Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes
I already have Sails from the Top 100 (I downloaded them all) and I have All Hollow's EP and The Art of Drowning.
Ah, tis a good one. To this day, it's my favorite hardcore album by any band. Black Sails, AOD, and the EP are all kind of similar in a sense. Shut Your Mouth... is a pretty different than those. Still amazing. And if you like it, check out their Self-Titled EP. |
This kid told me that AFI used to have a different name than "a fire inside", but he said it was still the acronym AFI, and wouldn't tell me what it was. Am I just incredibly gullible?
|
Listening to Shut Your Mouth and it is pretty good stuff. Saying Davey is whiny is really off. His voice matches the music really well and it's welcome sounding compared to the growling and grunting of a lot of modern hardcore, and some punk.

It's a rumor that hasn't been confirmed. A lot of people think it used to stand for "Asking For It". Makes sense. I wouldn't be surprised because back in the day, "A Fire Inside" seemed like something a lot more deep than the band was back when they formed. People tend to think this was true because in their first few CD booklets, they said you could write to the band at "Asking For It..." then some other things I forget now. The only thing the band says about it, is the following: Davey, Adam, Hunter, and Jade have always been "A Fire Inside". But Jade wasn't even in the band until Black Sails in the Sunset. There is a line in track one of Shut Your Mouth And Open Your Eyes that reads "We are the ones who have a fire inside." I think maybe they thought that would be a good name after it was written and changed it around the time of the S/T EP. But that's just my guess. |
Old AFI is amazing. My favorite songs are Cereal Wars and A Single Second but they have a lot of goodies.
|
Asking For It would be a pretty good hardcore band name.
|
cruise control= awesome but newish stuff= awsomer
|
I like both old and new AFI, I own the Art Of Drowning, have downloaded Sing The Sorrow and other older tracks. I like the song I Wanna Get A Mohawk(But My Mom Won't Let Me Get One). Sing the Sorrow seems quite a bit different than their older stuff, but not in a bad way.
|
all afi whether its asking for it or a fire inside is all awesome.
|
Same thing happened with me. I was all into rap (especially Eminem) when a friend of mine showed me some bands. A few bands I remembered hating. AFI and Minor Threat.
Times have changed. Which one did you download by the way?
AFI is the only band that i hated for a while, and now are one of my favorite bands. |
I love playing God Called In Sick Today on guitar.
|
I just got Shut Your Mouth and Open your eyes and it was okay.

At they're first show (I read an article by the guy that organized it) they showed up after it was booked and said "Can we play? We only have a few songs, so we won't take long" and the guy asked their name. Davey said "We're AFI" "What's AFI stand for?" "A Buncha ****in' Idiots" "Where's the B?" "That's why we're A Buncha ****in' Idiots!" It's on this website |
When is the next Afi single going to be released?
When they finish recording and mixing. Do you think they're gonna release it before Davey's even done the lyrics? |
That'd be kinda cool. They are all capable musicians, it could just be an instrumental.

Like "Boo!"? |
More like "No Dave Party". That song is pretty cool and catchy. I would listen to it a lot more if it wasn't a hassle to get to.
For those that don't know, the song I'm talking about is a hidden track on Very Proud Of Ya. But instead of being on the end of the album, it's before track one. If you own the CD, rewind right when track one starts to play, and you will find this song. It's an instrumental, hence the title: "No Dave Party". |
is it on the vinyl?
|
I am not sure. I would think if it was, it wouldn't have been so hard to find considering the physics of a vinyl disc. But it seems it took a while for everyone to find that song. So my guess is no, but if you give it a try, I would like to know.
AFI's vinyl versions always get extra songs that CD owners don't get, so they still got one up on compact disc people. |
Is it a pretty good instrumental?
|
Meh, it's nothing spectacular. Actually it's kind of Ramones-esque with an AFI twist. Not bad. I would listen to it every time I put that album on, if it was in the middle of the album. On my car CD player, if I go too far back, it will go to track 20. And you can't Fast-Forward from there because it will go straight to track 1. So it takes a few tries to get the whole song for me. So, yeah..... pain in the arse.
And congratulations guys. We made it a whole page without a random moron calling the band emo. :chug: |
I think we've enlightened all of those idiots. If one more person calls AFI emo, I will throw used condoms at them!
|
Though they may be used, I'm running low..................
AFI IS SOOO EMO. FAGS! |
Let the condom throwing commence!!!!!!!
|
i have a stockpile of condoms. because i gather them thinking "i should always be prepared" but i never have occassion to use them.
|
so AFI aren't emo, what are they?
|
punX.
|
so AFI aren't emo, what are they?
Pop-Punk. |
NO!
They only have a few pop-punk songs. And that isn't enough to make a band pop-punk. I just call them a hardcore band, overall because they have played hardcore, melodic hardcore, and post-hardcore. Those three genres make up the majority of their catalogue, so that's why I say hardcore. As of today, they are closer to a post-hardcore band. But who knows what genre they'll go into on their next album? |
