So I got some stuff published, found out that I got on both creative writing modules next year and I've been unable to write anything for the last week or so.

And new Elliott Smith album is pretty bitchin'.

bowl of oranges 05-21-2007 09:42 AM

I was going to do a creative writing course start this September. I decided against it however as really i'm not that great a writer and quite a few of the courses required an English A-level, something which i don't possess.

Congrats on getting published man, which pieces were they, i wouldn't mind a read.

Never got into Elliott Smith too much, might have to give him a try.

I dig both those, maybe the second more than the first.

I've been listening to alot of rap and pop-punk recently. Sweet.

I'm going to a Minus the Bear show tonight...Chin up Chin up and The Honorary Title are opening...whiskey is to be drank during this time.

Surf 05-21-2007 11:30 AM

I missed minus the bear when they came to town. Going to see CocoRosie in a few weeks though, which should be chill.

Hey guys, critique my new band (this one doesn't share any members with my old projects [except me]).

How do find out if someone's been heisting your work? Do you just google an excerpt from your piece as see what happens or is there something more specific for detecting plagiarism?

TojesDolan 05-23-2007 12:39 AM

Exactly my thoughts, I think I should run one of those internet hunts, just for the kicks.

Ganondorf 05-23-2007 02:36 AM

Hey I've got a question...rhyming is frowned upon so much here, but don't basicalyl all the ''great'' lyricists such as Bob Dylan use a lot of rhyme?

TojesDolan 05-23-2007 02:39 AM

Depends what you mean by "great".

I personally hate it because a) it makes your songs extremely predictable lyrically-wise, and b) usually, rhyming is only used in a very basic level, as if written for a junior high presentation.

Nonetheless, I can appreciate a good rhyming pattern if it's well made, but I try to stay away from it because it usually makes my writing weird and common place.

I'll make a write-up on rhyming, anyway. But that will be tomorrow.

Ganondorf 05-23-2007 03:41 AM

Cool :thumb:

RunAmokRampant 05-23-2007 04:42 AM

It's frowned upon probably because times have changed and that simple rhyming patterns are boring when used without some considerable thought. I think if Dylan posted his stuff on this board today, as an unknown songwriter, he would cop it a bit of flak.

TojesDolan 05-23-2007 10:04 PM

I'd ban him for the kicks.

Surf 05-24-2007 05:06 PM

Dylan wrote alot of rubbish as well tbh.

But when he was in the zone, the words surrounding the rhymes were so good it didn't really matter.

e.g. Visions of Johanna

Eliminator 05-24-2007 05:08 PM

yes and he was also a horrible harmonica player

Surf 05-24-2007 05:18 PM

True, and he wasn't a great guitar player either.

But he did write some good songs....

/Dylan fanboyism

RunAmokRampant 05-24-2007 06:56 PM

True dat.

I preferred Hendrix's version of 'All Along the Watchtower'. A fanboy would be willing to take my life if I said that directly lol.

Charlie Manson 05-24-2007 09:57 PM

what's goin on in here

Hendrix's version is better to be fair. After Dylan heard it he changed his arrangement closer to Hendrix's. The version I heard him play live about a year ago was very similar.

Practicing a bit for drum exams and stuff and trying to ignore the fact that my room smells of stale lager and old kebab.
