Well, I finally managed to get enough cash together to pick up Ghost Reveries yesterday. It's pretty much what I expected after seeing so much talk of it around here. It seems to be missing something that Still Life etc had, but it's good nevertheless. I'm also not sure if I like the Keyboards yet either. This was a pretty directionless post really.

Also, I just managed to get the video for The Grand Conjuration, so if anyone wants it, post your email in your next post.

I was unaware they did a video for it...here's my email:
Just got back from the LA/Hollywood show and it was great! It was my first opeth show so I didn't know what to expect, but Mikael is a really cool guy. He interacts really well with the crowds and gets them going.

The setlist was sweet:

The Baying of the Hounds (my favorite)
When
Bleak
In my time of need
The Grand Conjuration
The Moor
Deliverance
Blackwater Park
Demon of the Fall (encore)

- It was sweet how they left after blackwater park and nobody left, then they came out and jammed to DOTF. I realized blackwater park sounds great live and the double bass is really long compared to most of their songs. Baying of the hounds was my favorite out of the tracks, but I couldn't hear Per during the beautiful chorus in the middle of the song (my favorite part of the entire cd). It was still good to hear the song and the ending was sweet with the double bass thumping the entire venue.

- There was cool drum solo by Axenrot (replacement drummer), and I think he was doing blast beats at one point

- The also jammed to Michael Jackson with Axenrot on drums and Mendez doing bass, lol
Yeah Martin Axenrot busted out some pretty serious blast beats as his solo wound down.
You forgot to mention to the musical lesson Mikael gave and that little No Quarter jam they did.
How long did you have to wait for your car man? People were there for like 90 minutes. The valets were the least professional I've ever seen them for all the shows I've been to at that venue.

No Quarter as in the Zeppelin song?
That's awesome. That's one of my favorite Zep songs and definitely the most Opeth-esque Zep songs (in that it creates atmosphere)

The Flabbit Rides High 10-17-2005 12:21 PM

I love on Lamentations where right before To Rid The Diseace, he says

"Just because this song isn't heavy, doesn't make it less evil."

Class.

Triangle 10-17-2005 12:21 PM

Bleak, awesome. One of my fav Opeth tracks.
As far as I know, it wasn't Gene on the set the other night.....didn't recognize the bands the drummer was from, but it certainly wasn't SYL or Death. Some guy with long blonde hair.

For the record, I think Hoglan is even sicker drummer than Martin.....the drumming on the last SYL album is my favorite in a while.
Hoglan is the greatest walrus ever.

Seriously. The dude's probably as big as his drumset in SYL's live DVD.

Never heard a drummer like him before though...goddam brilliant. One of the best.

Yeah, everyone came back out on stage for the encore and Per just started playing it on the keyboard and then Axenrot picked it up and then Mendez. They were just playing it as background music while Mikael talked.

That's totally sweet. I would love if Opeth did a full cover of that song, now that they have a keyboard player.

SKoRioN 10-17-2005 03:06 PM

Let me just say, my eyes have been opened.
I used to whore bands like Metallica and would go on about how good they are, how great musicians they are etc. Now don't get me wrong, I still like them and think they are good musicians (well, used to be) but recently I discovered Opeth.....recently I discovered pure bliss.....

After listening to only a few songs I can say my views on music have been changed significantly. That and the fact I want Mikael's babies but that's beside the point....

Anywho, just wanted to say hello as this is my first post in this humble thread. Please don't bully meh :(

Cheers guys ;)

Shattered_Future 10-17-2005 03:09 PM

With a post like that, why would we bully you?

Welcome as well. :)

Did you actually get a setlist? Or did you remember the songs? 'Coz that set is class. I'm seeing Opeth on 28 Nov. :thumb:

Shattered_Future 10-17-2005 04:45 PM

Where's The Leper Affinity?

And replace In My Time Of Need with Windowpane, and that will be an awesomely outrageous setlist.

strat 10-17-2005 04:48 PM
Same exact setlist as S.F.....are they known for doing same songs throughout a tour?
From what I remember of their last tour, they play pretty much identical sets from show to show....so this should be the show we get as well.

Toaster 10-17-2005 04:48 PM
Same exact setlist as S.F.....are they known for doing same songs throughout a tour?
Wow, that's the heaviest set I have ever heard of Opeth touring with. Every time I've seen them they always have encored with Demon of the Fall, which is awesome.

Looks like they dropped Leper in favor of Bleak. Love both songs, but I'm so glad they're playing Bleak. Would I be wrong saying before this tour they never played Bleak live?

ok lateralus 10-17-2005 04:48 PM
Its one of their best, IMO.
Yeah, well the main complaint i have is that the title track is unmemorable. But i should listen to it more i guess. I used to not care for Orchid too, then I listened to it a lot, now I love it
