That's way tight. I need to try that.

coheneran 03-28-2007 04:52 AM

That's 'cos it was silkscreened.

jimmy spalding 03-28-2007 09:56 AM

yer silk screening is brilliant, you just have to cut the stencil well, then do the process. theres not much that can go wrong, and you dont get any annoying things like underspray

You don't even have to cut a stencil out. If you get some acetate and photocopy the pic you want onto it in black and white, then you do some exposing-y thing with some bright light, and you can print out anything, no cutting out involved, which means you get cool stuff that's full of "islands". Jonni knows the process properly.

yer true, i've seen that done at school alot, but i dont feel confident enough to try it myself and i don't think that i can do the light thing at home. I'm going to try it for my next art project and then I should be able to do it for tee shirts which will be cool

I'm intersted in doing this instead of cutting stencils out, that way I can do more complicated ones. What is acetate and where do you get it?, and can someone explain or find a website with instructions to do the exposing thing?

Here is some stuff i've done recently with stencils and acrylic paint. They're all patches, apart from the red one which is a t-shirt.

The first one one didn't come out too well, because my cat jumped on it when it was drying and fucked it up.

Those look pretty good. Nice job.

Danger Bird 04-08-2007 07:22 PM

I really like the idea of this stencil but I'm nowhere near happy with the way it looks.

I think the name should be more involved with the picture, if you know what I mean. Right now it looks like a caption contest or something.

:)

I have this elaborate plan for a DIY stage lighting/pyro rig, all controlled by midi footswitches.

how I love having access to a metal & wood workshop whenever I want.

I might take another course at my college when this one finishes just for the facilities.

I really need to try this.

yourstruly 04-10-2007 03:38 AM

thanks for posting that. i'm gonna try it out.

Jon 04-10-2007 04:46 AM

pfft why do that when you have open access to a complete screenprinting studio?

yourstruly 04-10-2007 05:34 PM

who has open access to a screen printing studio?

asdf 04-10-2007 05:48 PM

Jon does.

I got three blank shirts for my birthday, but I don't know what to put on them just yet.

Want to make some stuff for me? :)

sam-a-lam 04-11-2007 12:44 AM

I'm gonna make a pinhole camera tomorrow.

AIRIC 04-11-2007 09:48 AM

Ive made those they're pretty cool.

asdf 04-11-2007 04:46 PM

I made one of those in photography two years ago. I still have it, and hope to use it again someday, although I'm not sure when.

me likes punk 04-11-2007 08:02 PM

What's a pinhole camera?

AIRIC 04-11-2007 08:04 PM

A shoebox that is sealed so it's completely dark. You put a tiny pinhole in the side of the box and cover it with tape. Take the tape off for maybe 30 seconds so a little light filters in and hits the photo paper on the inside. Then you cover the hole back up and develop the paper.

yourstruly 04-12-2007 12:15 AM

how good do the photos come out?

sam-a-lam 04-12-2007 01:40 AM

I made mine out of a gum tin.
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b73/mascara_hero13/diy/IMG_7954.jpg

I also made a panda and a fortune cookie today.

KillCynics 04-12-2007 08:47 PM

Okay i need some help, i got a silk screening kit but i have NO idea how to turn an image into a workable one for a t-shirt. People always say how silk screening allows for complicated designs to be inked on but so far it seems that i can get the same results with a paper stencil, sponge and fabric paint. I wanna turn this image (black and white though) onto a t-shirt. Can someone plllleeease explain how to do this? Thanks.

Google it, that's how I learnt to do it.

But to make that picture black and white, open it with MS paint, and save it as a Monochrome Bitmap image.

or open it with Photoshop (if you have it), then click image, click adjustments, then click de-saturate. then fiddle with the brightness/contrast (which is in the same list as de-saturate)

So I figured out how to turn a photo into a stencil in photoshop.
http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/2568/marknw3.jpg
Original: http://a849.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/64/l_7284882bab93beadb5e33a0d5479c3d0.jpg

Now I'm trying to wrap my head around shadows and multi-layers. Confusing stuff.

lynch_me 04-13-2007 10:02 PM

Is it not just 'threshold' in photoshop?

heyimsheep1 04-13-2007 10:55 PM

WOW. I looked it up on Google and you just made everything twice as easy and sharper. Thanks.
