layer of an old mousepad and used it with spraypaint on my (reasonably) new skateboard deck. Ill post a picture or two when i figure out how to...would anyone know a way to make sure the paint doesnt bleed under the stencil at all? I didnt realise how long it would take to cut all the letters out too

here we go...what do you guys think?:

mullets suk 07-17-2006 05:30 AM

Real nice work, and yes lettering is a pain the arse. As for the bledding though, im not sure ive never used the viynal thing your doing.(if that makes any diffrence) if it doesnt then i just hope for the best.

what do you use? i was thinking overhead projector sheets...if you use something that isnt sticky on one side, how do u keep it from lifting off what you want to spray onto? ps. i copied the letters freehand when i drew the trace

coheneran 07-17-2006 05:54 AM

I use tape, but the best thing is a pair of rubber gloves and just holding it down while you spray.

I use freezerpaper which sticks down on one side, best method i think. If u dont want something to lift up when u spay i would just hold it down. also i dont use sprays. I have to brush on the paint. it takes a little more efoort but i have more control.

yeah, i used oil pastel over a stencil on my griptape before which worked REALLY well (it doesnt rub off when your skating and it doesnt make your griptape slippery), the control you get with non-spray stuff is good...but i really wanted that spraycan look. Ill definately try the freezerpaper next time, thanks.

Thats sweet i know all about those markets cause my gram sells spice and herb mixtures there like for recipes. Kind of a wierd idea but it sells really well surprisingly.

i have never used viynal but skateboard are hard becuse of the concave but if you put little rocks around what you cut out and spray from like 8 inches back in small brusts to avoid putting too much paint down that should help to get ride of underspray most of the time i do not follow this and spray way to much paint down so it bleeds and **** up my ****
