Did some sick screenprinting today :)
First time I'd tried doing the photo-exposure thing I still can't remember what its called, but it worked a treat. I didn't imagine for a second photocopying onto acetate would look so good either, thought it would magically go all lo-res. Picking up my prints tomorrow cos they hadn't dried by the time I left.l RIP Johnny. |
Did more printing today, took photos, messed it up.
So I present the guide of how (not) to screenprint. I mean I only messed up the last layer so whatever. 1) Design your artwork. I prefer to do it in Illustrator or InDesign. And if you know what's good for you, use vector images. I like to design in colour (sorry no pic of what I designed, I might be able to get it tomorrow though). Then photocopy each layer onto an acetate. http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y194/jondz3003/IMGP0226.jpg 2) Coat your screen in emulsion. Didn't get a photo of this. Wait for it to dry sort of, then put it in your light source with the acetate over it. You get this sort of thing. http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y194/jondz3003/IMGP0219.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y194/jondz3003/IMGP0220.jpg 3) mask off the corners of your screen (oops forgot to get a photo of that as well) - basically just cover the edges of the screen that you don't want to print on and aren't covered in emulsion with brown tape. You can see in images 219 and 220 what I mean - see the yellowy borders around the edge by the wood? those have to be sealed away. 4) Set up your table - put down a piece of paper/card (I like to use A3 or A2 paper or actually anything as long as ALL THE PIECES ARE THE SAME SIZE). You can see at the top of 220.jpg bits of masking tape on the table? Those were to show the edges of the card so each piece goes the same place. Also set down your first screen on top of your first piece of card once that's done and use masking tape to mark the edges of the screen on the table - makes for easy registration. 5) Mix yours inks up. I think its something like 60-40 medium-ink, but I'm not certain and I just get my teacher to do it for me at the moment. Also you can see a palette knife, for putting the ink onto the screen, and a squeegee. http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y194/jondz3003/IMGP0222.jpg 6) Make sure your screen and card are still lined up, have some extra card and your drying rack to hand. Dollop on your first lump of ink along one edge of the screen. Scrape it back and forth across the screen with the squeegee a few times - I was doing it 4-8 times yesterday and it worked perfectly. Carefully lift up your screen, get a friend to help you or just put a book or roll of tape under it to balance it, put your card out to dry, put a new piece of card in (remember your guides), and rinse and repeat. 7) You should get something like this. You can do as many layers you want, but for more layers I'd make more prints because like, each extra layer makes the chance of messing up registration greater. If you see what I mean. This is after the second layer. Obviously leave them to dry for a quite a while between layers. http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y194/jondz3003/IMGP0217.jpg 8) This was the first layer I did unsupervised - didn't realise about using a medium when I mixed, thus I messed up the screen, and the card stuck to the screen in part and generally messed up. Luckily I only messed up one yesterday, and this one today, so I have 8 more tries to get it perfect tomorrow :) http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y194/jondz3003/IMGP0223.jpg ALTERNATIVELY obviously some of you won't have access to the emulsion and the lights and stuff, so changes: 1) Make stencils as normal either on news-print or acetate. Downside is its a lot, lots less durable (figure maybe 5 prints absolute maximum probably with the last few being trash), and you'll still have to do bridges. And cut it out by hand. Barely worth it. 2) tape your stencil to the bottom of your screen (wrap the ends of the stencil over the wooden bits in the screen and tape them down) 3) again mask off the edges with brown tape The rest is just the same. I find it harder to register (although these was my first few prints so maybe i was just being bad), and you can't do complex designs: a) because the paper will tear eventually b) because its a pain to cut them out. Look like that Boba Fett guy or whatever
|
Its not loading =/
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y194/jondz3003/IMGP0440.jpg Fixed it :) No bridges, no bleed, not overspray, no guessing if you've sprayed too much, and its reuseable basically forever. And if anything happens to it instead of cutting out another stencil I just expose another screen. Oh, and no cutting. God I love screenprinting. |
I got a bunch of non-matching black dress shoes that they were going to throw away in my band class, any ideas?
|
Throw them away because non matching shoes are gay?
|
why the hell would anyone want non-matching shoes?
just give them to a charity shop man. |
Seriously, and I actually found a couple that go together. I want to do something cool with them.

Speaking of bridges:
http://www.instructables.com/id/E8BGAW39PWERF7FTX6/ Wouldn't work for more intricate designs but still pretty handy if you ask me |
I'd wear the ones that go together and still give the other ones to charity.
I deal with every single one of those problems everytime. Screen printing is starting to sound pretty good...
seriously, seriously go for it. I can design anything (within reason) in InDesign/Illustrator, print a colour proof, print B&W separations, photocopy them to acetate, coat a screen, go for a cigarette & buy a drink - by the time I've come back its ready to print as many times as I can be bothered. I'd say you can go from nothing - printing in maybe 45 minutes, depending on how fast you work in Photoshop. Whereas with stencilling you have to be so careful to design it so it won't fall apart, then it takes aaaaaages to cut it out, and then they always fall apart anyway. |
I'm going to start cutting my own hair, what do I need or need to know?
|
i cut my hair the other week.
heh. bad idea. lol. |
I cut my own bangs...
Generally because there are always a few hairs that get caught up in my 'hawk, and the bangs are longer than the hawk itself. But once it's up with the hairspray I don't feel like picking it apart, so I just cut the ends. My bangs are all uneven and junk, but it looks intentional. |
My mom cuts my hair for me.
But I've never really had a haircut. I get like an inch trimmed off about once a year. |
My friend cuts my hair for me. But he doesn't have to do much because I just get a buzz cut when he does it.
|
I got photo emulsion today. so close yet so far away, from actually doing some screen printing. just need to get photo emulsion remover stuff and ink, i think.
|
you need a light source and stuff as well.
also, you don't even need emulsion remover if you can't be bothered to wipe it off yet, or if you want to do a print a few times. like if you had ink you could coat it up now, do some prints, and leave it till you get remover in 3 weeks or whatever. |
To all those who thought I couldn't do anything cool with those band shoes:

I think if you don't remove the emulsion within a reasonable amount of time it will become practically permanent or very difficult to scrub off. |

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v428/BPMead007/05-03-07_1649.jpg
I don't know man, seeing 'W' then 'Wu-Tang' is pretty badass as a concept, but if I saw it in person it might be a little different. If both shoes had the 'W' on them, it would look all right. |
Reckon this would be too controversial to wear?

Is anything REALLY "too controversial to wear," ever?
Seriously? |
I dunno, I might get lynched or something FOR CONDEMNING TERRORISTS
I have two ideas though - one is to replace the image of Hasib Hussain with Abu Hamza (more iconic, less likely people will think i'm just saying 'throw out the browns' or something because Hussain isn't so recognisable). the other i'll post in a minute, its goooood. |

bahahhahaha |
Hahahaha, nice.
|
i'm halfway through designing a Sid one.
so tempted to just try and copy this though, its so good http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=477058758&size=l |
Why do people like Sid Vicious?
|
Same reason people idolize Darby Crash.
|
Because they're punk as fuck.

That comes off as Muslim-bashing, not many people will understand that that's anti-terrorism. Are you even sure it is? You're giving off some xenophobic vibes. Vibes, have you. |

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y194/jondz3003/stayout.jpg
That could be so easily misunderstood. I wouldn't do it. |
That's a fucking terrible shirt. Why would you even consider wearing it?
|
Yeah I could see how that might not go over too well, unless you feel like stenciling a little disclaimer or something.
