Hey guys, just a quick question about the next cd.
which song do you think is the 3rd song of the "the glass prison/this dying soul" story? I think it's "The Answer Lies Within "
My guess would be "These Walls" but I don't know. I know I will be buying tihs the day it omes out, however :D |
i just started listening to dream theater, and i love what i am hearing. im a drummer and ive always admired mike portnoy. hes like a heavier version of neil peart which is awesome. i also play bass and i think john myung is amazing too. anyways, i dont know much about them, but i want to buy a cd, and i dont know which one to buy. i dont want to just guess and end up getting a ****ty cd (just like someone getting into metallica and getting load instead of master of puppets). i want to buy there best cd, so any one who could tell me what that is would be awesome. i like heavier music, but not like death metal. iron maiden and tallica are basically as heavy as i go. but if there is any cds they have made that sound like those 2 bands, it would be great if you told me so i could purchase it.
|
i dunno if this is just me but i could never tell you what my favourite DT cd is my opinion is always changing because i get bored of a certian one and really get into another i hadnt heard in awhile.......but Id say Awake.....probly cause thats the album ive been listening to of late, but yea its a doozie :D
|
Sounds like you'd like Awake or Scenes From a Memory
|
I hope there's a tour to support it ...
liking train of thought better now endless sacrifice is good but this dying soul sounds like metallica... awake and metropolis part two should be coming through the post in the next couple of days |
on train of thought, on as i am, theres a point just after the chorus when he sings "as i am" and sounds very like james hetfield
|
Best DT song: Scarred.
|
Dream Theater...good stuff. Can't wait for Octavarium, hope it doesn't disappoint like Train of Thought (not a bad album, but not up to standards). Also, am I the only one here who doesn't like Awake? Just wondering.
Ya, I don't like it that much. I'm a fan of a Mind beside itself, Space-Dye Vest, and The Mirror, but that's it. The first couple of songs are alright. It is definitely not that great. I think Images, Scenes, and six degrees are the best. |
it's a nice album, but not my favorite, that goes to I&W
such a classic |
Yo, I just read in another thread that James severly damaged his vocal chords after Awake, is this true?
|
Yo, I just read in another thread that James severly damaged his vocal chords after Awake, is this true?
Just before the Awake tour, he ruptured his vocal chords after a bout of food poisoning. He's only really just recovered, I think. His voice is so much better live now than a few years ago. |
it's a nice album, but not my favorite, that goes to I&W
such a classic
out of the 2 DT albums i have, I&W > Train of thought |
true, but TOT is my second favorite :P
but nothing tops I&W |
I fail to see why people seem to "dislike" Train of Thought. I find it to be amazing, although I might be biased because it was my first DT album.
|

Doesn't sound anything like him on theiri MoP cover... ToT was also my first DT album... and Images and Words craps all over it. |
^ I stick with liking both of them. It really depends which one i'm listening to.
|
I like images and words more than train of thought which i also like a lot
|
FlyingPaul, we meet again. Our music tastes seem to run similar.

Yeah :thumb: |
Do you like Opeth? If so, we are pretty much exactly the same in music tastes.
|
Never heard of em. R they death metal?
|
Never heard of em. R they death metal?
And so much more. You'll ****ing love them. They are true geniuses. They're one of my favorite bands, and unlike Dream Theater, they sound effortlessly brilliant and progressive, whereas Dream Theater of late have sounded a bit like musical athletes with too much muscle enhancement. |
kind of. Get over to the Opeth thread and we shall talk.
|
ok see you there
|
images and words is one of the best albums ever surely?
what other album from DT sounds most like it? metropolis pt.2 and awake will be in post today!!! |
ther isn't anything like I&W,
it's just thier best work, cause it has the best sound :p the others sound great too, but they don't have that I&W sound. they change their sound with each album. enjoy listening to awake and mtr pt. 2 they're both great albums. np: DT - another day :thumb: |
yeah they will be...
|
has anyuone heard the new Petrucci solo album?
I've heard one song so far tunnelvsion, but it's great. better than a lot of LTE work IMO |
I still don't think that I&W is that good...
If I&W was produced, like, now...I might like it a little more. The overal production of it is part of why I don't like it as much. But just in general, they don't have anything that is that heavy on that album, therefore, I don't like it as much. That being said, I'd like to see their next album be closer to Awake or Train of Thought than anything else. We'll see what happens, I suppose. |
Dreamtheater Rules!!!

LaBrie's vocals on that album annoy me. I would love something more along the lines of 6 Degrees of Inner Turbulence's non-concept tracks. |

LaBrie's vocals on I&W annoy me :p I like Awake, because he seemed to show more range...going from pretty high (Scarred, 6:00) to pretty low (The Mirror, Lie) I&W is all Geddy Lee range stuff, for the most part, and I don't enjoy that from him. |
i think LaBrie is an awesome singer.....he doesn't write much of the lyrics yet he puts so much soul into it. His voice sounds good and he has a fantastic range with highs that soar
|

His singing on more recent albums has taken a more modern, contempory style, with LaBrie rapping and even doing some aggressive singing( He screams under one of the parts in In the Name of God.). I think his singing is one of the best thing about Dream Theater's earlier work, but sometimes I do feel really sorry for him in his part time job. Hehe |

haha. I feel more sorry for John Myung, he speaks for about 15 seconds in the Documentary on the Live in Budokan DVD. Do they pick on him?! |
I expect they bully him really bad. On the commentary on the live in Japan dvd he speaks for like 4 or 5 minutes. :amaze: I reckon his share of royalties go to Mike Portnoy and he has to work as a baker. Otherwise they'll flush him

I haven't listened to the commentary, I think I will just to hear him talk. I could actually see the whole royalties and baker thing going on. LOL!...A Baker...rep +...well I would if I could. |
He'd probably be amazing. "A powerhouse of a baker" a la Kevin Shirley.

I quite enjoy the modernization of his vocal stylings. I don't mind all of his higher vocals, I just don't constantly want to hear him sound like Geddy Lee. |
I noticed that Charlie Dominici sounds remarkably like Geddy lee on WdaDU. I'm a big fan of their newer stuff but I way prefer LaBrie's vocals on earlier albums, Change of Seasons, Metropolis or All of Scenes from a Memory being his high points vocally in my opinion.
Does anyone else cringe at the really bad "Hold it up now. Wait a minute!" At the beggining of Take the Time? |
