Yeah i went through and skim listened it for my second post...

Do you like SFAM? and 6 degrees?

I like SFAM but couldnt get into 6 degrees, and don't really know what to look fro next, I'm thinking when dream and day unite 'cause the YTSE Jam kicks some arse..

freaks_refuge 04-24-2005 03:44 PM
Why do people talk down about John Petrucci all the time? I go to the guitar forum sometimes for ****s and there's almost always some random Petrucci joke.
Because NO-ONE should have their guitar that high :P
And I dont like him because I think he's really over-rated, is too much of a show-off and I really dont like Dream Theater. He has no real feeling to his playing.
And for someone who I've seen play chromatic scales without looking, he was concentrating an awful lot on their master of puppets cover. But I dont really like Metallica too much either.

I think SFAM is overrated personally. The story is good, and the songs are good, but I just can't get into it. It's mostly too soft for my taste. That being said, I really like "Fatal Tragedy", "Beyond This Life", "Home" and "The Dance of Eternity"

6 Degrees...well. I love "The Glass Prison", "Blind Faith" and "The Great Debate" on disc one, I don't care for "Misunderstood" or "Disappear".

The song "6 Degrees" is ok, but I wasn't that impressed with it really, as a whole. A couple of the parts, such as "War Inside my Head" and "The Test That Stumped Them All" I like, but overall, meh.

ToT > Awake IMO.

clearvision 04-24-2005 03:50 PM

I will check ToT out on your reccomendation. I think my main problem with awake is the fact it's so darn long, and i wanna move onto a different album after about 40mins.

Dried Muffin Remnants 04-24-2005 03:51 PM
What's wrong with that then?
He shreds WAYY too much. You don't have to show off your talent that much. IMO More often, he should be more restrained and should crescendo into more of his shredding/solos.

ToT's Tracklisting:

1) As I Am (7:47)
2) This Dying Soul (11:27)
3) Endless Sacrifice (11:24)
4) Honor Thy Father (10:04)
5) Vacant (2:51)
6) Stream of Consciousness [Instrumental] (11:16)
7) In the Name of God (14:14)

...So if you hate long songs, you might not like this album :p

Huber 04-24-2005 03:55 PM

I guess I'm not enough of a guitarist for that too annoy me much.

Adam Jones is GOD 04-24-2005 03:56 PM

Headphones working, first listen: its a grower.

Didnt hook me as quickly as TGP, and has fewever changes for me, but still was cool and parts I cna pick out as cool.

Yeah, it didn't hook me like TGP did either.

But it will grow on you, I guarantee it

I love the transition from Mirror to Lie

Adam Jones is GOD 04-24-2005 03:58 PM

Well I have no clue where the transition took place. Maybe due to you placing them together too well. :p

Oh well, once I buy the album, ill know

The long Bb to B bend that Petrucci did before they started a new chugging riff. The chugging riff is the beginning to Lie.

clearvision 04-24-2005 04:04 PM

You have Perfect Pitch? Or just studied the tabs? I have the worst pitch ever, sometimes i'm ok, others I'm well off, depends on the day :(

Sounds like ToT is epic too, will have to check it out though..

Well, I have MIDI files of said songs, and with my composition program, can see said songs in standard notation. So I know what notes they're playing :p

clearvision 04-24-2005 04:09 PM

Oh, I was very jelous of you for a little moment there. I keep meaning to learn some stuff on piano, like wait for sleep and the solo off take the time...But i always forget about it...i will print off the music this week. /Objective.

I really just dont like james labrie and his 80's power metal style vocals. I like all of the music. John pettrucci is my second fav guitar player (guess who's first), and Ive always disagreed with those who say he doesn't play 'with emotion' (whatever the hell that means). He is very melodic, and his playing can send chills up my spine, (not just his solos, the long riff near the end of Universal mind still gives me goosebumps).

As for dt's records, my fav will always and forever be ACOS. Its pretty much perfect. Even the live tunes sound incredible. The cover of perfect strangers is killer (ive never even heard the original). I loved every part of SFAM except for the vocal/storyline, which I though was kinda lame and nothing to do with Metropolis pt.1. I didn't get into 6degrees too much, there were a good couple of tunes, (along with a straight up Toolism in The Great Debate.) I&W I will always like cuz it was my first DT record. Awake is good, I thought Space Dye Vest was a great song from that record. Yea innocence faded was kinda lame except for the end jam. And Scarred is a really good tune. ToT is at the bottum of my list. I love heavy stuff, but it sounded like DT was 'trying to hard', if you know what I mean. I didn't appreciate the blatant Mustane/Hetfeild vocal imitation, nor the 'phone rap'. JP's solo record is really good, like Liquid Tensiony good, (cept no Levin :upset: )

They should have never gotten rid of Kevin Moore. If you havent heard it, find OSI, its Kevin Moore, Portnoy and one of the guys from fates warning. It's like a mesh of Pink Floyd and Tool. If Kevin stayed with the band, I think they'd be better off (more creative) than with Rudess.

and Not to forget Liquid Tension. If you don't have it get it...

The JoZ 04-24-2005 04:33 PM

Bwahahah

That wasn't even a race :p

44% downloaded.

I think you won the race event. now for endurance of songs, and overall quality.

Well, I don't think you can compare Awake and I&W fully, cause I only sent you two songs :o

Huber 04-24-2005 04:52 PM

What do you guys think of Incubus? They would be a decent supporter for Tool.

Daven 04-24-2005 05:01 PM

maybe

stream of consciousness, this dying soul nad as i am are great. What are your opinions of 6 degrees of inner turbulence. I think is really good, but very calmed IMO

Daven 04-24-2005 05:17 PM

is saliva a "whole" cd like lateralus or its like opiate(really short, like a demo)?

btw, sorry for triple posting

Huber 04-24-2005 05:18 PM

Salival had a few new pieces of material, but it is mostly live tracks. It also has all there videos if I recall.

Edit: The live tracks are amazing IMO, and in most cases better than the studio versions though. Just in case the idea of live tracks isn't worth buying to you.

Kage 04-24-2005 05:21 PM

It's SalivaL and, no, it's not a full album. It's got a cover (or two?) and some unreleased songs as well as live material.

EDIT: Sliptallica beat me to it.

Dried Muffin Remnants 04-24-2005 05:22 PM

It has all of their music videos pre-2000?

Edit: No Quarter is the best track on there IMO.

Will you people stop talking about Dream Theater? There's already an official DT thread, so go post it over there. I don't mean to sound like a prick, but it's really off topic.

Huber 04-24-2005 05:23 PM
It has all of their music videos pre-2000?
Yeah, I'm pretty sure.

Daven 04-24-2005 05:24 PM

oh thanx to both, sorry for not spelling it right. The real material is awesome.
