Everyone who says that Metallica dies with St Anger should just shut up. They've been around for over 20 years, and in that time they've put out tons of awesome songs and have millions and millions of fans worldwide. St Anger won't take what they did or what they accomplished away. They're still the same people they were in Kill 'em All, Ride The Lightning, and Master of Puppets, just they're style changed. So if you all out there want to listen to something that stays the same, go listen to punk rock.

Why do people consider Metallica's first album punk? Or, better yet, why is thrash considered to be a close cousin of punk? I don't see any comparison.

just cause you dont like their album dosent mean you should lose respect for them. i dont like st.anger that much but metallica have nothing to prove to anybody. and how is their old stuff changed because of st.anger? all their great work in the past more than makes up for it.

Just because they've done good stuff in the past doesn't mean you should disregard the fact that they've put out crap. Thats the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

And any band who has the mentality that "we don't have to prove anything to anybody" has obviously lost touch with reality. A band should be proving themselves with every album they put out.

im not saying they shouldnt be criticized. im saying they deserve respect and also that the st.anger debate is old. we'll just have to wait till their new album comes out to see if they are "getting progressively worse".

i'm listening to Metallica - "Master OF Puppets" at the moment, this has to be my favourite metallica song. i'm not such a great fan of 'tallica but some of their songs are great. such as "for whom the bell tolls" this one, "enter sandman", "nothing else matters", "whiplash" and "ride the lightning"

They've been getting progressively worse since the Black Album.

Lars is probably the most overrated drummer (toss up between him and Dave Grohl), the fact that Metallica still manages to sell records with him behind the kit is a mystery.

i was only kidding about the lars thing, dont think dissing him is gonna bother me. yes st.anger sucks, load and reload are not the brilliant either. but their first four albums are some of the best metal albums ever. maybe they have been going downhill but if they still play the old stuff live im happy.

holy $hit yes. Fade to black has two amazing solos and amazing chord riffs, as does Ride the Lightning, Trapped Under Ice, Fight Fire with Fire, and Call of Ktulu. but dont forget hetfield, he's an amazing guitarist too

who thinks as far as technical ability, is james better than kirk? i've heard from a few people who don't know metallica but they know james is supposedly REALLY good. i don't know though.

James is a very, very solid rythym player, and he writes alot.

Kirk is a decent lead guitarist, but really has to be kicked in the arse to write something decent (this is well documented).

Given the choice, I'd take Hetfield > Hammet in my band any day of the week.

With 343 pages, I'm sure every opinion has been tossed around if ever there were any. I almost feel cliche saying "old Metallica" was better or that they sold out. But then again, cliches are born of some truth. Favourite album would have to be Master of Puppets, followed closely by Ride the lightning and Kill em' All. And Justice for All, in my opinion was there last good album. Not that the Black Album didn't have its finer points, and moments of discernable connection with the Metallica of old.....but it was the downward turning point in my estimation, and lacked the edge. I am a Metallica fan for life just on the basis of what they once were, no amount of wrongly evolved future albums will ever change that.

Toast to Cliff Burton, he brought finesse to thrash metal you guys have to admit.. To live is to die, awesome solos awesome riffs... Yeah I totally agree with lizzy above, I am also a fan for life, but only on what they once were too.

One more thing: The Master of Puppets solo is the most kick *** solo I've ever heard.. And Fade to Black too has a very nice combination of solos..

Kirk dosent write songs,he writes riffs,hetfeild writes all the lyrics

Metallica stopped being metal years and years ago, they doesn't mean they suck or anything, I'm just saying, calling Metallica a "metal" band is no longer true.
