No other good place to put this:

I've been playing guitar for about 5 years now and I'd like to start playing some other stringed instruments. I figure I'll start small and cheap and try a violin.

Anyone with experience have any notes about the ease of transitioning to the instrument?

Also, should I not even bother buying a 40-60 dollar violin or will one in that range be decent for a beginner?
Get a cheap violin if you just want to piss aroun tbh. If you're gonna play it seriously look at lessons.

The only thing I really know about violins is that they're tuned in intervals of 5ths raather then 4ths (like the guitar).

Talking of starting young playing violin, anyone heard of Jennifer Pike? Strangely enough, she went to my primary school, we were best mates :P
1. you houldnt really skimp out when you buy a violin

2. the violin is VERY hard to play, so you should start very young and should expect to be playing a looooooooooooooooooooong time before you get anywhere near what people would say is decent

odd choice of instrument to transition to
Well, you shouldn't skimp when you buy a guitar, but my first guitar was $150 and it served me fine for a few years before I decided to upgrade to a 500-600 dollar one.

My favorite instrument to listen to is by far the cello. I LOVE it. But it's not economically or spatially feasible for me to buy or own one for most of the year. Since violin and cello or in the same family, I figure that although the transition from guitar to violin will be difficult, the transition from violin to cello will be easier.

Mebbe saving up for a cheapo viola will be better in the long run, since I also prefer the sound a viola to the violin (as it's more akin to a cello)

Is it part of the reason it's harder than guitar because it's so easy for a mediocre guitarist to pass himself off as "good" to normal people by playing recognizable things? I figure that I've already got a solid left hand as far as fretting/fingering goes, and the biggest challenge will be learning the new position of notes, the using the bow, and vibrato.

Not that it'll be quick, necessarily, but I've certainly gotten over a few beginners hurdles already.

fingers mccoy 07-03-2009 06:52 PM

be prepared to spend years with very little control over timbre and dynamics if you attempt to learn violin without a teacher

if you get a teacher they'll recommend getting a better quality instrument at every turn

it's not a particularly inexpensive hobby

JoshIsNumber3 07-04-2009 12:40 PM

nah i bought some hearos when i got my amp ftw

motogrifo 07-04-2009 01:01 PM

haha, once an officer tried to fine me for rehearsing too loud, he wasn't aware of the legal volume level. The authorities here are so stupid that they have the volume limit in watts, because most of the time the infractors are stupid mexicans in their cars or PAs, so when the idiot saw that my amp was 50W I told him "so what's the limit on decibels?" - "1 radius" he said. I laughed at his face, told him to stay out of the house unless he had a warrant and then he said he was coming back with one. He came back 1 hour later, telling us to lower the volume cause the neighbours were complaining, and that he didn't have a dB meter but that we knew it was too loud. So then, when he asked nicely we turned it down.

We played a birthday for a friend recently and there was a db limiter in the hotel function room we were playing in. Apparently it was 110 db, and it cuts all the power to that room if it goes over 110 for more than a couple of seconds. We tripped it three times. Instead of moaning we just made our drummer do a solo every time it tripped then went right back into some Phil Collins.
