And it really gets to me :(

That's a shame. I'd love to hear it.
Why aren't you staying up till 1:30? It's not THAT late. :)

Anyways, for anyone that cares, I'll be playing:

Learning to Live for I&W
Scarred for Awake
Peruvian Skies for FII
Dance of Eternity for SFAM
Solitary Shell for 6DIOT Disc 2
The Glass Prison for 6DOIT Disc 1
This Dying Soul for ToT
The Root of All Evil for 8V

In between each song I'll be explaining the history of the band and what they were up to between each album.

I would but the computer's in the kitchen. Right next to where my dad sleeps.

Your dad sleeps in the kitchen?

He sleeps in the Living room (long story) and I can't exactly hide in the cupboards. My house's walls are paper thin. You can hear everything in the next room.

Looks like a great list, except This Dying Soul for ToT. I might listen to it if I can remember to.

Lord Abortion 02-20-2006 03:10 PM

I can't find my copy of FII anywhere...
I have the box, and I was going to listen to it on my stereo, and It wasn't in't box!

Gah...I'm not happy.

Sorry, I know you're a fan of the ballads, but I prefer more of the heavier stuff.
Another factor that was more important, though, was time. I only have an hour and a half.

Oh, and I picked This Dying Soul because I wanted to finish off with the AA suite.

If any of you listen to it, post here and let me know what you think! I'm always open to some constructive criticism.

Lord Abortion 02-20-2006 04:31 PM

The use of solitary shell makes it all better :)

bwnstl 02-20-2006 05:21 PM

Oh god, that song is orgasmic.

nowitzki 02-20-2006 05:27 PM

My favourite part of 6DOIT is probably About To Crash (reprise) and Losing Time. The whole song is incredible though.

I prefer the middle section...From WIMH to solitary shell.

NP: Dream Theater - Beyond this life

Lord Abortion 02-20-2006 05:39 PM

See, DT do that alot for me, hearing a live version makes me really appreciate the song.

The A mind beside itself versions on LSFNY got me into that bit.
The live versions of FII songs made that album more acessable to me
as did the LATB versions of the 6DOIT songs.

I really started to get those songs when I heard live versions

Shattered_Future 02-20-2006 05:42 PM

I did THE single greatest thing last night.

All of you who have A Change Of Seasons, and iTunes with the visualizer, put on the song, and then turn the visualizer on full screen. And just sit and watch it for the whole time the song is on.

It will make you appreciate the music so much more.

Woo, first post in the DT thread.

Ok, so here goes...

I've never been big on DT, I just can't force myself to like LaBrie's vocals. LTE is pretty good though admittedly the wankishness of both bands does edge on me after a lot of listening.

That said, I got my mom into DT awhile ago because I knew she'd like it, and she does, she has all their CDs now. So my parents decided to take the whole family (minus the little one because the show is 16+) to see DT live while I'm home for Spring Break. I love shows and I know I will enjoy it regardless, but for those who have been, what can I expect from it? WIll it be really good? What will they play (so I can d/l and familiarize myself a little better)? Any good or bad concert experiences with them? It's like 2+ hours of just them so it'll be quite the interesting show I hope.

I havent been to any of their shows yet (Im going April first), but I have a few live cds and DVD's.

I cant tell you what they most likely will play because they change the set list every concert. They usually close with Pull Me Under though.

Shattered_Future 02-20-2006 10:57 PM

Dream Theater live...

Don't expect them to interact with the crowd too much...they somewhat just stand there and play their instruments. And move occasionally. That's about it.

However, if you know a lot of their songs by heart, they do play them spot on, and the effect is immense, as many of their songs have that epic feel to them.

They'd be touring in lieu of Octavarium, I'm assuming, so it would be good to familiarize yourself with that.

Others:
Home
The Glass Prison
As I Am
Awake (the album)

Also add Pull Me Under, In the Name of God, Under a Glassmoon and Fatal Tragedy to that list.

Shattered_Future 02-20-2006 11:00 PM

Yea, I didn't know quite a few songs they played at Gigantour...

The ones I DID know, though, I knew by heart. Which made it ridiculously awe-inspiring.

Dude, when you get there, see if there's any empty seats in rows up ahead. When the band starts playing, if they're still empty, fill them! That's how I got from General Admission to row G. If someone comes for the seats just say "oh, I thought these were mine/ours" and move on to some other empty seats.

I can play Silent Man. No shred in that :p

You can guarantee quite a few from Octavarium, they have usually been opening with TROA. They likely will close the set with either Pull Me Under, Metropolis pt.1 or Learning to Live. The set changes every night, but there'll be at least one song from each album.

And I have to say they are the best live band I've ever seen. While they might not run around the stage, the music more then makes up for it, and they usually have a pretty cool video show as well.

Yeah, they'll play alot of stuff from 8VM and then they'll usually encorewith an I&W track and a couple of others or maybe just Octavarium or a change of seasons.

They tend to close with The spirit carries on, in the name of God or similar.

GenuineImitation 02-21-2006 11:16 AM

How many songs do they close with usually?
