Gene is still a really sweet drummer, he nails Martins parts with little difficulty. Maybe he couldn't compose them, but he sure can play them. He won't butcher Damnation, don't worry. He played To Rid the Deisease fine when I saw them.
Argh....that's what I was afraid of. Unfortunately, Lopez was a member of a very special elite of heavy metal drummers who actually know the meaning of the words "dynamics" and "groove."
 Did you just make fun of Gene Hoglan? He is the man. I met him actually, after a Strapping Young Lad concert. He's mountainous. If you've seen the video for "Ghost of Perdition" you'll know what I'm talking about. |
The Grand Conjuration*
*shrug* got me. I'd ask how anyone could dislike "Baying of the Hounds" or "Harlequin Forest," but I seem to be alone here in thinking that GR is an amazing album. :(
I enjoy "baying of the hounds". I personally wouldn't call it a amazing album, but I would certainly call it a good album. |
The Grand Conjuration*
Haha I cannot believe I put that. *hangs head in shame* |
"Mist ripples round your thin white neck
And draws me a line Cold fingers mark this dying wreck This moment is mine" I always get chills when I hear that line. Post your favorite Opeth lines. |
All of The Moor, all of BWP, lots of By the pain I see in others...
ah screw it, it'll take to long. Mikeal is a great lyricist. |

I think the album as a whole is too "light". It doesn't really show the whole of what Opeth can accomplish emotionally. Harlequin Forest is the weakest song IMO. Akerfeldt even said he stole the whole opening sequence off an obscure Swedish song (which I have been totally unable to find). |

Yeah...well I just hope their next album is an improvement upon this one... |
Hm.. whats gotten into Mikeal? He's always stressed being really unique, always trying to sound different, never ripping anything off... but now its like... really different then that. I bet if the old Mikeal heard us talk about how they use similar rhythms often and that kind of stuff, he'd flip out.

Hey now. I love The Baying Of The hounds, and Reverie/harlequin Forest. It's the album as a whole. I like 3 songs off that album. That's it. I think I let off the wrong impression on my feelings about Ghost Reveries. |

A rumor maybe? Plus most musicians get ideas from other songs all the time, so you can't really blame him if he did it, really. |

Then explain the use of similar rhythms and song formulas on the past few records.

Which records? |
Then explain the use of similar rhythms and song formulas on the past few records.
Well I don't know. All bands sometimes have songs that seem similar to past ones. |

The past few have probably been my favorite, but some of the songs on D-nation have quite the similar formula, as an example. |
Well I don't know. All bands sometimes have songs that seem similar to past ones.
Yes. That's true. But, Opeth doesn't sound like anyone. There's a solo on GR that sounds like I've heard it before, other then that, It's all original to me. |
One would hope a band like Opeth would keep reinventing itself. A band gets boring once it starts to stagnate. They are a very different band than they were when they released Orchid.. not so much change from Still Life to Ghost Reveries.

Thank you! The amount of undeserved love that album gets really irks me. |

I didn't really notice that about D-nation. It doesn't matter though, d-nation is a brilliant album. |

Orchid is so legendary and ahead of it's time. The record company couldn't decide what genre it was. |

Hey don't get me wrong, I really enjoy that album. But some of the songs are pretty formuletic, and are all fairly basic riff wise. |

Now were back to the stuff Cain was talking about. "OMG I LOVE THAT SONG" for the 4000th time. :p
|
D-nation is definetly one of the best mellow albums ever made. Stop the hate.

Don't be negative. :) It's a great song. |

:( I wish I could love it like everyone else. It just seems so standard, like very little effort went into it. Most of the songs don't take any unexpected turns, none of the instrumentation is very complex (IMO), and Mikael's vocals are off in some places. I actually liked Deliverance way better. |
Theres some unexpected turns, like Closure for example. I really enjoy the D&D set, and I find them both underrated in Opeth land. :)
And no, Mikeals voice is perfect on that album. This is fact. :D  |
