Soft Machine - Why Are We Sleeping?

It begins with a blessing, it ends with a curse
Making life easy by making it worse
"My mask is my master", the trumpeter weeps
But his voice is so weak, as he speaks from his sleep

Saying: "Why, why, why... Why are we sleeping?"

People are watching, people who stare
Waiting for something that's already there
"Tomorrow I'll find it", the trumpeter screams
And remembers he's hungry, and drowns in his dreams

Saying: "Why, why, why... Why are we sleeping?"

My head is a nightclub with glasses and wine
The customers dancing or just making time
While Daevid is cursing, the customers scream
Now everyone's shouting, "Get out of my dream!"

Saying: "Why, why, why... Why are we sleeping?"

I'm using this song to describe my mental healt in Health Class, kewl.

Soft Machine = William S. Burroughs.

Cool beans.

JonM 03-08-2005 08:52 PM

I'm so glad everybody's all into Soft Machine. I forgot I had those records for SO long.

Vespertine is the sexiest album ever recorded, in other news from a nearby and slightly smaller island.
anyone happen to know of any free spyware removal software
Adaware or Spybot are good if you use them both. download.com has them both .

And JonM - It's the both the sexiest and the best album recorded.

crazyGUITARnDRUMgal 03-08-2005 08:58 PM

It's getting difficult to find my posts :/

Well_Respected_Man 03-08-2005 09:02 PM

I can relate to this song because it describes the times in my life when I don’t feel like I’m in control of everything. Now this isn’t especially a bad thing, sometimes I enjoy the clusters in my mind and the reaction that it gets from other people. So really the people that I think of when I hear this piece is the overall “Crowd” and certain friends I know. The first two lines is a good example for things I’ve seen happen to my friends. It describes instances where things that may appear to be a good idea but really it just isn’t the right decision. This song also describes confused feelings and questioning “Why are we Sleeping” is the metaphor for wondering why we live a certain why when we know the “answers already there.” Overall It’s just a crazy piece that chages dynamically repeatly like the song itself is having a “mood swing,”

Haha, I love how I can interpret this song anyway I want to and it will make some sort of sense.

Wanker 03-08-2005 09:41 PM

Oh, swell. I've got three projects to do before I get 2 weeks of nothing all to myself.

How's about you?

A Goonie 03-08-2005 09:42 PM

Little Man being Erased 03-08-2005 09:45 PM

It's amazing how good excercise makes you feel. I did pretty much nothing for 3 years and recently started swimming and I feel 100% better.

biografiend 03-08-2005 09:47 PM

yeah, exercising takes away my work frustrations :)

Wanker 03-08-2005 09:49 PM

So is Vonnegut. He's the first author that I've seen use the phrase: "Why don't you take a flying fuck at a rolling doughnut. Go take a flying fuck at the moooooooooooon!"

Good stuff.

Permanent Solution 03-08-2005 11:06 PM

Kay, to save you guys a thread, what genre is radiohead?

Little Man being Erased 03-08-2005 11:08 PM

alternative

Permanent Solution 03-08-2005 11:10 PM

Just alternative? Or Alternative rock? Also, why? The other bands I see in that genre sound nothing like them :-/

pikester 03-08-2005 11:19 PM

Which era of radiohead? Pablo Honey-The Bends is pretty much straight up alt-rock, then it gets hazy from there.

Permanent Solution 03-08-2005 11:23 PM

Well, OK comp and Kid A are what I d/led, but I really like Creep and Banana Co too, so I'm thinking of picking up Pablo at the least.

Little Man being Erased 03-08-2005 11:35 PM

Radiohead are probably one of the hardest bands to categorise. They range from alt-rock to electronic. Why are genres so important anyway?

Permanent Solution 03-08-2005 11:44 PM

I like it so I can choose a genre on my iPod based on my mood and get a scattering of good music from different bands :)

Little Man being Erased 03-08-2005 11:46 PM

Fair enough. I would just put them in alt-rock then.

Deathapalooza04 03-08-2005 11:49 PM

It's funny that you bring up Radiohead right after talking about Aphex Twin, as they cited him as a major influence for Kid A, probabably Amnesiac too, but Richard D. James has said before that he doesn't even like Radiohead. Of course RDJ has said lot's of things that are not true, so maybe he's a closet Radiohead fan.

Permanent Solution 03-08-2005 11:50 PM

Ok. Works well enough I guess.

pikester 03-08-2005 11:52 PM
I'm thinking of picking up Pablo at the least.
Get the bends instead.

Do not get Pablo Honey.

Permanent Solution 03-08-2005 11:54 PM
Get the bends instead.

Meh, it's all the same with free music...maybe I'll get both. I end up buying all the albums I like, but I rarely buy without downloading it first nowadays :)
kids, eh?
Yes.

br3ad_man 03-09-2005 03:13 AM
I just call them music
Seriously, I'd just call them Alternative, that should be a decent enough classification.

theredwonder 03-09-2005 06:20 AM
