IheartSP 12-18-2005 07:09 PM

I'm going to practice the Silent Night, Bodom Night solo and post that this week

MRDuCran 12-18-2005 07:35 PM

Noooooooooooooooooooo not that song. It just as good as the others but DAMMM is it overplayed/overmentioned. :upset:

Warheart, Towards Dead End, Children of Bodom, Downfall, Lake Bodom, Chokehold, Black Widow would satisfy me more at least.

Top 5 whored songs:

1. SIlent Night, Bodom Night
2. Bed of Razors
3. Needled 24/7
4. Hate Me
5. Kissing the Shadows.

I look at stuff like this and try to avoid doing what other people do because I like to be different.

But anyway, I look forward to hearing it, don't listen what I just said...

IheartSP 12-18-2005 08:00 PM

Well I happen to know it already...

MRDuCran 12-19-2005 04:57 PM

Fair enough.

Shadows 12-19-2005 05:32 PM

I'd rather play what I like and not what other people find obscure.

I should learn some CoB songs, but they're not high on my priority list.

Actually, since the topic came up and I've got time off from school, I feel like re-learning Kissing the Shadows. That song is so fun to play.

MRDuCran 12-19-2005 06:24 PM

Oh, Kissing the Shadows is another overrated song IMO just because of the sweep picking in the solo. I don't think the actual song comes close to being one of their best, but I'm the only person that thinks that so whatever.

Shadows 12-19-2005 06:26 PM

Even without the insanity of the solos I would still think it's one of their best.

But to balance it out, I'm one of the few who really really loves Something Wild. :(

MRDuCran 12-19-2005 06:31 PM

Yeah I guess you are. I listened to some of the songs on there and you can really notice the difference in Alexi's playing over the years. Plus I wasn't digging the songs too much either. Except Lake Bodom, I love that one.

Shadows 12-19-2005 06:32 PM

I love all of them. The only single moment I dislike on that album is the opening punk riff to The Nail. Other then that, it's my favorite album along with Follow the Reaper.

MRDuCran 12-19-2005 06:42 PM

I don't think I can really comment accurately because I haven't listened to them all properly like I have done with Hatebreeder and Hate Crew Deathroll but I will do when I get it, whenever that is...

ALSO

I've seen a live video of CoB playing Downfall live in Tuska 2004 and apparantly it's avaliable on DVD with a whole bunch of other songs, anyone know where to purchase it? OR the In Your Face DVD single??

AND

I just downloaded the Deadnight Warrior video for the first time ever, Alexi has a goatee in it...cool.

The Sandman 12-19-2005 07:00 PM

I can't seem to find any Children of Bodom dvd's. Maybe I should try just buying them online.

I really should learn some more Bodom songs. Or at least solos. I usually just have to move the solos down 1 step so I don't have to go out of standard.

I can play the interlude/2nd solo in Sixpounder (the only part of that song I really like) to some degree, the solo in Needled 24/7.

...

So really not many. I'm going to try and get around to learning the Hate Me! and the Kissing the Shadows solo. Over-rated or not, they're still amazing.

State which CoB songs you can play...

Shadows 12-19-2005 07:08 PM

I can't play any. Playing songs by bands I listen to doesn't interest me nearly as much as others, but I like to play odd riffs and whatnot.

I like The Nail. :p

I love Something Wild, but it's not their best.

Touch like Angel of Death is the best. Second would be Lake Bodom.

To join in the overated CoB songs to be learned on guitar topic.

I play up to the chorus on Needled 24 7 including intro solo. I love playing that lead riff.
I'm working on In Flames's The Quiet Place as of right now.

Britton 12-19-2005 10:34 PM

I've leant all of Bed of Razors (finally)

Does anyone else have trouble with the beginging of the solo?

What fingers do you use?

blue3 12-19-2005 10:35 PM

I've never tried learning that song. I should.. sometime.

Apocalyptic Raids 12-20-2005 01:02 AM

Something Wild is probably my favourite Bodom album.

i haven't learnt the whole song yet, but i too have problems with the beginning.

i always use my pinky; i.a.w.: i use all four fingers

PsychoticFlubber 12-20-2005 01:46 PM

Chokehold is a very fun song to learn. I don't find it to be as difficult as their others. Besides, most of it is easy to play CORRECTLY because of Alexi's Young Guitar DVD thing, which shows alot of the riffs and stuff. Besides, if anyone reads Guitar World, Alexi had a column in that, which showed how to play basicly everything. I believe one song that should be tabbed out correctly is... nevermind... I think all of HCDR should be, just because I see so many mistakes on what is already available for it. I would do it myself, although I have a really bad ear. All I have fixed for myself was the riffs to Sixpounder.

Toaster 12-20-2005 02:23 PM

Yeah, the palm muted part of the Chokehold lead is so fun to play.. it's like a riff, but also like a solo. The keyboard/guitar harmony part is tough.

MRDuCran 12-20-2005 04:15 PM

I love hokehold too, I played it this morning before I went to work.

I think I can play about 80% of the songs on each album by Bodom, I completely whore them. I don't learn the solos if I can't play the solos perfectly just incase I build up sloppy technique at that specific thing.

I can play the rhythms of:

Lake Bodom
Warheart
Silent Night, Bodom Night
Bed of Razors
Towards Dead End
Black Widow
Children of Bodom
Downfall
Bodom After Midnight
Everytime I Die
Hate Me
Needled 24/7
Sixpounder
Chokehold
Bodom Beach Terror
Hate Crew Deathroll
Living Dead Beat
Are You Dead Yet
In Your Face

lol im sad :)

Shadows 12-20-2005 04:35 PM

I've tried learning several odd rhythm guitar parts off of CoB songs and they don't seem hard. With a band like this I'd much rather jump right to soloing, but I'm not quite a shredder.

But I'm close. \m/

Time to learn me up some cunt-smashing Shadows Fall riffs!

I (heart) both of these bands!

PsychoticFlubber 12-20-2005 04:36 PM

Yeah, Bodom Beach Terror is fun too! Although, I suck, and can't play solos. I am not fast enough I guess. I am still trying my best to build up speed, but I am not sure how. I can do easy sweep licks... I suck at legato. I can trem pick fast as hell, but my fingers don't move nearly as fast It's all too sloppy. Especially when after almost 4 years of playing, I am just learning to use my pinky.

MRDuCran 12-20-2005 04:46 PM

I think Bodoms stuff is actually tricky to get perfect, and I always compare myself with the cd, meaning it's very tough trying to play things exactly like Alexi, and to be honest, I don't think many people would be able to do it. I've never heard any decent recordings of Bodom songs so I guess that means most other people find them hard too...

Toaster 12-20-2005 05:08 PM

Time for me to cover a Bodom song and post it here?

blue3 12-20-2005 05:14 PM
Time for me to cover a Bodom song and post it here?
Yeah sure?

Mr. Squiggles 12-20-2005 05:21 PM

I need to finish my Children of Decadence cover...

The Sandman 12-20-2005 05:27 PM

Hmm...Ok. A question.

In the Hate Me! solo during the first run there's a part that looks like...

E---17-18-20-22--
B-------------------

Should you play that with all four fingers or should you be cheap and play the A on the 22nd fret on B. I tried doing it with all four fingers and it's kind of tough but all I'd need to do would be to practice it.

Can anyone here play that solo? If so how do you play that part. Even if you can't you can still give advice.

It dosen't really matter how you play it... as long as it's the right note... unless you wan't to be exatacly like Alexi, then you would have to figure out how he plays it. But I mean whatever is the most comfortable.

At least in my opinion

The Sandman 12-20-2005 05:36 PM

I would have just done what was comfortable but I think it'd be good to get practice at using all four fingers. I'll see how hard it is to play with all four fingers around the correct speed after practising it for a while.

Toaster 12-20-2005 05:38 PM

Generally no one can play too well with all four fingers on one string. It's highly likely Alexi either uses two strings like you said, or he slides up with his ring/pinkie finger.

I also have no idea which run you're talking about.. what's the play time at the point of that run?

PsychoticFlubber 12-20-2005 05:40 PM

Yeah, it doesn't matter as long as you're hitting the right note. But in my opinion, you should try to use four fingers, because if you practice it and you perfect it, than it will just mean you have improved. But, what's comfortable is good too.

I play almost everything with three fingers... I only use my pinkie if I really have to...

Some people say that's sloppy but I think if it sounds great and is comfertable to play... Then it works.

roulette dares 3 12-21-2005 01:50 AM

well in my opinoin if I may...you should practice chromatics up and down the fretboard starting slowly and faster as each of your fingers become more independant. Most people find it hard to to use the pinkey because i think it shares the same muscle to some degree with the third finger (ring) so practicing using chromatics can help develope the pinkys independeence. I use to practice chromatics everytime i pick up the guitar and it helped a lot. You should also try chromatic triplets and other sequences. This is what helped me.

I should really check into that.

Apocalyptic Raids 12-21-2005 03:00 AM

Chromatics bore the fuck out of me. Same with other exercises like that.

I just pick up the guitar and play riffs and solos or something.

roulette dares 3 12-21-2005 03:28 AM

Well if that works for you. People shouldn't start playing super fast solos if they don't have the technical abilities yet. Playing fast is cool but playing sloppy will not impress anyone. I remeber when i started out playing i thought the end solo to mr.crowly by randy rhoads was the coolest and i learnt to play it. But it sounded **** and sloppy and that wasn't going to impress anyone. After about 1 month of chromtaics i nailed that solo. just a bit of inspiration...

The Sandman 12-21-2005 03:31 AM

I go through periods where I'll spend 30-60 minutes doing chromatics with a metronome. It's the holidays now so I'm starting to get back into my routine.

And yes, chromatics do help you get fast.

Aaron_Of_Oz 12-21-2005 03:39 AM

children of bodom are a really good band!! i have bestbreeder and half of hate crew deathroll and are you dead yet? what are their best albums and i will get them?

what are chromatics? because i am trying to get faster at the moment

The Sandman 12-21-2005 03:57 AM

Exercises that use all your fingers. I think.

eg.

D-------------------1-2-3-4
A----------1-2-3-4---------
E-1-2-3-4------------------ etc

Look around in the lessons section and there'll no doubt be stuff on building speed and the like.
